Linus Tech Tips YouTube channel hacked to promote Elon Musk ... (Dexerto)

The Linus Tech Tips YouTube channel has been hacked, and is now under a different handle, promoting crypto scam videos featuring Elon Musk.

It appears as though the LTT-affiliated channel, TechQuickie, has also been compromised, and is posting the same video under a different name. “Regarding the YouTube channel hack, we are on top of it with Google’s team now,” Linus said. It appears as though the previously deleted videos are now in the process of being restored by YouTube itself. Though, in the chat, a link to a presumably malicious “Crypto Giveaway” is present. The latter stream has been taken down after around 20 minutes of broadcasting. The first stream went down after around 35 minutes of broadcasting.

While the attack was isolated to the YouTube Channel, luckily the LTT Store and LTT Twitter were unaffected. One livestream, named OpenAI GPT-4: The Game-Changing AI Technology, and another, LinusTechTips & Elon Musk Special Crypto Giveaway, appeared to be promoting a crypto-currency scam, so we can assume that the account was hacked by scammers. So, when his YouTube channel was hacked today, over 15 Million subscribers worldwide were worried that this could be the end.

Linus Tech Tips appears to be the latest victim of a cyber attack after his Youtube channel was compromised and taken down.

It will certainly make for an interesting topic of conversation on Linus’s “The WAN Show”. “Regarding the YouTube channel hack, we are on top of it with Google’s team now. It could also cause a knock-on effect on the behind-the-scenes algorithms used by Youtube.

Well-known technology YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips has been hijacked by a malicious actor and is using it to promote a cryptocurrency scam.

Victims searching for a software download may click on the topmost sponsored link in Google and get taken to a fake site that downloads a virus rather than the actual software to their machine. Double-clicking the file causes a malicious program to run and steal private data from the victim’s computer, including YouTube session data from their browser. A fake sponsorship deal culminates with the attacker sending a media pack or video game for the victim to download. The media pack may include a file named something like “Contract for {thing} on Youtube.com”. (Hat tip to the MyBroadband forum community for referencing these solid explanations.) He went on to found Linus Media Group in January 2013 out of a garage. Well-known apps like VLC, 7-Zip, OBS, Rufus, and Notepad++ have been targeted like this. However, .com is a lesser-known Windows executable file extension. The attacker appears to have gained access to the Linus Tech Tips channel and changed the channel handle from Linus Tech Tips is not the only YouTube channel targeted in this way. YouTube Linus Sebastian created the Linus Tech Tips channel in November 2008. At the time of publication, the channel handle had been changed again to @temporaryhandle, with the channel name changed to @LinusTechTipsTemp.

Like any crypto giveaway scams, hackers had asked users to send crypto to the hackers with the promise that a large amount of crypto would be sent back. At this time it is unknown how the Linus Tech Tips channel was hacked, but the good news is that it didn't take long for the channel to be taken back by its rightful owners. Thankfully, the Linus Tech Tips crew has quickly worked to re-establish control of the channel, but not before the channel had started two live streams to promote AI, chat GPT, Bitcoin, and their aforementioned (fake) crypto giveaway.
