Donald Trump indicted on criminal charges in New York (The Sydney Morning Herald)

He becomes the first former US president to face criminal charges, even as he makes another run for the White House.

[Farrah Tomazin](/by/farrah-tomazin-hve4c)is the North America correspondent for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.Connect via The investigation derives from an alleged affair Trump had with Daniels in 2006, when he was a reality TV star and she was in her twenties. About 44 per cent of Republicans say Trump should drop out from the contest after his charges, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that concluded this month. The Manhattan probe was one of several involving the actions of the twice-impeached president, and is regarded by legal experts as the weakest case against Trump. Trump, who is seeking the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has said he would continue campaigning even if charged. Trump previously said he would continue campaigning for the Republican Party’s nomination if charged with a crime.

Donald Trump has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury after a probe into hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Mr Trump's attorneys declined the invitation, but a lawyer closely allied with the former president briefly testified in an effort to undercut the credibility of Mr Trump's former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen. Guidance will be provided when the arraignment date is selected." The fate of the hush-money investigation seemed uncertain until word got out in early March that Mr Bragg had invited Mr Trump to testify before a grand jury, a signal that prosecutors were close to bringing charges. In the weeks leading up to the indictment, Mr Trump railed about the investigation on social media and urged supporters to protest on his behalf, prompting tighter security around the Manhattan criminal courthouse. The indictment is the first criminal case against a former US president and a jolt to Mr Trump's bid to retake the White House. In a statement from a spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, Mr Trump's lawyers have been contacted and efforts are underway to coordinate his surrender.

When Trump will 'surrender' himself (NEWS.com.au)

Donald Trump has reacted with fury after a New York grand jury voted to indict the former US president.

Mr Trump has long denied doing anything wrong, and in recent social media posts he dismissed the New York investigation as a “witch hunt” motivated by political bias. The two things I wish to say at this time is that accountability matters and I stand by my testimony and the evidence I have provided.” Mr Trump pressured election officials to declare him the state’s winner, despite his defeat to Mr Biden there. “Now he wouldn’t want to be indicted, clearly, he’d prefer not to be indicted. I mean, he really believes that he’s got the capacity to set his own rules. “He announced that he would be arrested last Tuesday, he announced it, right … However, I do take solace in validating the adage that no one is above the law; not even a former president. Prosecutors allege Mr Trump and Mr Cohen conspired to cover up the true purpose of these payments, disguising them as routine legal expenses. From the time I came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower, and even before I was sworn in as your President of the United States, the Radical Left Democrats — the enemy of the hardworking men and women of this Country — have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement. Daniels says she had a sexual encounter with Mr Trump in 2006, the year after he married his third wife Melania. The Democrats have cheated countless times over the decades, including spying on my campaign, but weaponising our justice system to punish a political opponent, who just so happens to be a President of the United States and by far the leading Republican candidate for President, has never happened before. Mr Trump will be the first former president ever to face criminal charges.

A prosecutor in the state of Georgia is investigating Trump's alleged efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat in that state.
