The Finals: Battlefield alums made anything but a typical shooter (Polygon)

The Finals, a new free-to-play first-person shooter from Embark, a studio founded by former EA DICE and Battlefield developers, will stage a closed beta ...

The Finals’ classes are somewhat bog-standard but for the gadgets they can swap into and out of their loadouts. My team was fortunate to defend a station that was located in an elevator, and one of our guys used the Goo Gun to wall off the open door; then they got on top of the elevator car, blasted through the shaft wall, and opened fire from there. Lacking a minimap, or anything other than directional audio to alert me to the enemy’s presence, there’s a real premium on knowing where the other team is. We were at a cash-out station at one end of it, and blowing up the bridge helped preserve our $6,000 gain, good for third place that round. The game is positioned in the shooter-as-competition style embraced by Apex Legends, except this seems to be set in present day (at least the near future) and the locations are real-life. But if two teams are headed for the same objective, it might be better to continue to another undefended vault and haul it away; the money you get for cashing out is going to be well more than you get even for wiping out a whole fireteam. Image: Embark Studios via Polygon](https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24482748/lightLoadout.png) [The Medium class has the widest array of gadgets available, but only two guns — the AKM assault rifle and the .357. It’s the effective use of that destruction that will separate the winners from the meat in The Finals. It’s entirely in the moment, reflecting either the collateral damage of a landmine set in a parking garage stairwell, or the deliberate choice to blow out a wall instead of looking for the door. Players rally to one of three vaults, grab its box, and hustle that to a cash-out station, which they must defend through a countdown. I played on an [Alienware Area 51m](https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/8/18167444/alienware-area-51m-desktop-laptop-features-price-release-date-ces-2019), with its GeForce RTX 2060 — not a bad setup, sure, but one that’s also four years old — and I never saw a framerate drop the entire time. The Finals is not a battle royale, nor an extraction shooter, nor does it resemble [any buzzy sub-genre du jour](https://www.polygon.com/23604742/extraction-shooter-battle-royale-pubg-fortnite-call-of-duty-dmz) among first-person shooters.

It will be interesting to see how audiences take to its unique gameplay loop and how Embark Studios expands upon it in the future. My squad would blast through walls and destroy structures in order to make the perfect path from a Vault to a Cashout spot. The team with the most cash at the end of a game is deemed the winner. The conditions of these maps will change every game, creating new challenges and forcing players to adapt their strategies. Where The Finals really sets itself apart is in the endless ways you can go about acquiring a Vault and taking it to the Cashout point. The Finals is an incredibly chaotic shooter that’s brimming with potential.

Why Embark Is Making The Finals, Another First-Person Shooter In ... (GameSpot)

"It's a game where contestants are given the freedom to choose who they want to be and how they want to play." "The Finals is a game show at heart," creative director Gustav Tilleby said. Then another couple of months later that pitch was good enough so we felt that we want to go and try to build this game because we felt that we had something that actually could change the genre and that's how The Finals was born." "To be completely honest, I didn't, or we didn't think that we would ever build a first-person shooter game again," Runesson said during a preview event for The Finals. "The team presented a small pitch, and what we saw was actually something that made us all laugh and smile and still actually gives me goosebumps," Runesson said. The Finals, a free-to-play first-person shooter with an emphasis on environmental destruction and teamplay, is scheduled to launch first and looks a whole lot more like the high-octane action in the Battlefield series.

THE FINALS Preview: A Refreshing Take On A Multiplayer Arena ... (MMORPG.com)

Multiplayer shooters are a dime a dozen nowadays, so games truly have to do something special to stand out among the crowd right now. THE FINALS is one such ...

Learning how to work together not just to engage an enemy, but set a trap say with proximity mines, or figuring out how to level a building quickly to achieve an end, these types of approaches are going to benefit your team in the long run. It’s an awesome realization too, as it just opens up so many more avenues to experience the game and make it your own. It was something I would remember during another firefight over a cache being extracted: Knocking down the building around the extractor could get it out of the clutches of our enemy long enough for us to disrupt the upload. How you use these will depend on your approach, but it adds to the utility of each member of the party. THE FINALS also throws environmental dangers into the mix as well, though the only map I played during our playtest that showed any original weather, dense fog on Monaco, crashed to the desktop. You can also set a reserve loadout that is available for you to swap weapons before a match, though this was a bit confusing to use. From destructible buildings that could drop someone through the floor to meet their maker to floating caches of environmental effects that can be used against your enemy, the shooter requires much more nimble thinking. As a free-to-play title, THE FINALS will be selling cosmetic microtransactions and a battle pass to players as a way to support its development, and these can be added as whole outfits or piecemeal to truly customize your look. From there you’ll set your loadout, which are the only weapons you’ll carry into a match of THE FINALS. It reminds me a lot of the old Battlefield games, like Battlefield 3 or Battlefield Bad Company 2, with the level of destruction that can be brought to bear. From there you build your loadout from weapons that each of the body types can use. The gist of THE FINALS sees four teams of three (so twelve total players) jump into a match that plays out like something of an extraction shooter.

The Finals tips and tricks that lead you to victory (For The Win)

Think about it this way: the more chaos there is, the more chaos your opponents will also have to cope with. We’d recommend you take your time to experiment around a bit with different builds to see what you have most fun with. If the enemy beats you to a position by just a few moments, don’t go in immediately. This gear is not actually consumable, but works on a cooldown basis, which incentivizes you to take different pieces of equipment with you. Before you’re able to pick your gear, The Finals asks you to define your character’s size – light, medium, and heavy are available. If that sounds like a lot of hard work, you can always try to benefit from robbing another team, who did most of that for you already.

Away from the battlefield, a predictable but welcome slew of customization options promise hours of light entertainment, as does unlocking The Finals' wide-ranging arsenal of guns and the various loadouts that complement the game's suite of playstyles out on the field in either ranked or casual play. By the time I'd headshotted the dude I thought was in possession of the money, I realized they'd made the swap with another teammate who'd circled me unawares and taken the same rappel line out of the danger zone. I continued sprinting, threw myself down into the next office block below, and was swiftly shot in the back of the head at point-blank range by a different crew member who just happened to be lingering there. While transferring a money lockbox across the skyscraper-filled Seoul map – at present, The Finals has this map and another in old-town Monaco, on the banks of the French Riviera – I was spotted by two opposing crew members and chased up three flights of stairs. The devs and the game's PR team are here to promote The Finals, and I'm here to play it. That success is measured by the amount of money you and your teammates manage to bank during each round.

The Finals has frenetic gameplay full of destruction | hands-on preview (VentureBeat)

The first-person shooter action in Embark Studios' The Finals moves pretty fast. And if you're a bit slow on the draw, the action can pass you by.

We want to tell you how the news matters to you -- not just as a decision-maker at a game studio, but also as a fan of games. I think they need to make the menu more intuitive, add a variety of weaponry, explain it well in a tutorial, and add controller support. I’m sure all of that is coming, and so I’ll have to conclude that the game has potential. I think they should tweak that to enable longer matches, since you spend a lot of time running to get back to the action. At the vault, you have to activate a big gold box that has a bunch of loot in it. As I stepped back to observe, it was easy for me to tell who the developers were, or at least the players who had good experience. This particular setting was a good one because of the stone and wooden buildings. I liked how the gunfire left holes in the wall and chipped off chunks of concrete. If I had figured out how to get a grenade launcher, that would have been the most fun because the game pushes environmental dynamism, destruction, and player freedom as much as it can. And so I had to play with a mouse and keyboard, and that wasn’t pretty. But I didn’t see many of them in the hour or so that I played. This title is a free-to-play team shooter that I tried out at a press event last week in preparation for the launch of the game’s two-week closed beta test, which runs from March 7 to March 21.

At one moment, the station my team was delivering to was out in the open in a park. One particularly memorable moment saw my team calling two elevators in Seoul, only to find that another team had put a turret in one and all of themselves in another. Because matches are fluid and the objective is currency-based, smart team play is much more helpful in The Finals. The Finals is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. As soon as explosives get involved, the map transforms as buildings crumble and the environment reacts to the players. I was under fire, and an opponent’s rocket completely destroyed the pathway to get me to the building my teammates were in. Players can customize their characters with outfits and special loadouts ahead of matches, and some of these options allow them to set down jump pads and ziplines or use a grappling hook to improve mobility. It stays that way too, as developer Embark Studios’ server-side technology tracks and accommodates any changes to the map. The basics of the FPS gameplay are approachable enough for anyone who has played a game in this genre before. Developed by Embark Studios, the new multiplayer shooter is a notable change of pace for a stagnating genre. That’s why The Finals’ longer time-to-kill, unique match objectives, and focus on level destruction all feel like a breath of fresh air. To me, it has stagnated, with recent Call of Duty and
