An iconic music and entertainment retailer has officially shut down all 50 of its stores across Australia as it tries to keep up with the digital age.

“I loved going in and seeing the top 20 albums of the week and the option of putting on the headphones to listen to an album before buying it. “Was only a matter of time. CDs & DVDs are ancient now thanks to Spotify & Netflix. I just bought CDs for Christmas presents from a store. Without this, Sanity would not have lasted as long as it has, and it’s this I am most proud of.” A woman from Melbourne added: “This is so sad.

If you grew up in Australia, you almost undoubtably would have shopped in these stores.

The company went into voluntary administration in November 2020, and later said it would shut most of its shops across the country. The company announced in a Facebook post it was to close after 166 years of serving Australian customers. Franklins supermarkets closed the last of their stores in 2015. The brand remained a major player in the shopping scene for almost a century until it was bought by Myer in 1983, with all stores formally rebranded under the Myer banner in 2004. In January, Sanity announced they would close their last 50 stores in Australia by the end of April. The last Sanity store in Australia has closed down, a landmark end to a musical era as the company pivots to online sales.
