The accrued national benefits of this high-stakes test lays grounds for it being around for a long time. Better-informed parents would also be able to support their children over the summer in improving any learning areas identified, while partnering proactively with their schools. Further, by the time tests are administered in mid-March, most schools, student placement and diagnostic tests have already been completed. This capability needs to be developed at school level so that when NAPLAN results are published in July, schools can exploit term-three conversations with students, parents and teachers, where these diagnostic results are discussed in tandem with semester one reports, thereby providing parents and students with a clearer learning map for 2023 that uses an [identifying strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs and setting school goals](https://nt.gov.au/learning/primary-and-secondary-students/naplan-assessment-and-reporting) for further improvement in literacy and numeracy. However, testing in March, with results released in July, in effect leaves less time for teachers to analyse the data and make use of it, or for schools to make educational improvements in that year. In 2022, more Year 9 students than usual were absent from the writing test (in total over 28,600). On the positive side, our analysis showed Year 9 students with language backgrounds other than English participated in higher proportions than average (92% compared to 87%). Anecdotally there have also been [reports](https://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/schools-can-cheat-naplan-exams/news-story/8160b68c1e79ce869538913e730cdad4) of schools asking low performing students to stay home on testing days, so they don’t “drag down” school averages. Parents who are worried about how their child may be affected by taking the tests and In 2022 over 11,000 Year 9 students didn’t sit the writing test because they had been withdrawn from it. Students who are educationally at risk need the best decisions from schools and education authorities. It is the long-term decline in NAPLAN participation in secondary schools that needs attention. Our analysis reveals low-performing students are also less likely to participate in the tests. To achieve it, we need accurate information about student progress on a national scale. Today the NAPLAN testing window starts for more than a million students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The figure below shows 79% of Year 9 students living in remote Australia sat NAPLAN last year. Students who performed poorly in NAPLAN in Year 7 were nearly five times more likely to miss the Year 9 tests than high-performing students.

"Even though the tests are done online, the time taken for the test results to be prepared remains the same and this holds the biggest disadvantage for the student and the parent." "For students already suffering multiple learning and social disadvantages, the test timing could contribute to low self-esteem when it is likely their results will fall in the lower two levels (of assessment)," she said. It's the first time the tests are being conducted in March instead of May, with the hope results will inform teaching and learning programs for the rest of the year.

Mrs Taylor said teachers spoke to all year levels about the importance of the tests and students not participating were asked to be quiet on exam days. This year the tests have been brought forward from May to March so the results can be returned to schools in Term 2 and to parents and carers in Term 3.

NAPLAN Reforms To Provide Better Benchmarks (Mirage News)

The Andrews Labor Government is making NAPLAN results easier-to-understand for parents and carers, with reforms to the annual test providing a clearer.

Victoria achieved strong results in NAPLAN last year. Reports to parents and carers will be clear as to whether their child’s skills are at the level they need to be for the child to get the best out of their schooling. The proficiency standards will give a more meaningful measure of how students are progressing at time of testing and will make it easier to identify and support students who may be falling behind.

NAPLAN Testing Kicking Off Across The Country Today (Triple M)

Families and teachers will “soon benefit from earlier results”. The NAPLAN report this year will be divided into four categories, including “Exceeding”, “Strong”, “Developing”, and “Needs additional support”. “Ministers agreed to move NAPLAN into Term 1, so the results would be available earlier in the year to inform teaching and learning programs,” he said.

Tasmanian Labor is wishing all Tasmanian students and teachers the best as NAPLAN testing kicks off across the state this week.

The NAPLAN testing window changes are an important milestone for our state’s education system, which could lead to better access to information and improved student outcomes. This is welcome news for an education system which has a lot of improving to do under the Rockliff Liberal Government. The NAPLAN testing window has been brought forward this year, meaning results will be available to education authorities earlier in the year to inform school and system teaching and learning programs.

South Australian students to start NAPLAN today (Premier of South Australia)

More than 85,900 students across South Australia will start online NAPLAN tests today, two months earlier than in previous years.

New proficiency standards with four levels of achievement for each year level will replace the previous 10-band structure and the old national minimum standard set in 2008 when tests were on paper. The tests assess skills in writing, reading, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy. By moving the testing period to an earlier date, the NAPLAN results will be available earlier, to allow teachers to assess what support students may need in the coming year and to better inform teaching and learning programs.

"Even though the tests are done online, the time taken for the test results to be prepared remains the same, and this holds the biggest disadvantage for the student and the parent."
