“Of course he is in the side at the moment because Ryan Matterson is suspended until Round 4, but he is certainly making a case to hold that No.13 jersey,” Duke said. Mitch Moses had the crowd on its feet when he dummied to score late in the first half and then trimmed the margin to four points when he backed up a J’maine Hopgood break. Trindall has been fantastic in the No.7 jersey and laid on Cronulla’s opening two tries to Briton Nikora and Will Kennedy before Moylan gave the visitors the lead at the break when he set up his fullback for a first-half double. Sivo has now scored 38 tries from 39 matches at the venue after he finished off a stunning 60-metre team try in the first half and then steamrolled Sione Katoa after the break with a trademark run from close range. We’ll never know, but he may have had a third if Waqa Blake had passed him the ball in the final minute, but instead his centre partner dummied and fumbled it metres from the line. Moses provided the Eels with a glimmer of hope in the final 10 minutes of the game, but it wasn’t enough to get Brad Arthur’s side over the line who now sit 0-2 to start the season. They were 80 minutes away from ending the longest premiership drought in the NRL last year, but the Eels are now facing a potential 0-5 start to the season after losing to Cronulla with some brutal matches on the horizon. They will start outsiders in all three of those games with last year’s dream run a distant memory after blowing golden opportunities against weakened opposition in both of their games to start the season. To start the second half Maika Sivo charged over his opposite man in Sione Kato to score before Cronulla scored a full-field try. In the 20th minute Will Kennedy scored his first try of the night, throwing a big dummy and slicing through the line. Parramatta halfback Mitchell Moses then scored on the stroke of halftime before he showed his frustration after copping a knee from Kennedy in cover defence. The Sharks and Eels traded blows with 10 tries scored in a blockbuster CommBank Stadium clash as the Cronulla side came away with a 30-26 win.

Moses grabbed a late try and they went in the hunt for a late score, but the Sharks were able to hold on and secure their first win of the season. Kennedy dropped a bomb that allowed Moses to dart over for his first try of the night, before the Sharks number one backed up an incisive break by Matt Moylan to put Cronulla up 18-14 at the half-time break. With the Sharks down 10-0 early in the first half, Kennedy grabbed his first career hat-trick as Cronulla condemned the Eels to consecutive losses to start the season.

Sharks show great Will power to down Eels in thriller (NRL.COM)

A Will Kennedy hat-trick led the Sharks to a 30-26 win over the Eels in a Friday night shootout at CommBank Stadium.

“I am sure it was a cracking game for the neutrals to watch, thought it was ebbing and flowing. You don’t come here and get a free hit and they were playing for Mitch’s 200th and Paulo’s 150th, I thought we had an opportunity to put the screws into them, bit disappointed we let them off the hook there, but also I am proud of the spirit amongst them and the effort, we’ll get the tactical and technical parts right. Taking the ball five metres on his own side of halfway, Moylan went to the line and bamboozled Eels lock J'maine Hopgood with a show-and-go. Kennedy ran for183 metres on the night to go with three line breaks and the first hat-trick of his career. After defending their line grimly for three sets the Sharks broke away through an intercept by Ronaldo Mulitalo, who was cut down by Moses in a great cover tackle. He also ran for 180 metres on the night.

It's a long, long season so we don't need to start stressing now." They didn't have to work too hard for a lot of them." That's the rule," he said. It's disappointing, but it's the way the game is. The Sharks scored twice in the 15 minutes when Gutherson was pulled off by the independent doctor and the Eels struggled to continue their early dominance. We've got a short turnaround into Manly and we just have to believe in what we're doing and that what we're doing will work. "It's part of the game. "(It was) disappointing because you obviously don't want to go off. We just have to deal with it and we have to deal with it better," Arthur said. Jirah Momoisea played 23 minutes. "We've got a lot of good players that start for us in Junior and Reg and I think they're pretty important to the team," he told reporters in the post-match press conference. As a result two players failed to take the field in the club's opening two rounds, leaving the team's props on the field for extended periods on the field.
