There's more to our patron saint than green sequins and pint-shaped hats. Here's our eight-part guide to St Patrick and our national holiday.

[St Patrick’s Festival](https://stpatricksfestival.ie/) is due in no small part to the organisers of another festival, [Seachtain na Gaeilge](https://snag.ie/), at the turn of the last century. St Patrick’s Day parades helped to create a sense of community and connection among the Irish diaspora and provided an opportunity for Irish communities to celebrate their heritage and culture. It saw St Patrick’s Day as an ideal opportunity to celebrate Irish identity and to revive interest in the Irish language and in Irish culture. But evidence emerged in recent years that a St Patrick’s Day parade was held on March 17th, 1601, in a Spanish colony in Florida under the direction of an Irish priest, Ricardo Artur.
