Bank of England raises UK interest rates by quarter point to 4.25% (The Guardian)

Monetary policy committee votes to increase base rate after February's surprise rise in inflation.

Economists have suggested weaker levels of wage growth could reduce the risk of persistently high inflation. The extension of the government’s energy price guarantee, at £2,500 for an average household bill, would help real incomes remain broadly flat, rather than falling significantly. The The Bank’s official target for inflation is 2%. In a fortnight of heightened unease in global financial markets, the Bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC) voted by a majority of seven to two to increase the base rate for the 11th time in a row. [Bank of England](https://www.theguardian.com/business/bankofenglandgovernor) has raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point to 4.25% in response to higher than expected UK inflation and signs that Britain’s economy was holding up better than feared.

The Office for Budget Responsibility, the government’s fiscal watchdog, expects inflation to fall rapidly, reaching around 3% in the final quarter of this year, helped by falling energy prices and further easing of supply bottlenecks. It added that the UK banking system “remains resilient.” The Bank of England’s job is made even more complicated by the fact that the UK economy is expected to shrink this year. “With a flagging economy and lower energy costs still set to drive a significant fall in inflation this year, despite February’s surprise increase, the case for cutting interest rates is only likely to grow,” commented Suren Thiru, economics director at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. The Bank of England said it would “continue to monitor closely” any effects from the banking crisis on credit conditions faced by households and firms. The Bank of England targets an inflation rate of 2%. Policymakers approved a quarter-point increase, to 4.25 percent, while affirming that British banks were “resilient.”

“The persistence of inflation appears more worrying in the U.K. Those prices “tend to be volatile and could therefore prove less persistent,” according to the minutes of the bank’s meeting. To some extent, those risks materialized in the surprising upturn in Wednesday’s data, which showed food prices rising in February at their fastest pace in 45 years and a measure of services inflation increasing. Bailey said in a video posted by the bank on Thursday. The Bank of England forecast that the inflation rate would fall significantly this year, and average about 4 percent around the end of the year. But it noted that, in Britain, wholesale bank funding costs, a measure of how much it costs banks to borrow money, particularly for short periods, had risen, a sign of increased risk in the banking sector. He argued that the central bank would pause rate increases because wage growth was easing and energy prices were lower. At the moment, “it was unclear how credit conditions and economic activity might be affected by recent banking-sector stress in a number of advanced economies,” the Bank of England said. The central bank had forecast that the inflation rate would fall to 9.9 percent. And wage growth has been weaker than expected, easing policymakers’ concerns that high wages in the private sector would make it harder to return inflation to the bank’s 2 percent target. Euro qualifying: England, Harry Kane convincing in Italy win (ESPN Australia)

England got their first-ever competitive win against Italy in Italy, and it was the perfect way to put their World Cup exit behind them.

England striker Harry Kane on the meaning of the result: "It is the first time England have won in Italy for a long, long time. Playing for England is probably my greatest feeling in football and I want to do it for as long as possible. Thank you to everyone in here and everyone who has made this dream a reality." A few minutes from halftime, Italian defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo was caught with his hand touching the ball in the box, possibly interfering with Harry Kane being able to win it. I can't remember what he said but I'm sure it was a on a video as everything is videoed these days and nothing stays in house. Italy began to take control of the midfield battle and mistakes crept into England's play, most obviously a palpably avoidable red card for Luke Shaw. To be a part of that is amazing. England were much the better side in the first half and deserved to extend their lead when [Giovanni Di Lorenzo](http://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/155904/Giovanni-Di-Lorenzo) was adjudged to have handled in the box, a decision Serbian referee Srdjan Jovanovic awarded on VAR review, allowing Kane to set the new England scoring record. Kane's clever hold-up play, particularly in the first half, was a reminder his ability extends far beyond goal-scoring. One of the few remaining questions England have to answer for under Southgate is their inconsistent record against the very best sides. Nothing will completely take away the pain of missing a penalty in England's World Cup quarterfinal defeat top France three months ago. This was also Southgate's 50th win as England manager, from 82 games -- a number only surpassed by Walter Winterbottom (78) and Sir Alf Ramsey (69).

Kane clinches record as England take down big rivals; Ronaldo still scoring for fun — Qualifying wrap.

Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund scored a hat-trick for the Danes on his first start for his country. Ronaldo made it 3-0 from the penalty spot before blasting home a free-kick from the edge of the area for his 120th international goal. England were forced to see out the final 10 minutes a man down after two quickfire yellow cards for Luke Shaw, but they held out for their first win away to Italy since 1961. In their first match since bowing out in agonising fashion to France in the World Cup quarter-finals, England were dominant in the first 45 minutes. Kane netted his 54th goal for England in his 81st international appearance from the penalty spot in Naples after Declan Rice had fired the visitors into an early lead. Harry Kane became England’s all-time leading goalscorer as the Three Lions enjoyed a perfect start to Euro 2024 qualifying by winning 2-1 away to Italy on Thursday, as Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in his record 197th cap in Portugal’s 4-0 win over Liechtenstein.

Italy 1-2 England: player ratings from the Euro 2024 qualifier in Naples (The Guardian)

Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham excelled, while Harry Kane held his nerve to become England's record goalscorer.

Jack Grealish (LW) The winger was lively during the first half but missed an open goal and was sloppy in possession at times. Bukayo Saka (RW) Italy did not know what to do against the youngster’s speed and incisive dribbling. Kalvin Phillips (CM): The midfielder has not started a league game for Manchester City this season and he looked rusty at times. He was not quick enough when he stepped up in an attempt to win possession and England’s defensive shape disappeared. But he stopped playing when Harry Maguire was down and Italy attacked, leaving Shaw exposed when the left-back was sent off. But he was under pressure after being booked for time-wasting and his difficulties grew when Gnonto came on. Kyle Walker (RB): The experienced defender was untroubled by a slow Italy attack at first. Jordan Pickford (GK): England’s No 1 was underworked during the first half. Domenico Berardi (RW) The winger struggled to provide any invention. Nicolò Barella (CM) The Internazionale midfielder tried to support the attack but space was limited. Francesco Acerbi (CB) The 35-year-old’s limitations were shown up by the quality of Harry Kane’s movement. Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK) Italy’s best player during a trying first half.

It was also a record-breaking night for 38-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, who made his 197th showing for Portugal to boast the most ever international appearances in the 4-0 win over Liechtenstein. “This means everything,” Kane said. It proved to be the perfect response by England after the heartache of losing to France in the World Cup quarter-finals in December when Kane missed a crucial penalty.

Harry Kane becomes England's all-time record scorer in qualifier ... (The Guardian)

Harry Kane scored a penalty to become England's all-time record goalscorer in their 2-1 defeat of Italy, with the defender Luke Shaw also shown a red card.

From back to front – and that included the goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford – the passing was on point. The turnaround was remarkable. Italy could not get near to them on the ball, the combinations up through the thirds easy on the eye. Italy are, of course, the reigning European champions, although it feels as if their second failure in a row to qualify for the World Cup is defining them more at present. A win is a win and this was a big one, England’s most difficult assignment of the group passed already. He was central to England’s barnstorming start as they controlled the tempo and the ball, looking extremely confident on it. It was Kane to Grealish and he did well to release Jude Bellingham, who advanced and unloaded a vicious drive that Gianluigi Donnarumma tipped over. What a moment it was for the captain. When they play at this stadium – especially this season, the Scudetto so close that everyone in town has started to prepare for the party of the millennium, connecting the buildings in those narrow streets with blue and white sheets – it can feel like an out-of-body experience. The rather key difference this time was that England had scored the first two goals. It ought to have been 3-0 in first-half stoppage time only for Jack Grealish to miscue wide of a gaping goal. It was a night when a Harry Kane penalty conversion positively overflowed with narrative drama.

Harry Kane completes cycle of England hotshots with goals record (The Guardian)

Harry Kane sits at the top of a golden seam of main men after goal in Naples – and his mark of 54 goals will be difficult to beat.

The finish was horrible, stunned weirdly back across a semi-open goal and well wide of the post. Kane buried it high to the goalkeeper’s left and just kept on running to the corner as one slice of the ground at the far end erupted. Just before half-time Kane almost made a third for England, sniping through on the left, looking up and pinging the perfect low cross to meet Jack Grealish’s run on the opposite flank. He plays as a No 10 for half the game, uses the ball beautifully is, in effect, a one-man attacking plan. His goals per game record is better than any significant goalscorer of the past 50 years, better than Rooney, Charlton, Lineker, Owen, Shearer. There has always been something retro in Kane’s noble sad-lion styling, the comic book brow, the 1950s insurance clerk hairstyle, as though this England line is turning back on itself in time, completing the cycle of England hotshots. Kane was a magnet for the ball in that period, making it stick like a human baseball mitt. Kane is, for some reason, talked down by some, dismissed as a penalty king, a deflections merchant, a man who has simply got lucky 54 times in 81 games. Several times he dribbled away from his man, then was caught – he really does chug these days – then had to dribble again, a strange game of tag. Giovanni Di Lorenzo handled the ball shielding it from Kane. And yet of course they do matter, not least in international football, with its sense of duty and history and ritual. You ride it like a wave.
