But that can mean that it makes up information when it doesn’t know the exact answer – an issue known as “hallucination” – or that it provides upsetting or abusive responses when given the wrong prompts. At one point in the demo, GPT-4 was asked to describe why an image of a squirrel with a camera was funny. During a demo of GPT-4 on Tuesday, Open AI president and co-founder Greg Brockman also gave users a sneak peek at the image-recognition capabilities of the newest version of the system, which is not yet publicly available and only being tested by a company called Be My Eyes. At the other end of the spectrum, payment processing company Stripe is using GPT-4 to answer support questions from corporate users and to help flag potential scammers in the company’s support forums. The new version can handle massive text inputs and can remember and act on more than 20,000 words at once, letting it take an entire novella as a prompt. “We had been using it for personalizing lessons and running Duolingo English tests.

GPT-4 is bigger and better than ChatGPT—but OpenAI won't say why (MIT Technology Review)

We got a first look at the much-anticipated big new language model from OpenAI. But this time how it works is even more under wraps.

The company claims that its safety testing has been sufficient for GPT-4 to be used in third-party apps. Early versions of GPT-4 have been shared with some of OpenAI’s partners, including Microsoft, which confirmed today that it used a version of GPT-4 to build Bing Chat. “OpenAI is now a fully closed company with scientific communication akin to press releases for products,” says Wolf. Give it a photo of the contents of your fridge and ask it what you could make, and GPT-4 will try to come up with recipes that use the pictured ingredients. This involves asking human raters to score different responses from the model and using those scores to improve future output. “It’s exciting how evaluation is now starting to be conducted on the very same benchmarks that humans use for themselves,” says Wolf. OpenAI says it spent six months making GPT-4 safer and more accurate. “GPT-4 is now the standard by which all foundation models will be evaluated.” In my demo, I was shown GPT-4 summarizing the announcement blurb from OpenAI’s website using words that begin with g: “GPT-4, groundbreaking generational growth, gains greater grades. OpenAI’s new model appears to be better at some basic reasoning than ChatGPT, solving simple puzzles such as summarizing blocks of text in words that start with the same letter.

Overall, the development of GPT-4 represents a major step forward in the field of artificial intelligence and natural language processing. OpenAI has not yet announced a release date for GPT-4, but it is expected to be a significant milestone in the development of artificial intelligence language models. Additionally, the model is expected to be capable of more sophisticated reasoning and inference, making it better equipped to handle complex tasks that require a deeper understanding of language. While it remains to be seen exactly how AI will change the nature of work, it is clear that it will have a significant impact on society in the years to come. It is expected to be the most powerful and sophisticated language model yet. He has called for greater regulation and oversight of AI development, arguing that it could pose a threat to human civilisation.

GPT4: How OpenAI and Google are up-ending white collar life (The Australian Financial Review)

Open AI and Google are now locked in a race to automate the most time-consuming, boring parts of white-collar life.

Professional services workers who spend hours slaving away to make Powerpoint presentations for meetings would ask the platform to generate slide decks based on pools of information. In demos of GPT-4 (the fourth version of Open AI’s so-called “Generative Pre-trained Transformer”), the AI tool was presented with an image of a boxing glove hanging over a see-saw with a rubber ball sitting at the other end. The company’s GPT-4 tool has been given to Open AI’s premium subscribers who pay $22 per month. Connect with Mark on [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) The company said GPT-4 had much better accuracy, could ace a series of standardised academic tests and could translate text from meaning in images. Social media is already full of examples of people using OpenAI’s tools having their “mind blown”, quickly generating clever Excel cell formulas or business case studies for university work. GPT-4 points to a future where many of the most boring and dreary parts of white-collar life are automated. But if images and more interpretation are built into Open AI’s suite, like the company has begun to do with GPT-4, one could conceivably imagine workers able to cut out the most time-intensive parts of work. GPT-4 points to a future where many of the most boring, dreary parts of white-collar life are automated. This is what makes GPT-4 a “multimodal model”, integrating Open AI’s image technology called DALL-E and relying on a “neural network” to analyse and process huge troves of image and text data. But like previous incarnations of the tool that have taken the tech world by storm, the AI-generated piece by Open AI’s GPT-4 had at least one glaring error: the bot had made up a federal government response to the crisis that didn’t happen. On Wednesday morning, one of mine had been playing with the newest tool, asking the AI bot to write a commentary piece about the

Do also realize that there are a lot of other movies available, well, other generative AI apps available, so you might want to make sure that your filmgoing (aka generative AI) experience is varied and fulfilling. They insist that though many of the AI makers seem to be sharing what they are doing, this is somewhat of a sneaky form of plausible deniability. To close off this portion of the discussion for now, generative AI by all AI makers is confronting these issues. You can also anticipate that if AI firms don’t try to deal with these problems, the odds are that lawmakers and regulators are going to be drawn into these matters and a tsunami of new AI laws will pepper all the AI makers and those that field AI. Also, the claim is made that GPT-4 outdoes GPT-3.5 in terms of averting AI hallucinations, even though it makes clear that they still are going to occur. Those of you that are interested in AI Ethics should consider doing a close reading of the TR and the SC. Fortunately, they have chosen the sensible approach of trying to get out there ahead of the backlashes and browbeating that usually goes with generative AI releases. The reason that this is questioned is that perhaps we are going to have generative AI that is tightly controlled by only a handful of tech firms. When you use a generative AI app, you at times just leap into a conversation that you start and continue along with the AI. Based on this series of approvals and disapprovals, the generative AI is roughly able to pattern match what seems okay to emit and what seems to not be allowable. A related aspect is whether the generative AI is in real-time scanning the Internet and adjusting on-the-fly the computational pattern-matching. Once a generative AI app has been initially data trained, such as by scanning text across the Internet, human reviewers are utilized to help guide or showcase to the AI what is worthwhile of saying and what is scandalous to say.

Dubbed the “Waluigi effect”, it seems to be the outcome of the fact that while understanding the full details of what constitutes ethical action is hard and complex, the answer to “should I be ethical?” is a much simpler yes or no question. But some worry that the better you teach an AI system the rules, the better you teach that same system how to break them. The system can pass the bar exam, solve logic puzzles, and even give you a recipe to use up leftovers based on a photo of your fridge – but its creators warn it can also spread fake facts, embed dangerous ideologies, and even trick people into doing tasks on its behalf.

That being whether alternative approaches are required to fundamentally solve issues of truthfulness and reliability, or [whether](https://lastweekin.ai/p/the-ai-scaling-hypothesis) throwing more data and resources at language models will eventually do the job. [Kosmos-1](https://dailynous.com/2023/03/02/multimodal-llms-are-here/), a language model that accepts visual inputs the same way GPT-4 does. [technical report](https://cdn.openai.com/papers/gpt-4.pdf) controversially provides no details about how the model was developed, all signs indicate it’s essentially a scaled-up version of GPT-3.5 with safety improvements. Google also recently expanded its [PaLM](https://ai.googleblog.com/2022/04/pathways-language-model-palm-scaling-to.htm) language model to be able to take in image data and sensor data collected from robots. GPT-4 is much better at declining inappropriate requests and avoiding harmful content when compared to the initial ChatGPT release. [results](https://openai.com/research/gpt-4) highlighted by OpenAI, what immediately stands out is GPT-4’s performance on a range of standardised tests. One could argue GPT-4 represents only an incremental improvement over its predecessors in many practical scenarios. GPT-4 is a large language model (LLM), a neural network trained on massive amounts of data to understand and generate text. The GPT-4 model introduces a range of enhancements over its predecessors. This allows for richer storytelling, more in-depth analysis, summaries of long pieces of text and deeper conversational interactions. Such skills are beyond the scope of previous models.
