How the Dolphins orchestrated a famous first victory (NRL.COM)

On Sunday afternoon the Dolphins produced one of the best debut outings seen from an expansion side, and here's how they did it.

The Bromwich brothers, Jesse and Kenny, churned through the work with a combined tally of 62 tackles and 242 metres, while off the bench prop Mark Nicholls changed the game in his two stints, scoring a try and powering to 174 run metres, in contrast to a Roosters bench who all failed to go for more than 75 metres with ball in hand. The high median age of the Dolphins' first-choice forward pack was viewed as a potential weakness in the lead up to the season, and on Sunday they fielded five big men aged 30 or over, with their starting pack having an average age of 29. [that few saw the Roosters tripping up in Round 1 against the Dolphins](/news/2023/03/02/nrl-tipping-expert-tips-and-predictions-for-round-1/), who were expected to struggle early on as combinations were built, in a roster which as it was had failed to excite many due to the perceived lack of a genuine superstar.

The chance they took getting a club into the NRL, having 30,000-plus people today, it was a great occasion and there's so many wins today. So a loss today would've put us under a lot of pressure. One of the most difficult things is to get that first win because it just settles everything down.

The bunker decided that Flanagan had committed a professional foul and sent him to the sin bin for ten minutes. Manly scored two tries while the Bulldogs were down a man, taking the score to 18-6. The Manly fullback fell to the ground as the ball bounced away. At Leichhardt Oval, the Titans showed they need to work on their short drop-out game, kicking two of them clear over the sideline for penalties right in front. It was just the early stages of a man-of-the-match performance from the young Souths halfback, who is set for a big year. It didn't take long for the head scratching to start thanks to some ridiculous bunkers calls. The kick was perfectly executed by Scott Drinkwater, but both Kyle Feldt and Peter Hiku went up for the ball with Chad Townsend also in the mix. Out of dummy-half Jeremy Marshall-King was having his best game ever, picking and choosing the right time to contribute and shoring up the ruck with his tireless tackling. It was the ultimate example of giving everything, even when the outcome seems inevitable. Even then, there was a feeling that the Roosters would somehow storm home to snatch the competition points. On Thursday night, as the Storm fought an intense battle against the Eels, Cameron Munster came out of a tackle on Clint Gutherson grasping at his right hand, obviously distressed. Another Isaako try put the Dolphins beyond reach and their spirited defence meant that the Roosters weren't travelling well enough to catch them.

NRL LIVE: Dolphins make late change for long-awaited debut as Roosters reshuffle bench.

The Chooks will be without Joey Manu though, who is sideline due to a facial injury. Meanwhile, the Roosters have brought in Drew Hutchison at centre, with Corey Allan switching to the bench and Jake Turpin coming onto the pine in place of Fletcher Baker. But the Dolphins will still have plenty of experience around Katoa with the likes of Felise Kaufusi, the Bromwich brothers and Jarrod Wallace up front. The Dolphins will make history when they run out onto Suncorp Stadium on Sunday for their first NRL game in a clash with the Roosters for the Artie Legacy Medal. The Dolphins have made a late change with Conelly Lemuele coming onto the bench for Herman Ese’ese. The Dolphins and the Sydney Roosters are all square at 0-0 in their clash at Suncorp Stadium.

Phins up: History made as Dolphins stun Roosters in season opener (NRL.COM)

Wayne Bennett's Dolphins have produced a stunning NRL debut, defeating competition heavyweight Roosters 28-18 at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

"Our forwards sort of got dominated in the ruck and they opened us up a couple of times in the first half and definitely the start of the second half. We wanted to start the year strong and have a good win especially going into our bye in Round 4 so it's disappointing." We got outworked and got what we deserved in the end." While the Roosters host the Warriors at Allianz Stadium. They were really tight pressuring the ruck and they did really well. The competition newcomers looked as if they'd been playing together for years when the forwards and backs linked up to produce some slick ball movement down the right hand side.

The final 20 minutes of the half was a back-and-forth duel between both sides as the Dolphins were forced on the backfoot on a few occasions. The Dolphins continued to carry the momentum and doubled the lead just moments later after Jamayne Isaako took advantage of an overlap on the left side and breezed over the line to put the hosts ahead by 12 with half an hour left to play. The Dolphins have defied the odds and completed their debut NRL game with a triumphant win.

In winning their inaugural NRL match, the Dolphins have found a ... (ABC News)

After their first NRL game, the Dolphins could win a thousand matches but they can only win for the first time once.

Imagine now, just for a moment, if you were there for the first time. Imagine handing the team down to whoever comes after you and telling them that, yeah, you were there when it happened, when they started it off with a win. It took a special effort for them to win on Sunday and summoning that level of fortitude two weeks in a row is tough, even for a Wayne Bennett team. The Dolphins have existed for a long time. As the sun rises over Redcliffe, you have to understand how much this matters, because winning is the finest thing a team can do, so long as they can actually do it. So think about that team you love. Calling themselves "The Dolphins" instead of having an actual, geographic location is a misstep they'll be dealing with for years to come. Were you a little underwhelmed heading into that game on Sunday? It might be a team you live and die for every single day. It's just that you love it and, through that love, someone else would learn to do it too. Think about when they made you sad. Think about when they made you happy.
