Rioli takes a spectacular leap over the Brisbane defender which sees him end up horizontal in mid-air. But those numbers are not being accurately reflected on the scoreboard, and Brisbane aren’t the kind of team that you want to let off the hook because they are more than capable of making you pay a price for not putting them away when you had the chance. This has been a pretty surprising start to the match. The Power dominated the opening term, but struggled to get full bang for buck on the scoreboard. That’s inexcusable from Dixon and after dominating most of the play, the Power have hardly anything to show for it on the scoreboard. And now all of Port Adelaide’s hard work has been wiped out because a beautiful set shot from Hipwood on a sharp angle has put the Lions in front early in the second term, 4.1.25 to 3.5.23. The former Eagle plays on around the man on the mark and converts a spectacular goal on the run to level things up midway through the second quarter, 4.8.32 to 5.2.32, ending a run of four Brisbane goals in a row. And just to make matters worse for the Power, a double 50m penalty from Dixon because of umpire abuse has gifted Rich a goal from 30m out in front. Port Adelaide’s advantage is now just four points early in the second quarter, 3.5.23 to 3.1.19. A couple of goals from McKenna and Gunston have put the Lions back in front by 11 points with 5:04 left in the second quarter, 7.3.45 to 4.8.32. The Lions will think they’re pretty lucky to only be down by 10 points at the first change. Port Adelaide are back in front, 3.8.26 to 4.1.25, but they’re inaccuracy is preventing them from enjoying a bigger advantage.

North Melbourne came out firing in their opening round encounter as they put the West Coast Eagles to the sword.
Then in the blink of an eye the contest turned around as the Eagles found their wings and began to take flight. In the middle of the third quarter the contest looked all but over as North held every advantage all over the ground. Their opponents on the other hand looked all out of sorts as the Eagles fumbled and fell apart under the pressure from the Roos.

Harry Sheezel stood out as the cream of the crop for the Kangaroos, with the debuting young gun putting together a performance to remember coming off half-back, collecting 34 disposals as he was one of the best afield. Sheezel wasn’t the only one to have a strong debut, with West Coast’s Reuben Ginbey standing out as one of the most consistent Eagles throughout with 15 disposals. However, West Coast were able to light a fire within themselves midway through the third term, playing like a completely different side to mount a charge.
