Buddy's bump sours 'exceptional' Swans win over hapless Suns: 3-2-1.

But with humid conditions effectively creating a wet weather football match, the Suns’ decision to go tall forward backfired quickly. He set up the third with a precision pass from the boundary and made his presence known with several big contests. “He does brace for it (Franklin). “Often we get a little bit confused about why a team can have more tackles and more possessions – 219 pressure gauge is elite. “We know the whole competition is going faster … “He came out of the blocks kicking the first two goals and I thought, ‘he’s never going to retire!’,” he laughed. Brereton tried to argue “you are talking about portions of a second there”, but it was clear the commentators thought Franklin could have a case to answer. “The AFL is asking you to go for the football and his hands aren’t reaching out for the ball. The action is likely to leave Franklin in hot water with the AFL Match Review, in a disappointing end to what was a brilliant night for the Swans. “This is match practice for the Swans right now,” Brereton said. “They’ve got to dig in here the Suns,” commentator Dermott Brereton said. but they just need to take possession, take the heat out of the contest.”

However, the 22-year-old provided one highlight in the third term when he got on the end of a Jack Lukosius pass and went back to slot a goal from close to the boundary line. With the Suns battling to get the ball forward early on, he was starved of opportunities in the slippery conditions. When you turn up to watch Tom Papley at the footy, you're usually guaranteed excitement, and the Swans dynamo didn't disappoint again. You couldn't pick a list of good players because they were all good, from the midfield that dominated clearances to the defence that intercepted everything to the forward line that kicked five quick goals. Warner scooped it up and handballed back to Papley at top pace for the speedy midfielder to bang the goal from 50m. The Swans dominated most of the night, but the match was set up with a rollicking first quarter.

Sydney v Gold Coast - Mongrel Review - The Mongrel Punt (The Mongrel Punt)

The Sydney Swans laid waste to the Suns in their 2023 season opener, waltzing away with a 49-point win that flattered Gold Coast.

The monkey on their back is eternal mediocrity and I think they adopted him and called him Jeff. There were a few junk time goals to the Suns, which always gives a bit of a positive for their fans: at least they had some fight, right? When Gulden received the ball from a clever toe poke of Mills, he ran through the middle of the ground, slotted the goal from 55 and the party had truly begun. Their fans likely enjoyed watching their team remove the first monkey, jump on it, burn it, and then put throw it into a lake. And that was what the first quarter was for the Swans. There was none of this, and the Swans extended their lead. King kicked a nice goal from the boundary which is good to see after 12 months or so out of the game. In truth, it was a pretty normal kick, but the bar was so low at this stage, I’ll settle for anything. The first few minutes of the quarter saw the Suns put some effort in, with three holding the ball frees awarded to them in the first two minutes. The penguins began to re-emerge in the Suns’ heat map and without the same quality of structures, needed to bring some dare, risk, and some run and carry to find another spark. Noah Ainsworth, who had about three disposals (the same as Miller and Rowell at the time), defibrillated his team in the last minute of the game, snapped a goal and then set up Flanders to kick their second after the siren. I was excited just to have something on the TV that didn’t look like Australian cricking incompetence, for a change.

Sydney Swans Dominate Season Opener Against Gold Coast Suns (NNN)

However, star player Lance Franklin may be in trouble with the AFL Match Review after laying a late bump on Sun Sam Collins that made contact with his head.

Overall, the Swans’ dominant display against the Suns shows that they are ready to contend this year. It was the third quarter where the Swans really set up their win, with a dominant display of pressure that left the Suns with no answers. King, Levi Casboult, and Mabior Chol all struggled to have an impact, with Casboult ultimately being subbed out in the final term. “To have a 219 on the first night of football for the Sydney Swans – it’s an exceptional start to their year.” The match took a sour turn towards the end when Lance Franklin laid a bump on Sam Collins that made contact with the defender’s head. From the first bounce, the Swans were firing on all cylinders and quickly took a five-goal lead over the Suns.
