Formula 1 racer Oscar Piastri has claimed his first win over teammate Lando Norris, surviving 49 laps on one set of tyres at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix ...
"[It's] nice to get a bit of experience and some race craft there at the end. "After the first lap, it was always going to be tough, so the last couple of laps were a bit of entertainment, which is nice. Piastri, who had a set of hard tyres put on his car during the pit stop, completed the rest of the race on that set while others were given fresher tyres later on.
Red Bull continues their early dominance of the Formula 1 season, as Sergio Perez takes victory in Saudi Arabia ahead of his charging teammate.
But Piastri was was able to show his skill in the final laps, overtaking Norris and the Williams of Logan Sergant. Piastri was forced to pit at the end of the first lap, sending him to the back of the grid. The faster tyres were enough for Norris to pass the Australian in a bid to climb up the grid and pass those on the hard tyres, which never materialised. Alonso was given a 10-second penalty moments after he was presented the trophy for third place, dropping him to fourth. Fernando Alonso was third across the line in what was another terrific drive from the Spaniard, but he was given a 10-second penalty after the trophy presentation, only for it to be later overturned. - Sergio Perez secured the fifth victory of his F1 career at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix
McLaren hits new low amid Piastri disaster as F1 legend stripped of historic feat in Saudi controversy.
DNF: Alexander Albon (Williams) 17th: Lando Norris (McLaren) 15th: Oscar Piastri (McLaren) The Dutchman then passed Alonso on the straight into lap 25 to take second. 5th: Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) When racing resumed on lap 21 with Perez powering clear again, Verstappen also showed great pace as he pressed Russell, breezing past him for third on lap 24, leaving the Briton to hold off his teammate Hamilton who was up to fifth. 3rd: George Russell (Mercedes) Despite attempting to serve his penalty during the pit stop, Alonso stayed second behind Perez. By lap 11, Hamilton was eighth, trapped between Leclerc and Verstappen. By then, he had been given a five-second penalty for his starting spot error. “In the first sector at the start it was difficult and I was sliding around. “It turned out to be tougher than expected,” he said.

While the stewards’ decision was made on the basis that the teams had previously agreed that “no part of the car could be touched while a penalty was being served as this would constitute working on the car,” Aston Martin claimed in their appeal that this was incorrect, and that simply touching the car of itself, including with a jack, did not constitute “working” on the car for the purposes of the Sporting Regulations. Teams have a a right of review of sporting decisions, and a clearly agitated Aston Martin submitted a letter to the stewards appealing the decision to give Alonso the additional 10-second penalty. With a similar incident happening to Alpine’s Estaban Ocon in Bahrain in the first race of the season, the precedent had been well established for Alonso to be handed an additional 10-second time penalty, dropping him from P3 to P4. The pace of the Aston Martin kept Alonso in a strong position for the rest of the race, coming home third behind a victorious Sergio Perez, as well as a surging Max Verstappen who charged from 15th on the grid to second. It was, however, short-lived, with Alonso handed a 5-second time penalty for lining up outside of his grid box, ending up about half a tyre’s width to the left of his P2 spot. The F1 world is in a frenzy after Fernando Alonso had his milestone 100th podium stripped from him, only to have it returned to him on appeal.
Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were jostling with each other when McLaren issued an order for them to follow.
Time to get our season back on track in Australia.” Lewis Hamilton was fifth for Mercedes with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc in sixth and seventh respectively. The 21-year-old endured a disastrous start to the race. “Made it too difficult to turn things around. He has 44 points, Perez 43 and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso 27. Coming from eighth on the grid, Piastri had to pit in the opening lap of the race after sustaining damage to his front wing.

The marshals barely had to wheel it behind the barrier. “We need to see why. It left Jeddah with the wind fully out of its sails. That’s what I’m out there for, to learn at the moment. Alonso was slapped with a five-second penalty for starting the race outside his grid box. “It doesn’t hurt much to be honest,” he said.
