Why Leicester sacked Brendan Rodgers – player unrest, split ... (The Athletic)

Brendan Rodgers leaves Leicester second bottom of the Premier League - it has been quite the fall from grace for club and manager.

Rodgers has had a huge impact on his career, but doubts were starting to creep into the minds of others, even the more experienced like [Jamie Vardy](https://theathletic.com/football/player/jamie-vardy-g0VlEJLKbKMFIJfm/), who has been marginalised in recent weeks. [Youri Tielemans](https://theathletic.com/football/player/youri-tielemans-kg3LT74rQm8GKLmC/), who refused to sign a new contract, was not the only one who felt he had achieved as much as he could at Leicester. [Kasper Schmeichel](https://theathletic.com/football/player/kasper-schmeichel-CC7fIKroWIbjUPtt/) was thinking of his own future. Soumare and [Dennis Praet](https://theathletic.com/football/player/dennis-praet-U3vXtLbD8PJjcwFA/) were seemingly on their way out, too, while patience had worn thin with [Ayoze Perez](https://theathletic.com/football/player/ayoze-perez-S9xnzQLm7XmiRQGT/). They conceded stoppage-time goals against [West Ham United](https://theathletic.com/football/team/west-ham-united/), [Newcastle United](https://theathletic.com/football/team/newcastle-united/) and [Everton](https://theathletic.com/football/team/everton/). He said it was a mutual decision with Schmeichel and Ward, but Schmeichel was unhappy his run of 149 consecutive league games had come to an end. [Crystal Palace](https://theathletic.com/football/team/crystal-palace/) was the catalyst. [Wesley Fofana](https://theathletic.com/football/player/wesley-fofana-B3xBiMo59OK63V81/)’s injury, but the centre-back had by now been discarded and continues to be out in the cold. [Nottingham Forest](https://theathletic.com/football/team/nottingham-forest/) in February last year. Around the time of the Forest defeat, Rodgers began to talk about refreshing his squad and how the natural cycle of the group he inherited had come to an end. It was not just to add more quality to his squad, or more hunger and competition — “competition is a great coach for a player” — but to bring in fresh ears. While there was a lot of sadness when he was told, there was conviction that it was the right call.

History suggests changing the manager this late does little to alter your fate. Tielemans will likely leave in the summer for nothing. Did they leave the club in a better state than in which they found it? There's no succession plan and backroom staff members Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler will take charge of a monumental game against Aston Villa at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night. Some will point towards the lack of funds at Rodgers' disposal. Only two years ago, Leicester stood tall and bright as the beacon for other non-elite clubs to follow.
