A FAST start to its 150th anniversary celebration game set up St Kilda for a memorable 14.8 (92) to 11.8 (74) win against Essendon at the MCG on Saturday ...

His game on Saturday night was huge: a career-high 27 disposals, 11 marks, one goal, seven score involvements and an ability to keep contributing when it was most needed. When Mason Wood left North Melbourne it barely caused a ripple among Kangaroos fans who claimed to be tired of watching a highly-talented player deliver mediocre performances, and there were probably plenty of Saints supporters who would have agreed at the time. Could this side be the one to go that one step further and deliver a second flag to Moorabbin? While predictability can be the enemy of a dynamic attack, a reliable target can be the foundation that the best forward lines are built on. So often a big night can carry too much pressure for the team that takes the field and things can go horribly wrong on the night, but Ross Lyon's side was well and truly up for the occasion. Saturday night's clash was the pinnacle of a week celebrating St Kilda's 150th anniversary.

He controlled the wings with Brad Hill and was an integral part of St Kilda’s running power along with how they’ve been able to adapt to Ross Lyon’s system so quickly. To have half your list at that level, this is why they are doing so much damage to other clubs,” Brown said on Fox Footy. Western Bulldogs games record holder Brad Johnson added: “361 metres gained in a half, So he’s going to go 600 plus … St Kilda was scoring in almost every forward 50 entry, while Essendon failed to register a score from their first five inside 50s. A chance that Mason Wood has taken with both hands and more. His impressive start to the season was amplified when he dragged Essendon back into the contest at the start of the fourth quarter with a pair of special goals from the boundary line. The pair accompanied Bill Mohr’s posthumous elevation to Legend status, seeing him become just the 10th St Kilda figure to achieve such distinction. He’s a tall player too. There was only one man that every Saints fan wanted to see on their big night. He’s courageous in the air he can get back, he can kick goals as well and he’s a fantastic runner.” The Kangaroos discard has found a home at the Saints since 2021 and established himself in the St Kilda team in the back half of 2022. The Saints honoured the Premiership players of 1966 at a pre-game function and before the current day Saints entered the field to a guard of honour filled with former champions, captains, and the Saints faithful.

Rising Kangaroos star Harry Sheezel fell five possessions short of 30. It was the Hawks' opening victory of the season, and a first defeat for the Kangaroos. The Hawks looked in total control in the first half but a run of five consecutive North Melbourne goals trimmed the margin to just three points midway through the final quarter before Hawthorn steadied, running out winners 11.14 (80) to 9.7 (61) in Launceston. Essendon moved Kyle Langford forward at the final change and kicked the first three goals of the final term. The Power kicked two of the first three goals in the last quarter and led by four points at 10 minutes. GWS kicked three consecutive goals either side of the last change to claim the lead until the Blues were awarded a controversial free kick in the goal square when Stephen Coniglio disputed a decision. While Curnow kicked the last major of the match with fewer than three minutes remaining, it was captain Patrick Cripps who inspired the Blues to their 9.20 (74) to 9.10 (64) victory. That opened the floodgates, with the Crows kicking the last six goals of the match. But the Crows kicked the last three goals of the half and fittingly scores were level at the main break. It was a fair hit that sent Michalanney to the bench with sore ribs, but the 19-year-old sucked it up and returned to the field to be among the Crows' best. With the pressure enormous, the two teams went goal-for-goal before Adelaide blew some chances late in the third term and led by three points at the last change. They started favourites in their home match, but the Crows ran over the top of them after a pulsating duel, with seven goals to two in the last term.

St Kilda are unbeaten and proving to be the surprise packet of the season under new coach Ross Lyon.

Jye Caldwell is hardly known as a goalkicker having kicked just eight goals in his first 36 matches but in a five-minute patch at the start of the last quarter he gave the Bombers a chance with back-to-back goals from the boundary at the Ponsford Street end. Butler and Higgins finished with eight goals between them and provided the life Essendon was missing and although Jordan Ridley was brilliant in defence he could not stop the duo at ground level. The pre-game was a celebration of the club. It meant they clawed rather than roared back into the game and had spent too much energy when the match was up for grabs. Wood had the Shane Warne wing to himself, his ability to link up the lines and hold his width causing problems for Essendon, while Hunter Clark took his chance to step into Jack Steele’s shoes in the midfield. Langford had kicked five goals in round two as a forward but with Sam Weideman returning, he went back.

While predictability can be the enemy of a dynamic attack, a reliable target can be the foundation that the best forward lines are built on. If he can keep delivering at this level he will be the star recruit no-one, including Ross Lyon, was expecting to land at Moorabbin. Could this side be the one to go that one step further and deliver a second flag to Moorabbin? The Bombers need someone to stand up - and that's all they have to do - and they need them to do it soon. Across the first three rounds Wood has averaged 23.7 disposals, his next best season average was 16.6 last year. So often a big night can carry too much pressure for the team that takes the field and things can go horribly wrong on the night, but Ross Lyon's side was well and truly up for the occasion. Saturday night's clash was the pinnacle of a week celebrating St Kilda's 150th anniversary. Since crossing from Arden Street, Wood has been building on his performances and has seemingly reached his potential. Essendon still found avenues to score through, but the lack of a reliable structure showed. Sam Weideman was a contributor but didn't trouble the scorers.

The Saints celebrated their 150th anniversary, and the who’s who of the St Kilda Football Club gathered at the MCG. The Premiership players of 1966 were also honoured at a pre-game function, and injured skipper Jack Steele was paraded out on the field with the honour roll of St Kilda legends. He controlled the wings with Brad Hill and was an integral part of St Kilda’s running power. But a late blitz from St Kilda ensured they emerged victors, with a score of 14.8 (92) to 11.8 (74). Although Essendon slowly closed the margin throughout the game, St Kilda prevailed and secured top spot on the AFL ladder, extending their winning streak to three games. However, Essendon steadily found their footing and later levelled the scores in the final term, threatening to pull off a huge comeback.

Unbeaten Saints facing fresh injury concerns (PerthNow)

Jimmy Webster and Mason Wood could both miss St Kilda's clash with Gold Coast as Ross Lyon's side seeks to extend its unbeaten start to the season.

Wood was one of the Saints' best against Essendon, gathering a career-best 27 disposals and capping off his performance with a goal. But Webster was forced off the field after a head clash with teammate Dougal Howard and Wood fought on despite a shoulder issue. The Saints maintained their unbeaten start to the AFL season with a rollercoaster 18-point win over Essendon on Saturday night.

With celebrations marking the club’s 150th anniversary, confidence amongst the Saints team was high enough to deliver a hard-fought victory. The win gives St Kilda its first 3-0 start to the season since 2010. The game was a rollercoaster ride of excitement, with the opening 50m penalties against Mason Redman handing St Kilda their first two goals. Despite winning their first two games of the season on the back of 100+ scores, the Bombers’ scoring ability was called into question following their defeat by St Kilda. But the Bombers caught up in the final term, bringing the scores level before St Kilda pulled off a five-goal victory. St Kilda marked its 150th anniversary with a hard-won victory over Essendon, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.

St Kilda coach Ross Lyon gives further details on two fresh injury concerns as the Saints keep their unbeaten start to the season alive.

"He stood up against Freo (in round one) in the last quarter and he stood up again tonight." "His first three games have been outstanding, to be honest, and again he stood up in the last quarter," Lyon said. "We'll assess it, and then Mason Wood's got a bit of a shoulder, but again we'll assess it in the cold light of day.
