Jennifer Aniston: Friends Is Now Offensive, Comedy Has Changed (Variety)

[announced last July](https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/friends-creator-embarrassed-diversity-donates-4-million-1235307727/) that she was so “embarrassed” by and feels such “guilt” over the lack of diversity on “Friends” that she donated $4 million to create the Marta F. All six main characters on “Friends” were white, and the show rarely featured actors of colors in prominent roles across 10 seasons and 236 episodes. “And for shows especially, when it’s going to be a comedy that’s character-driven, you write what you know. “Now it’s a little tricky because you have to be very careful, which makes it really hard for comedians, because the beauty of comedy is that we make fun of ourselves, make fun of life,” Aniston said. “[In the past] you could joke about a bigot and have a laugh — that was hysterical. Aniston recently told AFP (via [Yahoo News](https://news.yahoo.com/comedy-suffering-because-careful-now-133647894.html)) that “comedy has evolved” so much that it’s a bit tricky these days to be funny.

“There are probably a hundred things I would have done differently,” Kauffman said. “The world needs humor! “There were things that were never intentional and others … “Everybody needs funny,” the Rachel Green actress said. “I’ve talked about it in the past, and I do have very strong feelings about my participation in a system, but it comes down to I didn’t know what I didn’t know.” And it was about educating people on how ridiculous people were. In the past, she continued, “you could joke about a bigot and have a laugh — that was hysterical. well, we should have thought it through — but I don’t think there was a sensitivity like there is now.” Aniston also told the news agency it was a tragedy that the sensitivity surrounding comedy may be why there are fewer comedies in recent years than there used to be. [the beauty of comedy](https://news.yahoo.com/comedy-suffering-because-careful-now-133647894.html) is that we make fun of ourselves, make fun of life,” she told AFP. “There’s a whole generation of people, kids, who are now going back to episodes of Friends and find them offensive,” she said. The actress then switched her focus to Friends specifically, pointing out that when the show was airing in the 1990s, it was funny and people looked past some of the potentially more controversial takes the sitcom had.

In the past, said the actress, "you could joke about a bigot and have a laugh — that was hysterical...Now we're not allowed to do that."

The publication also calls out a tendency on Friends to trade on “gay panic for cheap laughs.” One example cited: Joey and Ross freak out after accidentally falling asleep together on the couch. “That was really the moment that I began to examine the ways I had participated. I want to know I will act differently from now on.” “It was after what happened to George Floyd that I began to wrestle with my having bought into systemic racism in ways I was never aware of,” said Kauffman. “And now we’re not allowed to do that.” In years past, “you could joke about a bigot and have a laugh — that was hysterical.

Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler Want to Do Drama for Next ... (Hollywood Reporter)

"We would love to be able to do something serious together," Jennifer Aniston said of Adam Sandler at the Murder Mystery 2 premiere in Los Angeles.

If someone hits you right at the end of your nose you’re going to make your eyes water a bit,” as he joked, “That was the extent of it but hey, don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.” “After I was done with the movie I got a hip surgery, so I was in agony every stunt,” he explained. I walked away going, ‘That girl was cool.'” “I just think he’s so exquisite as a dramatic actor as well and it’s not easy to swing back and forth.” “Enough said.” Of what she remembers most about that day, Aniston joked, “That he was really funny and he ate a lot of pancakes and chocolate milk and was adorable,” and Sandler echoed similar sentiments. “I wouldn’t tell anybody but I was in pain every move and I kept it to myself and by the end I was like, ‘I’ve got to get that stupid operation, man, I’m in trouble.'” Co-star Mark Strong was also quick to shoot down the story Aniston told on The Tonight Show last week about how he accidentally punched Sandler in the face and made him cry, saying, “I had to pretend to punch him about 150 times, one of them gently touched his nose and that’s become I apparently punched him as hard as I could and he ended up in tears. “By the way, Jennifer kicked me in the ribs one scene and that wasn’t in the script,” Sandler teasingly added. Both Aniston and Sandler did a number of their own stunts, as Sandler joked the most challenging stunt was just “getting up after them.” Sandler, who in recent years has received acclaim for his heavier roles in Uncut Gems and Hustle, confirmed he’s also in, saying of a dramatic project for the duo, “That would be great. “We were saying we would love to be able to do something serious together — not that this isn’t serious, but more in the dramatic side,” Aniston told The Hollywood Reporter at the Murder Mystery 2 premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

If I may speak freely, I disagree that a “whole generation” can't understand the points Friends was trying to make, but I do think there are issues like gay panic and a lack of diversity that crop up in many older sitcoms, like Friends, Seinfeld, Scrubs, and more.
