Oscar Piastri prepares for 'special' F1 Australian Grand Prix after ... (ABC News)

Oscar Piastri and teammate Lando Norris have failed to score any points from the opening two rounds of the season, with the car looking well off the pace.

"It has been clear to me for some time that our technical development has not moved at a quick enough pace to match our ambition of returning to the front of the grid." "I grew up in the suburbs of the city and it is a special feeling to be returning as an F1 driver," Piastri said. - McLaren have made changes to their team, reordering their garage after a tough start to the season

Dave Moreland, Avalon Airport’s chief of property, said it was a mad rush to unload the 930 tonnes of precious cargo as the clock ticked down. Construction on the 5.3-kilometre track started seven weeks ago, with close to 1000 semi-trailer loads moving fences, overpasses, signage, gantries and 3500 concrete track barriers from a storage site in Tottenham in Melbourne’s west. Organisers expect record capacity crowds of 130,000 on Saturday and Sunday. So the team were coming to me saying: where can we get another grandstand,” Walton said. Moreland said that within 30 minutes of the race finishing, organisers would be sending equipment back to Avalon to reload on the freighters ready to fly to the next race in Azerbaijan. The track equipment alone weighs 19,000 tonnes - the equivalent of moving the Eifel Tower - twice.

'Lot of confidence': From 'grid kid' to lone Aussie F1 star, Piastri optimistic of strong home debut.

“Sunday, nice to see the end at least, but the first lap I could’ve done a few things differently and kept myself out of trouble a bit better. I’m sure all of the other teams have got upgrades of their own as well,” he said. “We’ll try our best obviously (to score points). But it’ll be pretty special to have someone holding my flag this time.” “Saudi we showed we can get into Q3 and fight for the points on our good days so hopefully we just have a clean race, and my front wing doesn’t wipe out Lando this time, and we’ll see what we can do.” “So I was holding his flag and he broke down on the lap to the grid, so I never got to actually see him.

[As with Saudi Arabia](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.strategy-unpacked-bernie-collins-dissects-the-fastest-lap-needle-between.1sWemmBhzBirLqvjV5gvAE.html), Australia is a track position race. That leaves AlphaTauri and McLaren as the last two teams yet to score a point so far this season. Ferrari meanwhile will be hoping for much more than they got last time out in Jeddah, and they certainly have the pace for more. They seem to be in another league right now while Mercedes, Ferrari and Aston Martin are in a very close battle for second-best. Verstappen, Perez and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso are red-hot favourites to fill the podium again in Melbourne, so who outside of that is picking up votes on And there’s a high risk of a Safety Car; you tend to get a lot of them here, along with the Virtual Safety Car. Alongside this, one of the detection points in Australia is placed just after a corner, coming out of Turn 6, which can make it trickier in terms of overtaking. But this year there will be a more traditional selection of the C2, C3 and C4, as used last time out in Saudi Arabia. FAN VIEW: Two-time and reigning world champion Verstappen is even more dominant in this category, despite the qualifying blip which effectively ruined his chances of victory in Saudi Arabia. After Sergio Perez won Round 2 of the season in Saudi Arabia, he's just one point behind Max Verstappen as Red Bull head the constructors' standings – while Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin have turned heads with two podiums in two races. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez account for around 90% of the

DRIVER GROUP 1 – Charles LECLERC (Ferrari), Oscar PIASTRI (McLaren), Zhou GUANYU (Alfa Romeo), Fernando ALONSO (Aston Martin), Max VERSTAPPEN (Red Bull) Q: ...

You park up but you kind of reference yourself to the car in front of you and then you kind of guess where you are. I think there's a lot of discussions on what to explore and how to increase the entertainment and the racing, so I think it's good to always kind of question what we're doing and kind of looking at how we can improve the format and just the whole format of the weekend in general. I was just interested in your reflections on that and how you saw the difference in your setups? If you have your first session on Friday morning you need to be here on a Thursday which for a lot of the races requires flying on a Wednesday and if we can push that back to allow teams to fly on a Thursday morning… CL: Yeah, I think in the situation we are in as a team, we take this as an opportunity to work as much as possible during this break in order to get upgrades as quickly as possible and be as competitive as we want the sooner in this season. Obviously, in Bahrain I only had a few laps to get rid of it, but you know, I think that every lap I do in the car I'm getting more and more used to it again. I think the team definitely showed last year they were probably the best team in terms of development through the year, so there's a good understanding and correlation between the upgrades they're bringing on the racetrack, so it's just a matter of time until we see new parts coming on the car and obviously there is also this part of understanding between the team and myself, really understanding what I need out of a race car to extract the maximum of it. And it’s a bit of a reset for the rest of the year. I think it was not really enjoyable to drive, but it remains to be seen if the new layout will help the overtaking, or will help the show in general on the race. CL: Honestly, it is just to try and have a more solid car in all the conditions, just because we seem to be quite good in terms of Qualifying whenever the peak grip is there. I mean, of course, it was a bit different back then but yeah, this track, I think it's just because the last few years we've never really been that good at the beginning of the year. But, as I said, after a few events from now on, I think the cars will change a lot, in a few areas, and a few developments.

Why F1 Australian Grand Prix Fans Are All-in for Oscar Piastri (Autoweek)

Rookie Piastri follows Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo in a line of Australian drivers in Formula 1.

I think we’ve all seen session after session the opportunities he identifies himself or with his engineers, the next session he goes and he capitalizes, so this has been a repeated characteristic so far.” This will be the first time that I've raced at Albert Park and I’m sure it will be an experience that I remember.” “I grew up in the suburbs of the city and it is a special feeling to be returning as an F1 driver. Last year, Piastri had to watch the race from the sidelines, as Alpine’s reserve driver, a few days after celebrating his 21st birthday at a beachfront bar in Brighton. However, Piastri has never before raced at Albert Park, or even in any single-seater category in Australia, having left for England as a teenager to pursue his Formula 1 dream. Formula 1 rolls back into the sports-mad city of Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix and Round 3 of the 2023 season.
