Ayumu Iwasa secured Formula 2's first-ever pole position in Australia, making his final attempt count around a drenched Albert Park Circuit.
The session was halted five minutes in due to the heavy rain, with Oliver Bearman spinning sideways into the barrier between Turns 8 and 9. Having led at the halfway mark, Iwasa found his way back in front with a 1m 45.118s as Martins slid into the wall on the exit of Turn 5, concluding the session with over two minutes left on the clock. When running resumed as the rain eased, eight drivers traded turns in P1 with the likes of home hero Jack Doohan, Isack Hadjar, Frederick Vesti, Roman Stanek and Dennis Hauger all clocking in the fastest times.

F2's Melbourne qualifying was hit by a rainstorm that prompted it to be red flagged as drivers found it "dangerous" and "not possible" to drive.
I was trying to bring the car back to the box as it was too dangerous to complete a lap, but I completely lost it. And then it became better, and straight away the water was a lot better and we didn’t have that much aquaplaning and it was driveable.” “It was very tough, even in a straight line, to be flat. If the rain was not stopping at all, I think it was not possible to continue. It was very difficult, mentally as well to keep the car on the track, to have oversteer snaps every corner. Then also the condition was getting better and better because a lot of cars were running on the track.

For the Sprint Race tomorrow, it will be Hauger on pole due to the reverse grid. Doohan was the first driver to set a time in the second half of the session. Just after Iwasa completed his flying lap, the red flag was brought out. With just over 17 minutes to go, it was three F2 rookies at the top of the time sheets. Throughout the session Martins was requested by race control to turn on his rain light. In Qualifying, it soon became the game of who would be last to cross the line. One was brought out for Arthur Leclerc who spun on the track but was able to get going. The Alpine Academy driver completed purple sector after purple sector completing a time of 1:52.238. With 25 minutes left of Qualifying, the drivers were given the green light to start completing flying laps. The first was due to PHM Racing by Charouz’s Roy Nissany who spun on the entry to the final corner. Since free practice, the weather in Melbourne turned wet and so the drivers all went out for Qualifying on full-wet tyres. For this weekend, the drivers will be using the yellow-medium tyres and red-soft tyres; the circuit should have less stress on tyre degradation but as it’s the inaugural race weekend for F2 in Melbourne, a lot is unknown.

It was Doohan who led the way back out the pits, setting the first representative time of the session, which quickly got beaten by Frederik Vesti. Home hero Jack Doohan was moments away from setting the first competitive time of session, with the red flag interrupting his attempt just a corner away from completing the lap. The first red flag came out five minutes into the session, after Oliver Bearman found the wall between turns 8 and 9, leaving the track scattered in debris of the Prema, as well as a lost front wing from Jak Crawford’s Hitech.
Ayumu Iwasa took feature F2 race pole in wet conditions in Australia, as Gabriele Bortoleto had it in F3 both seeing crashes to end.
The second Red Flag of the session came with four and a half minutes to go. Two purple sectors for Bortoleto put him in the window to take provisional pole, but his third sector left him a tenth off and unable to improve from third. Nikita Bedrin didn’t complete his final lap, becoming the second driver to hit the wall coming onto the main straight. The Italian rounded the final corner to complete his lap, 0.2s quicker to take provisional pole. It was a heavy impact on the side but his crash left many without a final run. Luke Browning was his closest rival, 0.2s down on the provisional pole time. After the tyre preparation laps, it was Bortoleto that set the pace to beat, putting in a 1:34.064 on his first attempt. With all 30 cars out of the pitlane, it was a busy Albert Park Circuit, but only temporarily. Gabriel Bortoleto left it as late as possible to take pole for the FIA Formula 3 Feature Race. There were multiple spins for drivers but Prema’s Oliver Bearman’s tap on the wall resulted in a red flag due to conditions and debris on track. The Japanese set a 1m45.118s which was 0.6s quicker than Pourchaire to take F2 pole in Australia. After a brief period of wait, things got going with the track still wet.

FormulaNerds.com — Latest News — MP Motorsport's Dennis Hauger took victory in Melbourne ahead of Jak Crawford and Kush Maini.
Roman Stanek, one of the first drivers to switch, lost control straight out of the pit lane and went into the grass. After all the drivers who chose to put on wet tyres, the highest placed of them was Theo Pourchaire in 12th place. As a result, the Safety Car stayed out until Lap 20. A little over halfway into the race drivers began to hear on the radio that rain was coming. Then, on Lap 14, Australian driver Jack Doohan was tagged by the Van Amersfoort car of Juan Manuel Correa and was left stranded in the middle of the track. Polesitter Dennis Hauger had a good start, but faced a tough challenge from fellow Red Bull junior Jak Crawford for the remainder of the first lap.
Dennis Hauger had the win in sprint F2 race in Australia in tricky end, as Franco Colapinto got the victory in F3.
Back to racing on Lap 11 and the leader chose to go at the penultimate corner. Minì took advantage to sneak into fifth ahead of the Swede just as a fourth and final Safety Car came out. A third Safety Car was deployed after Tommy Smith ran wide at the final corner and damaged his Van Amersfoort Racing car. Plenty behind took advantage as the Hitech fell out of the top 10 in the following corners on Lap 13. A Safety Car brought a temporary reprieve at the end of Lap 1. Franco Colapinto was brave in battle against Collet down the back straight, seizing third from the Van Amersfoort Racing man into the fast Turn 9 and 10 chicane. The #16 Hitech Pulse-Eight driver even forced a nose down the inside of Oliver Goethe at Turn 1, but the slightest of contact on the run into Turn 3 gave the Trident man a puncture. The re-start was good for Hauger to win the sprint F2 race from Crawford and Maini, who held off Leclerc. There was contact between Maloney and DAMS’ Ayumu Iwasa on the opening lap but they managed to hang on. A pre-race downpour caught out the likes of Campos pair of Ralph Boschung & Kush Maini and Carlin’s Enzo Fittipaldi on the lap to the grid. The Monegasque got third from it but the Indian came back and retook the place. The reverse grid pole-sitter Dennis Hauger made a good start in his MP Motorsport start to lead Hitech GP’s Jak Crawford and Campos’ Maini.
Dennis Hauger has claimed the Formula 2 Sprint race win at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Albert Park.
The race otherwise concluded without major incident, Hauger winning from Crawford and Maini. The race finally resumed with two laps remaining, Hauger heading Crawford and Maini as he had done throughout. Stanek fired it off the road at Turn 1 out of the pits, conditions having worsened sharply since the Safety Car was deployed. Half a lap later, a lock up for Ayumu Iwasa into Turn 1 was evidence of a puncture picked up in the Turn 11 scuffle a lap earlier, forcing him into the pits. That battle pack ran from Maini in third to Frederik Vesti in ninth, with Daruvala dropping off the back as he headed a second pack that ran back to Clement Novalak in 17th. Hauger held the lead into the opening turn from Crawford as the race began.
Dennis Hauger hung on to take an intriguing F2 Sprint Race at the AGP, holding off a late safety to charge home for a third F2 win.
The restart saw a dash to the line as the track dried and Crawford looked to attack Hauger. The field settled into a grove by lap 7, as Leclerc went into P3 over Maini, and Crawford sticking fast to Hauger in the lead, as those two gained a 2s split. Enzo Fittipaldi binned his #4 Rodin in the warmup, and was consigned to a truck-tray as the racing kicked off with rain clouds looming.

Dennis Hauger became the first Formula 2 driver to stand on the top step in Melbourne, as he claimed the opening Sprint Race win of the weekend.
Bearman avenged his team mate Frederik Vesti’s early overtake to reclaim seventh on the final lap. Jak Crawford put Hauger under pressure to turn a front row start into his maiden points and podium finish in second. The Red Bull junior held on to the lead from reverse grid pole and didn’t relinquish it despite some late drizzle causing drama.
Dennis Hauger survived a late-race shower and safety car restart to take a lights-to-flag victory in the Formula 2 sprint race in Melbourne.
Ret With the shower now having passed, the wet tyre-shod runners were left stranded, Pourchaire running off the circuit as he fought to hang on. On lap 14, Doohan, caught in a midfield scrap with Trident’s Roman Stanek and the Van Amersfoort Racing duo of Correa and Richard Verschoor, was tipped into a spin at Turn 3 by the American. A spin from Virtuosi’s Jack Doohan after contact with Juan Manuel Correa brought out the safety car with eight laps remaining just as rain started to fall over the Albert Park circuit.

Making his DAMS car as wide as possible, the Monégasque got his elbows out to hold on to fourth. Nailing his restart, Hauger held firm out front to bring home his third victory in the Championship ahead of Crawford and Maini. Really happy to finally get the win this season, so just got to keep on going for tomorrow.” Martins found himself stuck in the middle of a three-car pincer movement, with Bearman attempting to dive up the Alpine junior’s outside and Maloney around the outside. Still glued nose to tail, Maloney took full advantage of the DRS train. Brave on the brakes, the Campos Racing driver got the switchback done, regaining the place in the next corner.
