Tyler DiChiara wants you to give Gotham Knights a chance (digitalspy.com)

Gotham Knights star Tyler DiChiara discusses Cullen Row's onscreen debut and the importance of trans visibility in a DC comic book show.

Without that realisation, I never would have came to that conclusion. What I can control, I can control, and what I can't, I can't. This means the world to me in more ways than one, just being able to do what I love. If there's someone out there who thinks they can't do it just because of who they are, I want them to be like, "Oh wait, isn't he? The show just keeps getting better and better and better and better. Without them, I don't think I would have felt so seen and heard, so I really do appreciate the writers letting me have a little bit of a voice in that process. Everyone deserves a chance to just do what they love. The cast, the crew, everyone who worked on Gotham Knights just worked so hard, night and day, to put on the best adaptation to this multiverse for DC as possible. We would just have the day before to learn it to do it the next day, because we didn't have that much time. It was a mix of just excitement and nervousness because I know how much DC fans really honour their comics and the storyline of Batman. So learning choreography was quite easy for me, and a lot of the cast, actually. So when I saw in my emails that it was a DC project, my little nerd heart just flooded with so much excitement.

Rainbow Crew: Tyler DiChiara talks LGBTQ+ representation in ... (NNN)

The new show Gotham Knights may not be an easy sell for some fans, as the Caped Crusader is killed off early on and it focuses on lesser-known members of ...

Gotham Knights is breaking new ground with its focus on lesser-known characters and its inclusion of trans representation in Tyler DiChiara’s role. DiChiara and the writers of Gotham Knights put a lot of thought into introducing Cullen’s trans identity in a way that felt organic and true to life. However, these big swings are what make the show so compelling, and Tyler DiChiara’s role as trans teen ally Cullen Row adds some much-needed trans representation to the world of comic book adaptations.

Interview: 'Gotham Knights' Costume Designer Jennifer May Nickel ... (Nerds and Beyond)

It's not often that a job comes around that manages to combine your comics obsession with your creative skill set. But that's exactly what happened to DC ...

Jennifer May Nickel: There is one really huge nod that I hope people will notice, and I can’t give away the full aspect of it, but there is a costume of Duela’s with what I think is blatant, so hopefully everyone else will realize it too, a direct clear nod to Heath Ledger’s Joker. It was one of the joys of my career being able to create that and that I got to do it [alone]. Because I have a whole entire team, but it was one of those, “Oh, we have to do it over the weekend.” I knew exactly the process of how to do it and what to do, and we didn’t have a chance for anyone else to be having their hands on it. Is there a particular costume that you’re really excited for people to see, whether it is one of those more super villain superhero costumes or just a fun nod that you really enjoyed putting in there that you’re hoping that people will notice? And it was more technical because of the mass of them. This was my baby in a way, I got to bring that one to life and it was a joy. [laughs] The fandom around Misha has just been so lovely to engage with and they’re all just so excited for him and supportive of him that it’s been this fun little thing where we are just having fun with Tie Tuesdays with Harvey Dent and people can guess the tie knots that we have going for him as the series progresses. One morning I woke up and my phone had literally blown up and I was like, “Oh God, what costume emergency did we have while we were filming late?” And it wasn’t that, it was that Misha had posted something with one of his ties and everyone just lost their minds over it in the best possible way. What was that process like of saying, “Oh, okay, maybe this is one Easter egg too many,” or, “We really want this to be distinctive and different for the show, how can we do that”? It was very important for all of us to create a timeless look for the show. And he said, “Well, I’ve heard some mumblings about a possibility of this new show called Gotham Knights.” And I said, “Gotham what?” He said, “Yeah, I was thinking of recommending you for the project if it goes.” And I said, “Oh, please do. It hasn’t even gotten picked up yet!” I was like, “Just the idea, the possibility is…” So he put my name in the mix for it and obviously it did get picked up and I was lucky enough that they called me in to interview and I think my passion and my nerdiness for DC definitely shined through.
