History has played a significant role in the blue-blood discussion. Hurley has pointed out, however, that UConn's setback came in the grind of a tough Big East, where the Huskies finished fourth with a 13-7 league record. UConn topped off an impressive March Madness run on Monday night, clamping down early and breaking it open late to bring home their fifth national title.

Unable to shoot over, or go around, this tall, long UConn team, they missed 14 straight shots from the floor. But Jordan Hawkins (16 points) answered with a three to trigger a 9-0 run and the only drama left was whether UConn would go six for six with double-digit wins. UConn is the men's champ after completing one of the most dominant March Madness runs in history. And we're still thinking about the wild women's final ...

(Play was stopped while everybody waited for LSU to shoot a free throw.) Clark spent the last quarter of the game matador-ing away from steal attempts, knowing she couldn’t risk getting disqualified. Czinano was particularly important for Iowa in the paint and represented Iowa’s only hope of going head-to-head with LSU’s powerful post players; Czinano’s backup, Addison O’Grady, played a season-high 18 minutes. You could see the confidence and exuberance returning to her after one of the coldest shooting streaks of her life had exiled her to the bench; that energy flowed through her and into her teammates. All of these people need to watch women’s college basketball, where officials yearn to take over games and force players to adhere to their own personal opinions about how players should behave on the court. Over the course of March Madness, the Iowa guard set the record for the most points in an NCAA tournament, most assists in a women’s NCAA tournament, most 3s in an NCAA tournament, and most taunts in an NCAA tournament, hitting her unfortunate opponents with John Cena’s “You can’t see me” move. She was their most consistent shooter—arguably their only consistent shooter—and peaked when she drilled seven 3s in a game against Florida. There was a brief moment of drama when San Diego State cut the deficit to five points in the second half—I almost thought the Aztecs were going to cover the seven-point spread—but this was UConn’s championship, and it had been clear that it was UConn’s championship to win for most of the past two weeks. But the Aztecs shot worse than 40 percent in three of their six tourney games, and their 32.2 percent on Monday night wasn’t even their worst shooting performance in the past month: They shot 20-for-63 (31.7 percent) in the Mountain West championship game against Utah State. They trailed in the second half of a game only once, and for about 40 seconds, in the entire tournament; their average margin of victory was 20 points. There’s nothing more draining than getting your hopes up every single time a shot goes in the air and watching it clang away. The Huskies’ shining moment was a solid month of squeezing the life out of their opposition. And as a fan of mid-major hoops, I was pulling for them throughout their improbable run to the national championship game.

There are headwinds from the current economy, a glut of basketball content that networks have tied to football deals and the generally sluggish ratings in the regular season. "Obviously, media deals are critical to conferences, and the Big East is unique because it isn't engaged with football." "UConn found itself not really having an identity for a while, and the Big East gave us that identity back," Huskies athletic director David Benedict told ESPN. It also came with a potential television pay cut, as AAC schools are expected to average nearly $7 million per school in media-only money over the course of the current television deal, which runs through 2032. We should know the answer of that value in nearly a year. The 11 schools are believed to get an annual cut of a distribution that is believed to be in the mid-to-high $40 million range. "I do think that we have the notion that this could help elevate the relative value of basketball to football and other sports," Ackerman said. Who can forget FAU, Fairleigh Dickinson over Purdue or Markquis Nowell taking over Madison Square Garden? Those are the moments that we'll remember.

The title game just won't be one of them. The 73 years young coach was movin' and groovin’ in the Hurricanes' locker room after every win. Tom Izzo conjured up his old March magic, leading Michigan State to a second-round win over Marquette, which had come into the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country. Dutcher, who toiled as an assistant for 28 years before becoming the head coach at San Diego State six years ago, got his first win in the NCAA tournament. We should have known then that this was going to be the year of upsets and upstarts. The Huskies have announced their return to the [top of the sport](https://www.cbssports.com/) with a win that caps a historic tournament run, with plenty of ways to consider this 2023 title season as one of the best in the modern era. Only [UCLA](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/UCLA/ucla-bruins/) (11), [Kentucky](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/UK/kentucky-wildcats/) (8) and [North Carolina](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/UNC/north-carolina-tar-heels/) (6) have more titles than the Huskies, and all of those titles have been won in a shorter window than any of those other programs in the top six. That 2011 UConn team is also the last team to start the season unranked in the preseason AP Top 25 poll and finish as national champions. The Big East, Hurley argues, is the toughest conference in the country and the splits between UConn's conference record (13-7) and non-conference record (17-0) at least speaks to something unique about this Huskies' squad. Dan Hurley made a comment that the Huskies' only struggles this season, a 2-6 run from late December to late January, came when they started Big East play. Each of the four players ahead of him were all the leading scorers, like Sanogo, for a national championship team. This was a program that lost its footing in the national landscape for a few years, but has steadied under Dan Hurley and now he and this 2023 team get to claim their own stake to the title-winning history of UConn basketball. The defense even got better as the tournament wore on, as no team from the Sweet 16 on shot better than [Gonzaga's](https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/teams/GONZAG/gonzaga-bulldogs/) 33.3% in the Elite Eight.

We're disappointed in the loss, but there's a brotherhood in the locker room that will never be divided by a margin of victory or not winning at all. I've just got so much admiration for how they play and their coach, he's one of the best coaches in the country." We had to be at our best to win the game. It's just great to come through on promises made to these players and the university. We weren't at our best. "It's part of the programme, we sold the vision – I sold the vision to the university that I could put together a special group of people, a coaching staff, and unbelievable players like this, so it feels great to come through.

NCAA, Power Five conferences facing new antitrust lawsuit over pay ... (USA TODAY)

Lawyers who represented plaintiffs when Supreme Court unanimously ruled against NCAA are seeking millions in damages for college athletes.

McCarrell was deprived of receiving Academic Achievement Awards that she would have earned each year that she attended Oregon and the first two years that she attended Auburn,” the suit alleges. The suit says the plaintiffs “are informed and believe that there are several thousand” athletes who would be covered. Berman and Kessler also are leading the case already pending before Wilken that seeks to build on the Alston case in a different way. Based primarily on the dollar-value limits listed in the NCAA Division I rulebook, Wilken determined their maximum cash value to be $5,980. Those awards are the items given for winning championships or participating in bowl games, which have provided athletes with gift cards and and/or an array of merchandise. That case not only asks that the NCAA be prevented from having association-wide rules that “restrict the amount of name, image, and likeness compensation available” to athletes but also seeks unspecified damages based on the share of television-rights money and the social media earnings it claims athletes would have received if the NCAA’s current limits on NIL compensation had not existed. It is connected directly to Wilken’s injunction in the Alston case. The case filed Tuesday also seeks to be a class action. The NCAA and a group of 11 conferences settled the damages portion for $208.7 million. We have yet to find members of Congress who don't worry about the athletes as the victims of the exploitation. Tuesday’s suit is the fifth antitrust case against the NCAA that has been led or co-led by the Seattle-based firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP. district court judge in March 2019 and unanimously upheld by the Supreme Court a little more than two years later.
