How St Patrick's Day came to Ireland – plus some handy phrases for ... (The Irish Times)

There's more to our patron saint than green sequins and pint-shaped hats. Here's our eight-part guide to St Patrick and our national holiday.

[St Patrick’s Festival](https://stpatricksfestival.ie/) is due in no small part to the organisers of another festival, [Seachtain na Gaeilge](https://snag.ie/), at the turn of the last century. [Irish College](https://www.irishcollege.org/) in Rome in the 1620s and is said to have supported the Irish Catholic uprising of 1641. St Patrick’s Day parades helped to create a sense of community and connection among the Irish diaspora and provided an opportunity for Irish communities to celebrate their heritage and culture. It saw St Patrick’s Day as an ideal opportunity to celebrate Irish identity and to revive interest in the Irish language and in Irish culture. But evidence emerged in recent years that a St Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17th, 1601, in a Spanish colony in Florida under the direction of an Irish priest, Ricardo Artur. St Patrick’s Day entered the calendar of the Catholic Church thanks in no small part to the work of the Waterford theologian and historian Luke Wadding. It is worthy to be chronicled that on a day when the festival was thus voluntarily kept in universal fashion, the House of Lords practically completed the passage of the Bill which is designed to make St Patrick’s Day a Bank Holiday. It was in this context that the idea of Irish cultural autonomy came to be a central pillar of Ireland’s independence movement. St Patrick is often presented in conversation with members of na Fianna, and his presence is interpreted as an allegory for the coming of Christianity. The stories and epic poems in the Fenian cycle tell the story of the Fianna, a roving band of heroes whose leader was Fionn Mac Cumhaill, the legendary Irish warrior. St Patrick’s Day is a day to celebrate all things Irish and connect with family and friends. As a child, I’d head off to school on St Patricks Day with tricolour ribbons in my hair and a badge attached firmly to my jumper. For me it will always be important to celebrate St Patricks Day. St Patrick’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate my Irish culture and heritage. It is a day to reflect on my culture and heritage, my family, and my journey. Growing up in Ireland, we always attended Mass with my Mum and Dad and family to remember St Patrick and give thanks for what he did for Ireland. St Patrick’s Day is a point for the Irish community to come together, showcase our culture and be proud of our roots. But I do remember when I was a boy back at home that we always went to Mass on St Patrick’s Day. Each year more and more nationalities enjoy celebrating St Patrick’s Day and being an ex-pat in the UK it certainly reconnects me with my heritage and reminds me how many people, if not Irish themselves, really connect and resonate with our culture. I’ve celebrated St Patrick’s Day in New York, Sydney, Ireland, London and Leeds. As an Irish dancer I was also often rolled out to do an exhibition in assembly for my class mates or attend Irish events over the weekend and on St Pat’s evening to do some Irish dances. Now my girls are more aware of the celebratory nature of the day we make sure we play more Irish music around that time and also attend the Leeds St Patricks Day parade.

Premier Mark McGowan sported a green tie for St Patrick's Day as Irish celebrations got underway across many Perth pubs on Friday.

The day is a cultural and religious celebration held on March 17 which marks the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. The Galway Hooker in Scarborough was also lit up green and well prepared to host hundreds of patrons by cooking up a feast of traditional pub feeds such as Irish pork sausages and Guinness pie, as well as stocking 63 kegs. A massive 3000 pints of the popular Irish dry stout were expected to be poured at Dirty Nelly’s Irish Pub throughout the day.

St. Patrick's Day rites: parades, bagpipes, clinking pints (ABC News)

New York City's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade kicks off a day of revelry across the United States.

“We’re going to march in a celebration of all things Irish, the Irish culture, the Irish people. The girl in a white dress with shamrocks and green stripes celebrated her birthday just two days before St. Vivian Penn’s 2-year-old granddaughter, Adeline, clapped and waved as Savannah’s parade kicked off with school children in kilts carrying American and Irish flags followed by the droning whine of a bagpipe band. Even last year’s comeback parade seemed subdued, with plenty of elbow room along the typically packed parade route, said Penn, who lives nearby in Savannah’s downtown historic district. Associated Press writers Colleen Long and Giovanna Dell’Orto in Washington contributed to this report. “This looks like it’s back to normal,” Penn said. The couple from Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, traveled to Savannah just to celebrate St. “You got the spirit, brother!” said one passerby, tapping Trout on the shoulder as he and wife, Diana, strolled the streets before the parade. Veteran parade watchers arrived before dawn to claim space in the squares for picnic tables and party tents. On Friday, the fountain on the South Lawn of the White House also flowed green as President Joe Biden, who often speaks of his Irish heritage, welcomed Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar. The city's parade, a 199-year-old tradition, is the South's largest. to greet customers already thirsty for beer and Bloody Marys.

Biden tried to match Mr. “Our goals can be the same,” Mr. But Mr. Mr. (Ronald Reagan, who was also Irish American, beat him to the office by more than 40 years.) But the current president may be the most unabashedly proud of his Irish roots, saying often that he got his “Irish values” from his mother, who told him to treat people with respect and dignity. McCarthy struck a notably warm note in his introduction, saying that he wanted to have the kind of productive relationship with Mr. “Joey, never bend, never bow, never kneel, never yield,” Mr. Not to mention the confirmation of Mr. But the real proof that the Oval Office is occupied by a fiercely proud Irish American was Mr. Aides and reporters are expecting an almost giddy president when he returns to his ancestral homeland for the first time since assuming the office he sought for decades.
