Exclusive: The Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Chris Pratt and Charlie Day discuss playing Mario and Luigi in the new movie.

So you want to make sure you don't screw it up and being part of the collaborative team that brings this movie the way that it is, it’s such a great movie, that it fills me with pride. There wasn't anyone who was a part of this that didn't feel the responsibility of making sure we do the video game world justice with the movie version of this story. The only fear you might have is that you just don't want to be responsible for screwing any of this stuff up. The beauty is there's this lack of vanity, no one's filming you so you can be really expressive with your hands and move around your body a lot. They had more in mind than maybe I did where I was just sort of looking at each scene and saying, ‘Okay, how do I get the most out of it for Luigi and what is he feeling and what is he going through? It's really like you can be more expressive than you might be if you're cognizant of the camera on you. So I missed out a little bit on that energy that you naturally have when you're in the room with people. How did you create that energy for the characters when you were performing? You're just in a room by yourself and then they're on Zoom and you know how everything through Zoom is just not quite as good as if you're in the room together. [The Last of Us](https://www.gamesradar.com/last-of-us-part-2-review/) to the comedy [Detective Pikachu](https://www.gamesradar.com/detective-pikachu-review/). I think the medium requires that we learn a lot more about these characters than you need to know to play the games. Movie](https://www.gamesradar.com/uk/the-super-mario-bros-movie/) is hoping to do justice to arguably the most popular game in history as it reimagines the origin story of the popular plumbing duo Mario and Luigi.

Chris Pratt channels WA upbringing in 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' (The Seattle Times)

Before returning to the "Guardians" franchise in May, Lake Stevens-raised Chris Pratt takes on an iconic role in voicing Mario in "The Super Mario Bros.

After starring in “The Lego Movie” and “Guardians” and “Jurassic World” franchises, Pratt has developed an innate sense of what audiences want to see on the big screen. Which makes it all the more remarkable that Pratt has become one of the biggest and most popular stars in the world. As Pratt started to explore the character of Mario in a deeper fashion, he related to the fact that he’s a family man — so much so that he still lives with his parents — as well as extraordinarily ambitious when it comes to his work as a plumber. He had parts in local productions of “The Crucible” and “Grease,” and would perform various skits from “Saturday Night Live.” At the same time, Pratt was also doing stand-up comedy at Giggles in Seattle. Business-wise, it just made it a no-brainer.” 3.” Before then, Pratt has taken on the voice of the iconic video game character Mario in the hugely anticipated animation “The Super Mario Bros. Next month, Pratt will reprise his role as Peter Quill/Star-Lord in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.

The Super Mario Bros Movie review – wackily eccentric gamer guys ... (The Guardian)

The second film adaptation of the phenomenally successful video game is a disappointment to rival the first.

They find themselves transported into an undreamt-of Oz-type otherworld through the New York sewers; in the Mushroom Kingdom Mario must gallantly rescue Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) from the evil fire-breathing turtle Bowser (Jack Black), who has captured Luigi and intends to make Peach his bride. This movie revives the ancient and surreal quest undertaken by Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day), Brooklyn plumbers who only do the silly and borderline-offensive cod Italian voice for their cheesy TV ad.

'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Gives the People What They Want (The Atlantic)

Your best bet is to not ask too many questions and just go with the magic-mushroom flow.

But almost every other part of the movie makes clear that the studio wanted the filmmakers to avoid straying too far from the hallowed source material. On a side quest, he and Peach visit the Jungle Kingdom to try to get help from the Kong family, recruiting the upbeat but aggro Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) to their cause. The Super Mario Bros. I got goosebumps at a couple of cues in the soundtrack that pull from the legendary Koji Kondo’s original theme music. The new Super Mario Bros. I was happily surprised by the appearance of Kamek, a bespectacled turtle-wizard that is hardly among the games’ A-list ensemble.

'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Review: Gives a Prankish Video ... (Variety)

Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy and a delectably villainous Jack Black voice a digital fairy tale that connects.

Mario presides over a digital playground that lifts the spirit to a place of split-second wonder, and “The Super Mario Bros. The key thing “The Super Mario Bros. It’s not that I’m hostile to video games; it’s that the game and film mediums are so different. And “The Super Mario Bros. You don’t have to be a Mario fan to respond to it, but the film is going to remind the millions who are why they call it a joystick. [Anya Taylor-Joy](https://variety.com/t/anya-taylor-joy-2/)), who rules over the Mushroom Kingdom’s denizens, who have spherical mushroom heads and the faces of airbrushed babies; they’re led by Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), a cuddlebug with attitude. Bowser is in love with Princess Peach, even as he’s planning to attack her empire, and Black, conjuring something very different from his usual hipster-stoner vibe, makes Bowser a domineering but deeply insecure romantic, like the Phantom of Opera as a neurotic troglodyte. But then they delve into the sewer to fix a water-main break and get sucked down into an alternate universe. There’s a way that mainstream animation, not to mention my own taste in it, has been evolving. The action isn’t vacuous or ponderous — it makes speed and light seem concretely alive. [The Super Mario Bros. [Chris Pratt](https://variety.com/t/chris-pratt/) as an eager Brooklyn everyman), swirls down a New York sewer and into the Mushroom Kingdom, where he learns to leap from one now-you-see-it floating airborne block to the next, or faces off against the preening, super-strong but not really all that mighty Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) on a network of red girders in a gladiatorial arena that’s hanging 2,000 feet in the air, or zips along a superhighway of pure rainbow light in a car chase that’s aggressive enough to look like something out of “Mad Max: Candy-Land Road,” the movie doesn’t so much duplicate the logistics of a Mario game as conjure the spirit of the game.

But as cash-grabs go it’s endearing, and for viewers young enough to be coming to it all for the first time, it may serve as a window on any number of possible or impossible worlds. Movie brings things full circle, as a fond if occasionally ironic tribute from the games’ Western fans. There are a handful of differences between this interpretation of the material and earlier takes. And we don’t have to wonder who the menacing yet dopey gorilla Donkey Kong (voiced by Seth Rogen) was originally named for. If you’ve never played any of these games, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic’s animated The Super Mario Bros. The Super Mario Bros. Movie review: 'Lazy and for fans only' (BBC News)

Nintendo's iconic Italian plumber hero has already inspired one flop movie – and this sluggish new animation is no better. In fact, it might be worse, ...

As slick and corporate as The Super Mario Bros Movie is, it has a first-draft laziness that's rare in big-screen animation. The Super Mario Bros. But poor Luigi is captured by the monstrous Bowser (Jack Black), who has a name which suggests that he's a dog, and a physique which suggests that he's a dragon, but who is actually the leader of a race of turtles called Koopas. For instance, a flashback shows us that Princess Peach is a human who wandered into the Mushroom Kingdom from another planet – maybe even the same planet as Mario. The trouble starts when Mario is suddenly surrounded by floating bricks, giant gold coins, "Power Up" cubes, and burbling electronic sound effects, which only make sense in the context of a video game. Mario and Peach are supposed to be rushing to defend her realm from Bowser's invading army, but these pointless sequences remind us that no one is in any hurry to get anywhere. What's worse is that the film doesn't just have quick references to these games, it has long sequences lifted from them. As long as you don't worry about it, and embrace the psychedelic randomness, you can accept it as silly, what's-not-to-like science-fiction. Mario (Chris Pratt, who, as well as starring in Guardians of The Galaxy and Jurassic World, voiced the hero in The Lego Movie) and his nervous younger brother Luigi (Charlie Day) are established as good-hearted, bushy-moustached young guys who are trying to build their own independent plumbing business. Unfortunately, The Super Mario Bros Movie is not one of those films. By a remarkable coincidence, the brothers arrive on this surreal planet (or, possibly, in this surreal universe) just after Bowser has just got hold of a glowing star which will enable him to conquer Mushroom Kingdom. True, 1993's Super Mario Bros, with Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, was a notorious flop, but The Lego Movie was tied to a line of plastic construction sets, and that was wonderful.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Review - Actually Awesome (GameSpot)

More than just another cartoon comedy, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a surprisingly great action flick.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is chock-full of Easter eggs and other references to the decades of Mario-related content. And a big part of that is the philosophy behind the adaptation. But this isn't a movie that needs to rely on the charms of its voice talent for success. While it may seem like Peach is the real main character of the Super Mario Bros. So Luigi is the damsel in distress, and it's up to Mario and Peach to save him and all the other people/things that Bowser might like to do bad things with.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Stinks (Gizmodo Australia)

After waiting almost 40 years for Nintendo to make a Super Mario Bros. movie that looks and feels like the games it's based on, it took all of 40.

Maybe the biggest sin of The Super Mario Bros. It’s used to great effect in moments sprinkled throughout the film that are so good and inspiring, they almost make the rest of the film worth it. And once you think of The Super Mario Bros. Because the characters, with the exception of Mario, are one-note without a meaningful arc. But the disconnect between the music and the story ruins any chance of that happening. And so, with the help of Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) and others, Mario, Peach, and the gang show down with Bowser to save Luigi and the Mushroom Kingdom. The film is a collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination, the company behind Despicable Me, Sing, and The Secret Life of Pets. [has a glistening box office record](https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2022/07/the-minions-sequel-is-taking-the-box-office-by-storm-prepare-yourselves/), but not quite the critical acclaim of some of its animation contemporaries. [that looks and feels like the games](https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2020/09/the-super-mario-bros-movie-was-a-damp-fungal-love-letter-to-new-york-city/) it’s based on, it took all of 40 seconds to realise it’s going to be a mess. It pretends like it is, occasionally throwing a nostalgic wink into the set decoration, but the bulk of the movie is disarmingly straightforward, with characters who barely learn anything, and stakes that never elicit even a hint of emotion. The film begins with Bowser, the King of All Koopas, arriving with his followers to take over a [kingdom of penguins](https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2022/10/its-a-me-the-first-peek-at-the-super-mario-movie/). It’s just lots of bright colours with characters entering and exiting the movie like they’re running across a game screen.

Round Up: The Reviews Are In For The Super Mario Bros. Movie ... (Nintendo Life)

Mamma mia - The review embargo is up and opinions on The Super Mario Bros. Movie have popped up across the internet. While...

At the time of writing, it holds a This movie exists, and that's about as high as it aspires. It’s just a shame that the svelte 92-minute runtime means we don’t get much time to linger in this vibrant setting. Considering Day’s terrific voice work as Luigi, it seems a shame that the character disappears for such long stretches. The Easter eggs have Easter eggs, and it’s the kind of movie tailor-made for repeat viewing. Even the CGI is second-rate. The only exception, arguably, is when Bowser is seen thoughtfully playing power-ballads on his piano. Jack Black, who voices this horny demon, gives a stupendous performance. [Illumination] brings experience and talent; the standard of animation, crisply rendered and richly art-directed, is undeniably high. But the Bob Hoskins version is far more imaginative. Let's not beat about the bush — it's not quite the critical hit many might have been expecting. Movie have popped up across the internet.
