Moving south, the Category 3 cyclone was located north of Port Vila at 7am local time on Wednesday (20:00 GMT on Tuesday).
Cyclone Judy has been upgraded to a Category 4 storm and is intensifying further as it heads towards the southernmost islands of Vanuatu.
The capital was battered by hurricane force winds and there are early reports of damage to buildings, power lines and other infrastructure. Cyclones are becoming more intense as a result of climate change. There have been two category 5 cyclones — the highest there is — in the past 8 years — Cyclone Pam in 2015 and Cyclone Harold in 2023.
