CULTURE & CRAIC: How the Irish in Britain celebrate St Patrick's Day (Irish Post)

EACH year St Patrick's Day is celebrated by the people of Ireland - and their friends - across th...

St Patrick’s Day is a day to celebrate all things Irish and connect with family and friends. As a child, I’d head off to school on St Patricks Day with tricolour ribbons in my hair and a badge attached firmly to my jumper. For me it will always be important to celebrate St Patricks Day. St Patrick’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate my Irish culture and heritage. It is a day to reflect on my culture and heritage, my family, and my journey. Growing up in Ireland, we always attended Mass with my Mum and Dad and family to remember St Patrick and give thanks for what he did for Ireland. St Patrick’s Day is a point for the Irish community to come together, showcase our culture and be proud of our roots. But I do remember when I was a boy back at home that we always went to Mass on St Patrick’s Day. Each year more and more nationalities enjoy celebrating St Patrick’s Day and being an ex-pat in the UK it certainly reconnects me with my heritage and reminds me how many people, if not Irish themselves, really connect and resonate with our culture. I’ve celebrated St Patrick’s Day in New York, Sydney, Ireland, London and Leeds. As an Irish dancer I was also often rolled out to do an exhibition in assembly for my class mates or attend Irish events over the weekend and on St Pat’s evening to do some Irish dances. Now my girls are more aware of the celebratory nature of the day we make sure we play more Irish music around that time and also attend the Leeds St Patricks Day parade.

Behind St Patrick's Day celebrations in the USA, a history of Irish ... (The Indian Express)

The festival was established by the Catholic Church in 1631 to honour St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Not much is known about St. Patrick, but stories ...

The Irish had established themselves in every aspect of American society by the 1920s and in 1960, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the great-grandson of a famine immigrant, was elected as the first Irish American President of the United States. By the 1860s, with the advent of the American Civil War, anti-Irish sentiment was replaced by a renewed hatred of African Americans. Landing on the shores of New England, the Puritan settlers established colonies in Massachusetts and would go on to dominate American politics for centuries to come. As a result, anti-Catholic sentiments within the Puritans reigned supreme, often resulting in violence against the Irish Catholic immigrants. The procession in New York City expanded in parallel with the rise of Irish nationalism as Irish aid organisations like the Hibernian Society and Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick participated in the parades. After the Pope refused to dissolve his marriage in 1534, King Henry VIII spearheaded the Protestant revolution in England by rejecting the Pope’s authority and establishing the Church of England. Many unskilled labourers feared that Irish immigrants who were willing to work for less than the existing wage would drive them out of their jobs. More than half of Irish people depended on the potato as their primary food source. However, the first large-scale celebration occurred in 1737 when The Charitable Irish Society of Boston organised the first observance of Saint Patrick’s Day in the Thirteen Colonies. The inaugural Saint Patrick’s Day celebration in New York was comparable to that in Boston. “Due to their wealth, their status, and their accommodating attitude towards the Anglo-Saxon Protestant elements of the American elite, the members of this mixed community were able to assimilate into Anglo-American society without extreme difficulty,” he adds. The first recorded St Patrick’s Day celebration in America was in St.

A 'colleen' remembers Saint Patrick's Day (GazetteNET)

Barbara Ann Veal of Sunderland has nothing but happy memories of Saint Patrick's Day. They come from two different times in her life.

It is traditional to use a bread knife to cut a cross on the top of soda bread, both to let the dough breathe and to ward off evil. She hopes to return to Puerto Rico for the holiday next year. She described the bagpipes and the dancers along the way with glee. She grabbed a parasol and strolled along the parade route. Shape the dough into a rounded loaf in the prepared pan. She was conscripted by friends to help peel potatoes for the celebration. “One of the girls asked me if I wanted to be a ‘colleen’ in the parade. For years beginning in 2008, she and her husband rented a home for several weeks each winter in Luquillo, a beach community about 30 miles from San Juan that is known as the Riviera of Puerto Rico. (Note to readers: the five minutes are for the preparation. It was he who made it for the family, after all. She has the original recipe card, written in her mother’s handwriting. Nevertheless, she associates the recipe with her tall, “very, very handsome” father.
