Latrell Mitchell racial abuse: NRL blockbuster between South ... (7NEWS.com.au)

Jason Demetriou has unleashed an emotional tirade at the young culprit, calling for a 'life ban'.

He managed to play the game out, albeit with ankle strapping and a limp. “I shouldn’t have to come here as a coach and lead a team of players here to be racially abused. As far as I’m concerned, we’ll go as far as we can take it.” “We’ll go all the way, as far as we can with it. Anyone who wants to racially abuse, get them out of the game. “It’s not the first time we’ve come here and our players have been racially abused. It’s not what our game’s about and we have to stamp it out completely. NRL, clubs - they have to get rid of it. It’s just not on. It’s got to end.” Demetriou lauded the character of Mitchell to play on and star in the second half after the slur. “From what I understand, the security have done a great job identifying who it is, the club’s done a great job identifying who it is, and now we’ll take it through the police,” Demetriou told reporters.

Souths players fear racial abuse will force Mitchell to quit (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Latrell Mitchell was the alleged target of racist abuse as the players came from the field at half-time in Penrith on Thursday night.

“Emotions are high in the middle of a game already, and to have that comment made ... “He’s explained to the boys at times little bits [about what he goes through]. “It’s so unfortunate. Penrith’s Nathan Cleary has played in NSW Origin and Kangaroos teams with Mitchell. I heard what had been said, and they were trying to point [the fan] out. EGroup, which controls security at Penrith’s home ground, examined footage of the incident late on Thursday. “Latrell was OK in the sheds, but it’s something Latrell has faced all his life, he’s learnt to respond to it and be resilient, and while it doesn’t make it acceptable or appropriate, he’s tough and happy to stand up for himself.” And why? “Latrell is such a pivotal person in our game, he brings fans in to watch, I always enjoy watching him, I enjoy coming up against him, and I enjoy playing with him. “I was one of the last off the field, I caught the end of it. “I saw a few of the boys having a scuffle, I ask ‘Codes’ [Walker] what was going on, and he said what was said. Mitchell was said to be fine in the sheds, and had become almost immune to the vitriol directed at him over the years.

The star player and several [Souths](https://7news.com.au/sport/south-sydney-rabbitohs) teammates heard the slur as they walked into the tunnel at halftime. “I echo the words of our Head Coach Jason Demetriou from last night’s press conference. “We thank the stadium security and the NRL for their efforts last night and we look forward to a day when our players can perform on the field, our staff and volunteers can do their jobs off the field and our Members and supporters can support their team from the stands, without having to be subjected to this type of disgusting behaviour.” “The only way this is going to stop is if EVERYONE makes the effort to stamp this out. “This is a deeply disappointing situation, something that our players should never be subjected to, and we feel as a Club that the strongest possible action needs to be taken against the perpetrators. “I’ve spoken with both (NRL CEO) Andrew Abdo and (Panthers CEO) Matt Cameron this morning and they have both said they condemn this activity and have given me the undertaking that they will investigate this completely and take the strongest action possible. “This is not something Latrell just cops on the footy field, this is something he’s had to deal with his whole life. “There’s no point in a game where you should feel like you have the right to say stuff like that to a player. “It’s really disappointing,” Robinson told the media on Friday morning, while Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly called the behaviour “abhorrent” and “antiquated”.
