Artist John Olsen likens his latest project which will light up the Sydney Opera House sails, to a pizza spreading over Sydney Harbour.

At the Sydney Opera House, Lighting of the Sails will see the vibrant works of one of Australia’s most famed artists, John Olsen, brought to life as a spectacular tribute to his illustrious artistic career of more than 60 years. A vivacious line-up will see live performances from headliners Christine Anu, Rhys Nicholson, David Campbell and more each Friday and Saturday from 9pm to 1am during the festival. The new projection will see a group of young artists aged 7–14 working closely with content studio Spinifex to animate, bring to life and project their works onto one of Sydney’s oldest buildings. Following its debut in 2022, Vivid House returns – but this year bigger and better at the Cutaway in Barangaroo, activating every night of the festival with 360-degree immersive natural experiences bringing together art, light, sound and video from local and international artists. Curated by Vivid Sydney’s First Nations Advisor Rhoda Roberts AO, First Light will open the festival on Friday 26 May with a Welcome to Country and performances including musical trailblazers Yothu Yindi, the Yolngu supergroup and ARIA Hall of Fame members behind the hit song Treaty. Conceptualised by Gill Minervini in collaboration with the Australian Traffic Network, Written in the Stars will be an awe-inspiring journey through the natural world as it explores our solar system, from the Sun to Neptune. “Vivid Sydney is the original festival of light, art and culture. Meanwhile, Vivid Residence will be an unmissable new dining experience, bringing one of the world’s most revered chefs to the culinary capital of Australia. The Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House line-up will feature more than 40 Australian and international artists. The Vivid Music program will spotlight First Nations and Australian voices this year. Life Enlivened (2023) will include Olsen’s Salute to Five bells (1971–73) mural commissioned especially for the Northern Foyer of Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall, as well as other artworks spotlighting Olsen’s fascination with Australian landscapes and nature.

House of Naturalia will take over Barangaroo House and feature a custom menu by head chef Tara Chua and a party that goes on from day to night. The Opera House features an excellent line-up of events and performers including Devonté Hynes with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Cat Power, Budjerah, Weyes Blood, Thundercat and more. It will highlight the works of 100+ light collaborators and 26 international light artists from 13 countries. Sydney's festival of lights, music, and ideas has dropped its full program for 2023 and, boy, does it deliver.

Off the back of the success of last year's Vivid Dinner, the all-new food lineup includes some past favourites, like the Vivid Sydney is taking over 11 Sydney locations from Friday 26 May to Saturday 17 June 2023. Hosting parties in the legendary Opera House basement will be Mad Racket, Future Classic, Picnic Party, and House of Mince. In more good news, the renowned Light Walk has been extended and will now stretch 8.5km, from Sydney Opera House all the way to Central Station. It's happening at 5.30pm on Vivid's opening night, Friday 26 May, at Campbells Cove in The Rocks, and will feature Gadigal storytelling projections on a pylon of Sydney Harbour Bridge. This year, a whopping 11 Sydney CBD locations are lighting up with a kaleidoscopic display of lasers, art projections, and lights. As well as its usual luminous projections, concerts, open-air raves, thought-provoking panels, and late-night parties, there are heaps of fresh events and happenings on the lineup. The festival of light, music, and ideas is set to descend upon the harbour city from Friday 26 May, and run until Saturday 17 June.

The Australian National Maritime Museum, from May 26 until June 17, presents Harbour Life as part of Vivid Sydney 2023. Harbour Life is a 7-minute.

The museum is also an excellent entry point to the 8.5km Vivid Sydney Light Walk. To get the chance to shine a light on one of them and bring it to life is always a great thrill and honour for Artists in Motion. Harbour Life takes the audience on a journey through Australia’s marine environment through the eyes of a turtle in line with Vivid Sydney’s 2023 theme, Vivid Sydney, Naturally.
