Sleepless nights and 930 tonnes of air freight: How a Grand Prix ... (The Age)

Dave Moreland, Avalon Airportโ€™s chief of property, said it was a mad rush to unload the 930 tonnes of precious cargo as the clock ticked down. Construction on the 5.3-kilometre track started seven weeks ago, with close to 1000 semi-trailer loads moving fences, overpasses, signage, gantries and 3500 concrete track barriers from a storage site in Tottenham in Melbourneโ€™s west. Organisers expect record capacity crowds of 130,000 on Saturday and Sunday. So the team were coming to me saying: where can we get another grandstand,โ€ Walton said. Moreland said that within 30 minutes of the race finishing, organisers would be sending equipment back to Avalon to reload on the freighters ready to fly to the next race in Azerbaijan. The track equipment alone weighs 19,000 tonnes - the equivalent of moving the Eifel Tower - twice.

You cannot ever rest on your laurels in Formula 1, whether you're a team or a promoter or a partner. And the spectacle is tremendous, so I think it would be good.' Mr Little, who is also a top Victorian business leader, has revealed his hope that the GP at Albert Park will transition to an after-dark event in the next decade. It showed that Melbourne delivers on the global stage, which is important. F1 cars don't have headlights, so enormous floodlights are needed to illuminate the track.
