"Instead, it's passed out to Viliame Kikau to get a kick away, and they turn it over 30m from their own line. "They only made 23m in this set - this was his chance to stand up and drive it down the field and cop their medicine. Pressure had been building on the boys from Belmore for a couple of sets, and after a set where they had only gained 23m, the ball made it's way not to Matt Burton, but to Viliame Kikau, who puts it into touch.

When it was ruled by the referee that he knocked on, he backed himself to challenge the call — and won. Instead he gets the ball out to Kikau to get it away and they turn it over. Burton’s got to have a few different ways to get him the ball.” But the 22-year-old was a long way off on Saturday. He threw a brilliant ball to put Jake Averillo through a gap before later putting in a perfectly-weighted long kick and was the first player to wrap up the Manly player that caught it. 10 minutes later, he kicked a grubber out of dummy-half and scooped it up after it ricocheted off the post and scored the Dogs’ only try of the afternoon. Mahoney saved a try early in the game and showed tremendous fight and skill to keep the ball in the field of play. Trbojevic’s movements away from the Steeden were controlled and low-key. Reed Mahoney was the Dogs’ best but even he came up with a head-scratcher when he kicked down the short side out of dummy half on the 50-metre line and it went out on the full. “He’s been brilliant, hasn’t played a trial,’ he has taken the game by the scruff of the neck and has been outstanding.” He clearly played within himself. His 40/20 attempt went out on the full, a kick-off went on the full and there was also the decision to pass the ball to Viliame Kikau on the last tackle and not use his own powerful kicking game.

'Ridiculous' call leaves great in disbelief (NEWS.com.au)

The Manly Sea Eagles took a lead into the halftime break against the Canterbury Bulldogs after an “outrageous” decision left the Dogs a man down.

“I cannot believe Kyle Flanagan is in the sin bin for what we saw on Tom Trbojevic. But the Sea Eagles were able to take advantage with just under five minutes of the sin bin remaining as Cherry-Evans scored Manly’s third try to make it 18-6 before Flanagan returned to the match. It sent the Sea Eagles to the break with a 12-6 lead. With the last play of the half, Addo-Carr picked up a pick through the line but when he was tackled, tried to offload and left the ball on the deck. But that was enough to convince the Bunker and while it wasn’t a try, it was as good as because Manly spread it wide on the third tackle and used the over lap for Garrick to put the Sea Eagles ahead 12-6. “Kyle Flanagan was moving backwards in the direction of the ball there,” he said.

Cherry on top as Turbo-charged Sea Eagles outclass Bulldogs (NRL.COM)

The return of superstar Tom Trbojevic and a captain's knock from Daly Cherry-Evans led Manly to a 31-6 win over the Bulldogs at 4 Pines Park on Saturday.

The Bulldogs travel to Melbourne in round two to face the Storm. The Sea Eagles have the bye in round two before a monster Thursday night showdown with Parramatta at 4 Pines Park to open round three. "We definitely made it hard for ourselves and our completions weren't where we needed them to be but I thought we showed a hell of a lot of grit there at different times to defend our tryline and to stay in the contest physically but there's a lot of lessons learned. Trbojevic got his foot to the rolling ball, nudged it into the in-goal and grounded it for the 79th try of his career and his first since round four last year. - Bulldogs winger Jacob Kiraz came off for a HIA in the 30th minute. Cooper Johns chased and looked to have touched down first but replays showed Bulldogs prop Max King had scrambled back to ground the ball in a massive play.

The Anthony Seibold era at Manly got off to a brilliant start thanks to a Daly Cherry-Evans hat-trick in a thumping win over the Bulldogs.

Cherry-Evans then did well early in the second half when he again grubbered for himself and somehow shouldered Josh Addo-Carr out of the way. He later quipped: “I knew I would have lost that [race] and didn’t want to embarrass myself. But Trbojevic looked back in-field and wanted to pass, leaving the chance for supporters to see him in full flight for another day. He helped lay on the first try for Trbojevic when he grubbered through, only for “Turbo” to keep the ball alive on his boot to score. “To have Chez back on the park today, it was great. He replaced Des Hasler over summer and worked overtime on bringing the playing group together.

2023 NRL Round 1: Sea Eagles 31, Bulldogs 6 (NothingButLeague)

A full house at 4 Pines Park saw Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles kick off the season in style with victory over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

All three tries were scored by Daly Cherry-Evans as he completed his first career hat-trick in a man of the match performance. Reed Mahoney struck back for the visitors, regathering his kick from dummy half after it hit the uprights to score under the posts. This forced the club to rethink their top 30 squad through a lack of prop forwards, resulting in Bailey Biondi-Odo being delisted as they search for Thompson’s replacement.

Brutal reality check puts Dogs in their place (NEWS.com.au)

Cameron Ciraldo will never forget his first match as a full-time first grade coach — but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.

“We’re going to be better every week but today there were things we didn’t do well and that’s unacceptable for us moving forward.” Instead he gets the ball out to Kikau to get it away and they turn it over. “I thought we showed a real lot of grit there at times. “Our completions weren’t where we needed them to be and where we gave them the ball wasn’t where we planned to. “Matt Burton’s got the longest boot in the competition, it was his chance to stand up and drive it down the field and they can just cop their medicine. With the influx of new troops, it was always going to take a little time for the combinations to gel but star five-eighth Matt Burton was off his game in the season-opener.

NRL Round 1: Tom Trbojevic, Anthony Seibold return in style for ... (Sporting News AU)

Tom Trbojevic's return to the NRL has gone off without a hitch, helping lead the Sea Eagles to a massive victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.

“It was just cramping – I took him off because the had the cramp, but he ended up coming back on. I just wanted to get on the field and get it over with. “We wanted to build our game in this early part of the season on our D, and I felt as though today we defended our try line well. A couple of times we scrambled when they put some grubber kick through. It makes the bye [next week] even better." "It was disappointing to end the year early last year and I had a six-month break over the off-season.

DCE Hat-Trick Helps Seibold's Sea Eagles Sink the Bulldogs (Sea Eagles)

Garrick converted his fifth goal from five attempts for a final scoreline of 31-6, capping off a great afternoon for the Manly faithful! On the cusp of halftime, both sides were involved in a scramble that almost resulted in a try for Manly debutant Cooper Johns (#641). Garrick converted to push the lead out to 18-6. “Turbo” passed to Garrick who found space on the left wing before putting a grubber kick back in-field. The home side pushed upfield and were awarded a handful of set restarts at the halfway mark but couldn’t capitalise on the momentum as they turned the ball over. Five-eighth Matt Burton converted from next to the posts to level the scores at 6-all.
