Max Burgess played a neat reverse pass to Mak darting in behind, and the Slovenian international finished instinctively beyond Jamie Young. The hosts then had a series of chances in succession when Burgess hit the post before United managed to avoid two subsequent efforts finding the back of the net. Sydney nearly then equalised immediately from kick-off when Anthony Caceres arrived at the top of the box, but Young flew to his right to make the save and push the ball out for a corner. The two-goal deficit felt important for the Green and Black but it was erased in a trice when Caballo got around the back post to head home a cross from Brattan, who atoned for his own goal with an assist straight away. Pierias was a huge threat for United and nearly found a third just before the break when he crashed the crossbar with a left-footed effort, leaving the visitors with just the one-goal lead at the interval. It was a breathless contest from the outset with both sides trading forays forward in the opening exchanges, though Sydney settled into the game the quicker of the two sides.

Robert Mak's dramatic late goal has helped Sydney FC come back to secure a 3-3 draw against Western United in the A-League Men.

"We're there and we're playing a lot better than the start of the year." "We were sloppy with the goals we conceded and that was the disappointing part of the game." At 1-0 down after Wales' 14th-minute strike, a slick pass from Max Burgess found Mak in the box with the experienced Sydney FC forward's finish trickling in off the glove of goalkeeper Jamie Young to level.

At 1-0 down after Wales’ 14th-minute strike, a slick pass from Max Burgess found Mak in the box with the experienced Sydney FC forward’s finish trickling in off the glove of goalkeeper Jamie Young to level. The veteran defender cushioned the ball across goal and, much to Sydney’s frustration, it skipped off Luke Brattan’s body and into the back of the net to make it 3-1 to United. “The boys showed really good fighting spirit to come back into the game and we should have won it. “It’s a good advert for our league in that sense, the quality of our league is there for all to see.” Speaking to 10 Bold post-match, Western United goalkeeper Jamie Young – who pulled off a string of immense saves throughout the 90 minutes – tipped his hat to the Slovakian Mak for the moment of class which decided the 3-3 draw. Sydney FC survived a scare at the hands of Western United, rallying late to secure a thrilling 3-3 draw against the reigning Isuzu UTE A-League champions at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

Defensive woes haunt Sydney's ALM finals push (PerthNow)

Sydney FC are just inside the finals places but their defensive concerns shape as a huge problem if they secure a spot in the top six.

"We go there confident against a very good side that we know they are, so we need to play well to pick up points down there. "They have got good speed up top and both (our) fullbacks got caught forward which they shouldn't be and it's a problem that we need to fix." "It's not on really, we shouldn't be caught that high in the first place.
