While Colts don't rule out Lamar Jackson, here's what would keep it ... (The Athletic)

Jim Irsay and Chris Ballard want to keep options open, but their recent QB history and stance on fully guaranteed contracts play big roles.

“I mean, with the quarterbacks that are out there with the draft, picking where we’re picking, man oh man, this is a really important time to see what direction we go in. “We’re not closing the door to any possibility or a high-paid player,” he continued. His resistance in recent years to select a young passer has led the Colts down the rocky path of scraping up discarded veterans from other teams. The GM refuses to be boxed in, and won’t act out of fear — fear of upsetting his fanbase, or fear of losing his job. But I think just history kind of tells you that, when you do that, you better know what you’re getting, and we weren’t quite ready to do that at that time. Moore for the rights to No. And the owner hates the idea of parting with two first-round picks, even for a talent like Jackson. Our game is great and it’s great for a number of reasons, but I don’t think guaranteed contracts make our game greater, I think it makes it worse.” Even beyond Irsay’s hardline stance against guaranteed contracts, the Colts landing Jackson at this point remains a long shot for even more reasons, starting with the fact that the Ravens still hold considerable leverage. “The Ravens (have) not been interested in meeting my value,” he wrote on Twitter Monday. “It has nothing to do with actual dollars,” Irsay said of a potential lucrative contract. “For me, for the good of the game, boy, I don’t believe fully guaranteed contracts would be good for our game at all, at all,” Irsay said.

Falcons mailbag, Part 1: Lamar Jackson, Desmond Ridder, Arthur ... (The Athletic)

The Falcons are 14-20 in the last two seasons, so what should we expect from them in 2023? Was Drake London worth the eighth pick?

(Pitts missed seven games last year with a torn MCL.) [Garrett Wilson](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/garrett-wilson-MVKA2Tjc5jrKX2Eo/) and [Chris Olave](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/chris-olave-lhVBO89xdOGSOXVb/), taken after London, had bigger statistical years, but London felt like a good fit for the way Atlanta wants to play. Blank has been consistently willing to spend a ton of money on his team, is one of the city’s largest philanthropists and has never been an embarrassment to his organization. It seems as if a lot of NFL teams/owners — including the Falcons — have decided they are not even going to get involved in any negotiation in which that subject is on the table. [Kyle Pitts](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/kyle-pitts-KCIoZkL2iCOFp4x0/) to get a true gauge on London’s worth. You could say his personal attachment to players (Michael Vick, Julio Jones, Matt Ryan, for example) has made it harder for the front office and coaching staff to negotiate with those players at times, and you could argue he’s been too patient with coaches. In the last 10 years, no wide receiver taken in the top 10 of the draft has a higher target percentage of their team’s passes than London’s 29.3 percent, according to TruMedia, so the Falcons clearly got what they expected out of him. Are the Falcons truly not interested in pursuing Lamar Jackson or is it possible they would wait until after the draft so they would not have to give up their first-round draft choice this year? [Lamar Jackson](https://theathletic.com/nfl/player/lamar-jackson-8vrQt8GE4bS4X4Xa/)’s taking his negotiations with the [Baltimore Ravens](https://theathletic.com/nfl/team/ravens/) public. Jackson is being helped in his contract negotiations by the NFLPA because he doesn’t have an agent, and the NFLPA would love to see fully guaranteed contracts become a regular occurrence. In fact, it seems like everybody in the league is out on trading for Jackson, which as many people have pointed out feels weird. If we’re trying to determine what good quarterback play looks like to Smith, the best numbers we have to go on are what Given the favorable schedule, what’s the ceiling for the Falcons this season?

Colts owner Jim Irsay: Cost of going after Lamar Jackson might be ... (The Indianapolis Star)

Irsay has long wanted to go the rookie route, both because of the success other teams have had and because the low cost helps a team build.

A big move for Jackson might not put the Colts in cap prison. A few teams have gone the veteran route and taken it all the way to the mountaintop. The question is how do you spend it, and are you going to be able to sustain greatness? “For me, at least, personally, it’s a relief, because, as I told you guys, after Philip’s year, I wanted to go young. “We’re looking for the future guy, and we want the guy that can be there for the next 10 years,” Irsay said. By the time Irsay spoke on Monday night in Arizona, Jackson’s availability had become the dominant topic of this week’s NFL owners’ meetings.

Mike McDaniel: Dolphins “absolutely” are not pursuing Lamar Jackson (NBC Sports)

At times over the past two years, speculation has gurgled regarding the possibility that quarterback Lamar Jackson would like to leave the Ravens and join ...

If the Ravens are willing to trade Jackson, the Dolphins could have gotten involved. The Dolphins were prevented from negotiating with Jackson before the 2023 draft, because they don’t have a first-round pick in the upcoming selection process. Now that we know Jackson has asked the Ravens to trade him, half of that equation is in place.

How long can the Ravens afford to wait on Lamar Jackson while ... (cleveland.com)

John Harbaugh says he loves Jackson, but love can't solve everything, and the Ravens can't wait in limbo too long for a player who might not want to play ...

“I don’t know,” Harbaugh said. “To me, this is part of the way it works. “I don’t know anything, really.” As long as that’s true, the Ravens are stuck writing a run-on sentence without many positive outcomes. There’s a lot of little moving parts to this deal that go beyond one player or one team, or anything like that,” he said. Harbaugh would like a deal done “yesterday,” but he joked Monday that he doesn’t need to know his starter until opening day. The owners want Watson’s deal to be an outlier. And I think that’s all kind of weaving its way into (this negotiation).” Jackson, like other players, is pushing for as much guaranteed money as possible after Deshaun Watson signed a fully guaranteed deal with the Browns last spring. He and new offensive coordinator Todd Monken are still building their new offense with the belief that Jackson will run it. Harbaugh loves Jackson, anyway – he said it 11 times during his 30-minute chat with reporters at the NFL’s owners meetings. Never mind that the Ravens still don’t appear close to agreeing on a long-term contract with Jackson.

Analysis: Ravens are Lamar Jackson's best, only option (Associated Press)

PHOENIX (AP) — Lamar Jackson's frustration over contract negotiations reached a boiling point when he announced Monday that he has requested a trade from ...

He said he turned down a $133 million, three-year contract that was fully guaranteed. “A fully guaranteed contact in Jackson’s instance means that all quarterbacks on expiring rookie contracts will (and should anyway) demand them in the next cycle. The A team that signs him to an offer sheet would lose two first-round picks if Baltimore declined to match the deal. He’s accomplished more than Watson and doesn’t have the baggage. “The fact that right behind Jackson await quarterbacks like Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts and Justin Herbert, who have performed at extremely high levels under their rookie deals.

Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers Trade Questions Go Unanswered (The New York Times)

Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers remain the headliners in an off-season filled with secrets, half-truths and undone deals.

Douglas said he did not expect a deal for Rodgers to be completed in Phoenix. Gutekunst said his motivation for reaching out to other teams in search of a possible deal for Rodgers was rooted in “our inability to reach him or for him to respond in any way.” The Jets executives continue to drop optimistic hints that a deal will be done, and say they are in no rush. [gone public with his desire to join the Jets](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5WuJ55yeHM&ab_channel=ThePatMcAfeeShow), has gotten restless. In an interview with reporters, Green Bay General Manager Brian Gutekunst said the team had tried and failed multiple times to reach Rodgers to have a conversation about their collective, or separate, future. Responding to a news report of Francis’s involvement, [Jackson soon tweeted](https://twitter.com/Lj_era8/status/1639026740377927681), “Stop lying, that man never tried to negotiate for me.” You’re going to go into the Hall as a Packer. What would it cost Patriots to acquire Lamar Jackson from Ravens? (NBC Sports Boston)

Do the Patriots have the financial resources and the trade capital to land Lamar Jackson? Amid the trade buzz surrounding the Ravens quarterback, ...

If New England sends current quarterback [Mac Jones](https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/mac-jones?b) back to Baltimore in a potential trade for Jackson, that would free up about $ 4.25 million in cap space, which should be enough to bring Jackson in without releasing other impact talent. This is common practice in the NFL -- especially in New England, where the Patriots repeatedly restructured [Tom Brady's](https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/tom-brady?b) contract to [keep his base salary low](https://overthecap.com/player/tom-brady/1250) while backloading his cap hit. [According to multiple reports](https://www.nfl.com/news/ravens-qb-lamar-jackson-tweets-he-turned-down-three-year-133m-fully-guaranteed-c), the belief is that Jackson seeks a deal similar to Watson's. [said he requested a trade on March 2](https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/lamar-jackson-says-he-requested-trade-baltimore-ravens?b), however, opening up a few more options: The Ravens can give Jackson his $ 32.4 million deal then immediately trade him for a return other than two first-rounders. The acquiring team then can restructure Jackson's deal by signing him to an extension, as the Cleveland Browns did with Deshaun Watson in 2022 when they inked him to a five-year, $ 230 million deal that was fully guaranteed. The Ravens placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson earlier this month, allowing any team to sign Jackson to an offer sheet.

Lamar Jackson to the Colts? What Jim Irsay's guaranteed contract ... (Sporting News AU)

Jim Irsay isn't a fan of fully guaranteed NFL contracts. Will that stop the Colts from pursuing Lamar Jackson?

"Any time a special player is available — which he is — you’ve got to do the work, alright?" So, don't rule the Colts out of the Jackson sweepstakes. All that said, Irsay's comments still won't rule the Colts out of the Jackson sweepstakes. They also protect teams from signing players to fully guaranteed contracts only to see them regress and fail to live up to the deal. "Everyone has to change with the times, that sort of thing. "I line up more with the old-school owners, the Rooneys, the Maras, the Halases," he added.

Lamar Jackson trade request: Ron Rivera explains why ... (CBSSports.com)

The 'roster building' Commanders are content with Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett.

We really do," Rivera said. I don't think it's as a wild shot as people think it is. The Commanders have started 12 different quarterbacks since the start of the 2018 season, the most by any team in the NFL. We are roster building -- I think -- for the first time." These are the things we'd have to think about. "You look at the impact of what your roster building is and the assets we'd have to use to get him," Rivera said.

Latest in the Lamar Jackson Saga - ESPN 98.1 FM - 850 AM WRUF (WRUF)

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson tweeted Monday that he requested a trade from Baltimore on March 2nd. Here, we review where the two sides stand.

The Ravens are confident they will be able to come to an agreement and that Lamar Jackson will be their starting Quarterback when Training Camp starts on July 18th. The Ravens have until July 17 to reach a deal with Jackson. After that, a new deal can not be signed until the following offseason. If a player on a non-exclusive tag agrees to a deal with a new team, the original team gets the opportunity to match it — similar to how restricted free agency works in the NBA. And who knows how long it will be until that happens. Meaning he officially signs with that team, and that team sends their next two first round picks to Baltimore.

Ron Rivera: Commanders' focus on roster, not Lamar Jackson pursuit (ESPN Australia)

Ron Rivera said Tuesday that the Commanders, due to finances and their faith in QB Sam Howell, never looked into pursuing Lamar Jackson, but haven't ruled ...

"But we can plan for that at that point and go from there," Rivera said. "When you bring in a player with a big number, it impacts you and now what do you have to give up? "We think Sam will be a good football player. "Now you want to do something different and it may impact those dynamic playmakers, that front you're trying to build," Rivera said. "We're in position where we can sign guys because of the quarterback situation. "We have to look at every avenue and every opportunity," Rivera said. It's twofold because the best player could be a different position, but the best player could be that position. "We want to make a decision on the best player for us, the best player available. Payne agreed to a four-year deal with $59 million guaranteed and worth up to $90 million.
