Calls for flood warning review of agency 'failings' ahead of Baarka ... (ABC News)

Menindee residents say authorities owe them answers as to how flood level predictions were bungled when the Baarka-Darling River broke its banks in January.

"The government spent a lot of money to get that stuff right, and poor calls by all three agencies hasn't helped anyone," he said. Mr McCrabb has called for a "genuine review" from the government. "We had poor notification, so it took a lot of people by surprise," Mr McCrabb said. He said there had been months to prepare for the arrival of the water but the flood level predictions and communications were bungled, which meant a lot of people were caught out. "If it had of been an old house it might not have been so bad, but everything in that house was brand new," Mr Grose said. "We were prepping ourselves for one level," Mr Grose said.

"What that also does is create shade on the ground, but also that water in the the soil itself allows seeds that are a part of the seed bank to germinate," she said.

2 dead, nearly 10000 under evacuation orders as California floods ... (CNN)

At least two people have died as the result of the ongoing storms inundating California, and nearly 10000 residents are under evacuation orders, ...

Rainfall totals through Sunday morning could range from 1.5 to 3 inches for most urban areas with between 3 and 6 inches in the coast ranges and inland hills. The looming forecast led some ski resorts to announce closings. And in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, about 4 inches of snow has already fallen with the possibility of another 5 inches coming today. A separate system is also delivering snow to a large swath of the central US with winter weather alerts in place Friday from South Dakota to Connecticut. The rainfall caused deadly flooding, mudslides and damaged critical infrastructure that has not been yet repaired in some places, which elevates the potential danger associated with this week’s storm. Soquel resident Molly Watson shared a photo with CNN showing a large piece of road washed out by floodwaters in the town. “It’s just starting right now to feel like it was before the storms. By Friday afternoon, floodwaters in the county had “risen considerably” and an evacuation order was put in place for all residents, according to the sheriff’s office. It’s getting worse by the minute.” But rain will continue through the weekend and could lead to more flooding concerns. CalTrans, the state’s transportation department, has about 4,000 crew members working 12-hour shifts during this weather event, who are already removing downed trees and clearing drainage culverts to minimize flooding, deputy director John McKeever said. Meanwhile, the state of emergency declaration requested by Gov.
