F1 Saudi Arabia GP qualifying live updates: Max Verstappen in ... (The Athletic)

The second round of the 2023 Formula One season is here, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen looking to win in Saudi Arabia for the second year in a row.

Lewis Hamilton said after finishing fifth that the team had to accept it was the fourth-fastest team, trailing Red Bull, Ferrari and Aston Martin. We spent two weeks in Bahrain, and all became very familiar with the circuit and conditions so the learning curve from this Friday will be a lot steeper. “But we have now shifted all our focus to this weekend and Jeddah. When it comes to ranking Formula One drivers, you’ve got two straightforward choices: go from whoever’s got the most points to whoever has the least, or from whoever has the least to whoever has the most. What most surprised you about the opening race of the season? Jeddah is a street circuit, which means overtaking during the race is very difficult. If you can only spare us a few hours this weekend — stick with us today, as recent history would suggest qualifying in Jeddah will be more exciting than the Grand Prix itself. Using Google Earth to brainstorm possible track layouts, the company and F1’s motorsports team delivered not only one of F1’s fastest circuits, but one of the quickest built. It might not take Lewis Hamilton very long to follow Angela Cullen out of the door at Mercedes. He stopped for repairs, but his team were unable to fix the damage to the front-left of his machine, leaving the British driver a lowly 19th. Verstappen’s qualifying was dramatically over and his father Jos removed his headphones despondently at the back of the Red Bull garage. All eyes will be on the front of the race today, though, rather than the back. The McLaren driver exited in Q1 after he banged his McLaren into the wall at the 27th and final bend. The inaugural race in Jeddah two years ago, the penultimate race of that incredible season, saw two red flags, multiple high-speed crashes and three different leaders before Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton eventually won to draw level with Verstappen on 369.5 points. With fewer than seven minutes remaining, his mechanics were unable to resolve the failure in time. It’s a very long season, of course, I would have hoped to start a bit further up the road, but we cannot change that now.” We’ve seen a lot of crazy things, but also we have to stay a little bit realistic,” he said. “I think we so far had a really good weekend, and every time we went on track the car was working really well. That is no easy feat on a high-speed circuit that in its two runnings so far has produced plenty of action. Twenty-four races have passed since Hamilton took the last of his record 103 victories following a monumental scrap with Verstappen here in Jeddah during the final throes of their titanic 2021 title battle. In Bahrain, he crossed the line fifth, a whopping 51 seconds behind winner Verstappen.

Express Sport is on hand to provide live updates from qualifying at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

"But it's other areas where the cars are fundamentally different where we need to set our focus there is a lot to learn. The seven-time world champion saw his final lap time deleted for a breach of track limits and will certainly have his work cut out to challenge for a podium finish in Jeddah over the course of Sunday's 50-lap contest. Not with the Red Bull, because they are in front clearly, but from P3 to P7 it is very, very tight. The Dutchman was the heavy favourite to clock the fastest time in qualifying on Saturday but was unable to set a meaningful lap in Q2, which means that he will start from 15th position when the five red lights go out on Sunday. We always have a concern about everything but not especially about the engine. "It is tight. He will be followed off the line on Sunday by second-placed Max Verstappen was the quickest driver across all three practice sessions and will be looking to follow up on his recent victory in Bahrain by claiming pole position ahead of Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez on the streets of Jeddah. The likes of Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton will be looking to avoid dropping out at the first hurdle with a couple of solid laps in the first part of the session to see them into Q2. The lights are green and the cars are beginning to emerge from the pit lane for the start of Q1. Thanks for joining us for our live coverage of today's events at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, with Sergio Perez claiming pole position in the absence of Max Verstappen at the end of an intriguing qualifying session in Jeddah. Verstappen's absence sparked a multi-car scrap for pole in Q3, with Perez eventually coming out on top thanks to a near-flawless lap at the start of the session.

Perez on pole, Piastri ninth in dramatic F1 qualifying (Speedcafe)

Sergio Perez has taken the second pole of his F1 career following a dramatic session in Saudi Arabia that saw Oscar Piastri ninth best.

The Mexican will therefore start on pole, joined on the front row by Alonso as Leclerc falls to 12th courtesy of a 10-place grid penalty. The Aussie logged a 1:29.710s, a time on par with his Qualifying 1 lap and 0.4s down on that which propelled him into the session’s final phase. Piastri improved to seventh best as the chequered flag waved, dropping only to ninth to book his place in Qualifying 3 for the first time in his career. Zhou Guanyu was the first to set a time in the session, but it was Alonso who laid down the first proper marker. The Mercedes was on the line the Ferrari ideally needed, delaying his progress and ruining his lap. The Dutchman was pushing on before the revs suddenly increased on approach to Turn 13, suggesting a transmission issue. Sargeant’s session ended without a representative lap as he stopped on track having clouted the kerbing heavily while on his final flying lap. That netted a 1:29.706s to shoot up to 11th to progress to the next phase of qualifying. He was quickly pushed into it as others improved though the Australian was on a final flying lap. Fernando Alonso had a spin at Turn 2 after asking too much from the rear end on exit to leave the Spaniard without a time with seven minutes to run. The Brit had brushed the wall at the apex of the final turn, swiping the front left wheel on the barrier before promptly returning to the pits. Perez headed Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso at the end of the session while Max Verstappen was eliminated in Qualifying 2 with a driveshaft issue.

Sergio Perez claimed pole position for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix during an action-packed qualifying session at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit after team ...

The 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix will begin at 2000 local time on Sunday night. You never know with these cars, reliability issues can hit you at any time.” – Sergio Perez, Red Bull. Max has been really strong the whole weekend and hopefully tomorrow we can have both cars up there. “It was tricky, that Q3, especially not getting that second lap. Nailing that lap, you really feel the Formula 1 cars coming alive in this place and just maximising that lap was very important because with the issue we had in the final run, it was really important as the track was improving. Verstappen limped back to the pits in a bid to rescue the situation, but with only half a dozen minutes on the clock, there was little his mechanics can do – meaning he hopped out of the cockpit, and out of Q2, down in 15th position. Alonso placed third with another strong outing in his Aston Martin but will be the first beneficiary of Leclerc’s drop from P2 to P12, joining Perez on the front row and setting up a tantalising run down to Turn 1 on Sunday. When the green light switched back on at the end of the pit lane for the start of Q2, it was Alonso who made the first move and stormed to the top of the timesheets with a 1m 28.757s – marginally quicker than the time posted by Q1 pace-setter Verstappen. Piastri and Gasly were the other two drivers to progress to Q3, meaning the two Alfa Romeos (of Zhou and Bottas) and two Haas machines (of Hulkenberg and Magnussen) joined the frustrated Verstappen as Q2 eliminees. It was a messy second F1 qualifying session for Logan Sargeant, who lost his first lap for exceeding track limits, spun out during his second effort and finally encountered a technical problem on his final attempt – leaving him at the back of the grid without a time. Moments later, Sargeant had the biggest moment of Q1 when he spun at the high-speed Turn 22/23 and stopped perilously close to the barriers, leaving him in a rush to post a lap time after also losing his first effort due to track limits. AlphaTauri lost both of their cars in Q1, with Yuki Tsunoda and Nyck de Vries taking P16 and P18 respectively – the latter ruing a mistake at the final corner of his final lap after missing FP3 due to a power unit change.

Aussie Piastri stuns F1 with epic quali as Mad Max 15th on bonkers ... (Fox Sports)

Aussie Piastri stuns F1 with epic quali as Mad Max 15th on bonkers day: Wrap.

He left the garage, walked away to the weigh-room and out of qualifying as the team diagnosed a drive shaft problem. The Q2 segment began with Alfa Romeo and Haas leading the queue ahead of the Aston Martins. It will be tricky now to get to the front so have to concentrate on points, but anything is possible at this track.” “Hopefully, Max will be able to fight through in the race and we can enjoy a good result. “It’s an engine problem,” he said, as he made slow progress. His tyres, however, were gone for a flying lap. With Leclerc facing a 10-place grid penalty, his rivals sensed a rare chance for pole, Alonso attacking his lap, Leclerc outpacing him and then Perez going top in 1:28.265 - half a second clear of the Ferrari. This left Alonso on top ahead of Perez, who returned to try and restore some pride for Red Bull on a second run, clocking 1:26.635 to beat him by a tenth ahead of the two Ferraris. “It’s almost not accelerating.” “Good job guys,” said Perez. As a result of Leclerc’s penalty, two-time champion Fernando Alonso will start from the front row of the grid for Aston Martin alongside Perez after winding up third fastest ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell and Carlos Sainz, who was fifth in the second Ferrari. Lance Stroll was sixth in the second Aston Martin ahead of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in the second Mercedes and rookie Oscar Piastri of McLaren.

FIA post-qualifying press conference - 2023 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

1 – Sergio PÉREZ (Red Bull Racing), 2 – Charles LECLERC (Ferrari), 3 – Fernando ALONSO (Aston Martin)

I think the grid is in a really good place at the moment with all the drivers there. What we have to do is not make any mistake and execute the race to perfection. I think we were faster than him in practice and Qualifying and then in the race he was very, very strong in 2022. On my side, realistically, I think it’s going to be a bit more difficult, especially once I arrive around the top cars – because there, the race pace is very similar to everybody. We saw you and Carlos doing a little bit of work on the Mediums earlier on today. To be honest, I think the expectations for the Q1 cut-off and the Q2 cut-off were a bit faster. So it will be very interesting to see tomorrow in the race, what we are able to get through and yeah, that will be very interesting. I think Max will come eventually in the race, you know. Q2 we were P1 with 28.7, and more or less we repeat the same lap in Q3, so we still miss a little bit that jump from Q2 to Q3 and follow the track evolution. Then, I don't know how easy it is going to be to overtake on this track because the midfield seems to be all extremely close in terms of race pace. It is so easy to make damage to the cars and at the end of the day, there will always be reliability concerns. I know you are one of the favourite drivers for the crowd here.

What the teams said - Qualifying at the 2023 Saudi Arabia Grand ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

The drivers and teams report back on all the action from final practice and qualifying at the second race of the season, the Formula 1 Saudi Arabia Grand ...

Looking to tomorrow, we have a decent car in the race so I think we can do a good job. “We have made a step forward from yesterday and made up most of the gap we had from our rivals, which is testament to the good work done by our team here and in Hinwil overnight. We want to be further ahead, and the team is working together closely to extract the most out of the car.” Nico also had a bit of a brake issue, and we were a little bit on the backfoot with timings because of the weighbridge and in the end, we didn’t make it. On the whole, our weekend had been a bit challenging until now, with some pace lacking in qualifying conditions: today was an improvement, and if we can have good race pace, we can be hopeful to put up a good fight tomorrow. Hopefully we'll be a bit kinder on the tyres than we were in Bahrain; we've tried to work on the setup to achieve that and we'll find out tomorrow if we've made progress." However, the weekend is not over and we have the pace to fight for a step on the podium, so we’ll reset tonight and come back at it tomorrow in the race." We know the deficits that we have and two tenths faster or slower can move us up or down a few positions; we know we need to make bigger steps forward than this, though, in the races to come. “The team delivered a really strong qualifying performance today and we have put ourselves in a great position to fight for a good haul of points in the race tomorrow. It’s a pity for Carlos because he had to put on a second set of Softs in Q2 and at the end, in Q3 he only had one set and made a small mistake, which probably cost him the front row. "I'm happy with my lap, it was on the limit and we finished further up the order than we expected to in this session. It was annoying because the car was good up until then, I was comfortable in every session and every time I was on the track, I was quick, so for sure we could have fought for pole.
