The Mandalorian: What Is The Mythosaur? | Geek Culture (Geek Culture)

For the first time in Star Wars live-action, fans finally get a glimpse of the legendary Mythosaur in season three of The Mandalorian.

As mentioned, this is only a short glimpse of what we hope will be a big debut in the later episodes of The Mandalorian. Though extinct, the mythosaur lived on as a legendary figure in Mandalorian mythology and became a big part of the culture. We have seen the mythosaur – well, more accurately the mythosaur skull sigil – plenty of times in Star Wars. In season one of The Mandalorian, Kuiil teased Din Djarin for not being able to ride his blurrg and pointed out that his ancestors used to ride mythosaurs. A Mythosaur is a large beast that lived on the Outer Rim planet of Mandalore. If you were just as shocked as Bo-Katan to see that the mythosaur is not (pun intended) a myth, you’re not the only one.

The Mandalorian Mythosaur ending explained (EW.com)

Will receiving the shock of her life at the end of 'The Mines of Mandalore' lead Bo-Katan Kryze to question everything she's ever known about Mandalore?

Add to that the conflict over who should wield the Darksaber and the future of Mandalore looks pretty complicated indeed. Beskar being pretty heavy, he's sunk all the way to the bottom by the time Bo-Katan finds him, and it is on the way back to the surface that she gets the surprise of her life. But the episode also revealed that she's filled with regret most likely, as was covered in The Clone Wars, because she had such a part to play in the fighting of the past, undermining her own sister, Duchess Satine Kryze, because she didn't believe in her pacifistic leadership. With the remnants of fallen Mandalorians all around him and trapped in a tight cage, Mando dispatches Grogu to get Bo-Katan's help. [Katee Sackhoff](http://ew.com/person/katee-sackhoff)) spied a very alive Mythosaur in the depths of the living waters in the mines of Mandalore. A giant beast known as the mythosaur made its first appearance right before the end of The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2.

Even during the events of the rise and fall of the Empire, warriors such as Boba Fett displayed a mythosaur skull emblem on their armor. According to the legend, Mandalore the Great tamed and rode a mythosaur, which had a lair in the mines of Mandalore, the same place where Mandalorians extracted their precious beskar. The second installment in the latest The Mandalorian season brought the titular hero back to Mandalore, the abandoned home planet of all Mandalorians.

The Mandalorian's New Star Wars Quest Just Changed Everything ... (Den of Geek)

We need to talk about Mandalore, the mythosaur, and how The Mandalorian just changed Star Wars lore forever.

But as the return of the mythosaur proves, nothing is ever really what it seems when it comes to these Mandalorians. Not only is he the rightful wielder of the Darksaber, which allows him to claim the throne of Mandalore according to warrior tradition, but he’s also found the mythosaur that was foretold. But beyond how the return of the mythosaur affects these characters on a personal level, there’s now something even bigger afoot, and it goes back to a Mandalorian prophecy that predicts a revival for Mandalore and its people. Was Boba Fett, whose armor is emblazoned with the skull of the mythosaur, destined to unite the Mandalorian clans and lead them back to their home world? And while this may just seem like [a fun easter egg](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/star-wars-the-mandalorian-season-3-episode-2-chapter-18-easter-eggs/) to the casual viewer, the arrival of the mythosaur to The Mandalorian has huge implications for the future of Mandalore and the [Star Wars](https://www.denofgeek.com/star-wars/) galaxy. The Mythosaur is less a beast or a monster, and more a sign of things to come. But the presence of the Mythosaur makes her second prophecy much more relevant: "The songs of eons past foretold of The Mythosaur rising up to herald a new age of Mandalore." The image of the Mythosaur goes back a long way in the Star Wars canon. Evan is the culture editor for Men’s Health, with bylines in The New York Times, MTV News, Brooklyn Magazine, and VICE. In one, she mentioned that whoever wields the Darksaber would rule all of Mandalore. Their image and likeness has shown up in The Mandalorian corner of the Star Wars-verse. However, when Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, almost all of the Star Wars Expanded Universe up until that point was re-established as "Legends," or: not canon. [Darksaber](https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a34530319/what-is-the-darksaber-the-mandalorian/) in the meantime). It was further illustrated in between those films in the Marvel Comics-produced Star Wars #69. These beasts are supposed to be long-extinct, but were believed to roam on Mandalore thousands of years earlier; the first Mandalorians supposedly tamed them and even rode them. This has nothing to do with giant blue people or the planet of Pandora though; Bo-Katan is startled because this is, indeed, a Mythosaur.

The Mandalorian: Mythosaur And Mandalore History, Explained (Game Rant)

Episode 2 of The Mandalorian's season 3 introduced a mythical Star Wars monster, yet one never before seen on screen.

It goes without saying that Din Djarin and Bo-Katan are not on the best terms, in fact, when Grogu returns she outright wants to dispose of Mando on the spot. Having established that, the Mythosaur represents one more item that could spark conflict between Bo-Katan and Din Djarin, hence another motive for opposing Mandalorian groups to face off in a grueling civil war. That alone helps drive home the idea that Mythosaurs are thought to be extinct, yet they do play a big part in Mandalorian civilization. [canon debut in The Empire Strikes Back](https://gamerant.com/star-wars-jedi-survivor-empire-strikes-back-similar-dark-story/) as the creature depicted on Boba Fett's armor, and since then these dinosaur-like monsters have become a treasured part of The Mandalorian's growing lore. [The Mandalorian](https://gamerant.com/tag/the-mandalorian/) itself has dedicated a few lines to setting up these monsters' entrance into Din Djarin’s story way before Bo-Katan took him to the Living Waters of Mandalore. Long believed to be extinct, Mythosaurs are an important piece of Mandalorian history that could define the series’ path moving forward.
