The show is crude. Wellmania starts with a bang – literally. One particularly affecting episode in the back half of the season where a series of unfortunate events sees Liv on a road trip with a death doula (played by Orange Is The New Black's Yael Stone). The Netflix series is based on Wellmania: Misadventures in the Search for Wellness by author and journalist Brigid Delaney and co-created with comedian and writer Benjamin Law – who you can catch for a spilt second in the background of the pilot episode. Stuck in Australia with her mum and brother, Liv sets out on a wellness journey to pull her vitals in line in time to get back to the US and her big chance to be cast as a judge on a reality TV show. A swathe of guest stars wafts in and out of episodes; one of the best is Lord Of The Rings star Miranda Otto as Camille Lavigne, a French, sex-positive author that literally strips naked on stage to prove a point.

Wellmania, staring Celeste Barber and inspired by Brigid Delaney's book, asks: what does it mean to be well?

Wellness is the physical body, yes, but also emotional, mental, sexual and spiritual health. Travis believed health is not the absence of disease, but an “ With the popularisation of social media platforms and the commodification of bodies and health, wellness can be bought and sold online. Some of these spaces endeavour to help Liv understand her mind and body, like her very concerned and unbelievably patient GP. It’s not all health and wellness. Wellness is a part of our everyday vernacular. Travis to create the world’s first wellness centre. It is quickly apparent Liv’s wellness extends beyond what she puts in her body (or up her nose). Wellmania is a show where a glass of orange juice can’t be presented without a comment about the vitamin C content. Wellness meant something distinctly different when the word first became commonplace. After failing the necessary medical exam to apply for a new card, Liv embarks on a journey to “get well”. Wellmania shows us in no uncertain terms that while many of us crave quick fixes for our health, no such thing exists.

Celeste Barber explores the extremities of wellness in 'Wellmania' (Los Angeles Times)

The comedian, known for her relatable celebrity spoofs, stars in a new Netflix show about the often dubious lengths people go in the name of wellness.

It was hilarious, but I came off it and the surfboard shot up in the air and came back down and cracked me on my nose. About 3 o’clock in the afternoon, I walked out of the house in fishnets, heels and a trenchcoat. Then I was working on my first TV show, “All Saints,” a medical drama here in Australia I was on for five years. I walked up and I was like, “Hi, I’m about to do something. But I think I was like that even before the surgery. I did the complete opposite. I remember looking at a juice cleanse once and I went, “If we did that as is advised, we could buy a car with the amount of money.” I had a lot of s— in me. I had a colonic years ago, but not for the show. When I order a coffee, [I’ll say] “Can I please have a cappuccino?” They go, “Sure, what milk?” And I go, “Just regular milk.” “We don’t have regular.” So, it’s a thing. “I’m very happy to be caught up in that movement and for people to enjoy my content and have a laugh,” she said. I think I had a green juice a week ago.

Some of it is absolute crap, some of it isn’t, and it’s different for everyone. But I don’t really want to make that show. Not much because I wasn’t willing to do a lot of that stuff. I’d like to make the money that Goop makes! I wanted to do that as well. How do you sort out the expectations of those who want to see your personality front and centre of a project versus the fact you’re also an actor? And on a TV level where it’s not real. I was close to the project from the beginning, and they built it around me. The books are a jumping off point for us, like a springboard into the world to turn it into a TV show of this character, Liv Healey. I know you’re not allowed to say this, but I feel like they’re my friends. And the US embassy won’t issue her with another until she passes a medical exam – not so easy when her blood pressure is sky high. She flies home to Sydney for her best friend’s birthday but what was meant to be a weekend getaway ends up a much longer sojourn when she loses her green card.

Wellmania review – this wellness-spoofing comedy is incredibly ... (The Guardian)

This Netflix series from Instagram star Celeste Barber is absorbing, amusing, no-nonsense TV. It's the perfect way to unwind.

Even if Wellmania doesn’t live up to its own high-concept premise, it is still incredibly watchable – the sort of absorbing, amusing, visually slick TV that is (ironically) perfect to unwind to if you are teetering on the verge of burnout à la our protagonist, yet with enough sour bite to stop it feeling too fluffy. Then there’s the slapstick: we get Liv tying herself in knots at the gym in an image reminiscent of one of Barber’s Insta parodies, and later smearing blood on the walls after a cupping treatment gone wrong (a practice popularised – inevitably – by wellness queen Gwyneth Paltrow). [Messy Millennial Woman](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/jun/09/messy-millennial-woman-tv-trope-everything-i-know-about-love-this-way-up) – the self-sabotaging, self-absorbed, thrill-seeking and secretly troubled protagonist of a tranche of recent comedy-dramas, from Fleabag to Feel Good, I Hate Suzie to I May Destroy You. She is refused another on health grounds, and must get those cholesterol and blood-pressure numbers down in order to get back to the US to take up her TV gig. Now, finally, she has a vehicle of her own in Wellmania, a Netflix series that purports to puncture the wellness industry – that slippery modern expectation that women must strive to become weller-than-well via a combination of diet, exercise and other expensive quackery, mainly peddled by photogenic social media stars. It seems like the perfect fit for Barber – or it would be if Wellmania did what it says on the tin.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'Wellmania' On Netflix, About A Woman Who ... (Decider)

Celeste Barber stars in a dramedy adapted from a nonfiction book about how hard it is to follow wellness trends.

Parting Shot: Liv storms out of the doctor’s office, saying “Watch me,” referring to starting her quest to get healthy. We know that Amy, who’s proud of her work, feels that Liv is big-timing her because she’s been successful in New York, so we get a little more depth there. The idea of the book is what is supposed to translate into the idea of the show, which is that we put our bodies through a hell of a lot in an effort to get healthy, no thanks to all of the stuff we’ve seen on social media that makes empty promises. Liv goes to the consulate but passes out as she’s trying to get her documents. Celeste Barber is funny as Liv, who not only thinks this TV judge gig is the chance of a lifetime, but has somehow become too big for her britches in the fantasy-for-2023 world of magazine food criticism. And she’s going to try everything possible to help her along. Her boss wants her on the show, but feels she needs to do a big, viral story to make her better-known to an audience outside the food industry. Liv vows to get healthier in a month, not the year the doctor suggests. The next day, she gets her bag stolen, which includes her green card; Amy pulls some strings to get her an appointment at the US Consulate to get her travel documents. A new Australian dramedy has one woman who lives like she’s in her 20s despite being at the cusp of 40, and what she decides to do when that wild life catches up with her. She then snorts a couple of lines in the bathroom. Liv is having sex after she and her date snorted a couple of lines.
