Storm uproots trees and forces evacuations with power cuts reported in the Pacific island nation's capital.

Authorities issued a red alert in Port Vila and some other regions. Located to the east of Australia and the north of New Zealand, Vanuatu is made up of some 83 islands and is home to about 330,000 people. Moving south, the Category 3 cyclone was located north of Port Vila at 7am local time on Wednesday (20:00 GMT on Tuesday).

Cyclone Judy has been upgraded to a Category 4 storm and is intensifying further as it heads towards the southernmost islands of Vanuatu.

The capital was battered by hurricane force winds and there are early reports of damage to buildings, power lines and other infrastructure. Cyclones are becoming more intense as a result of climate change. There have been two category 5 cyclones — the highest there is — in the past 8 years — Cyclone Pam in 2015 and Cyclone Harold in 2023.

Plan accordingly for protracted commercial, transport, and logistics disruptions in areas in the path of the storm, especially if vital infrastructure is damaged. Authorities will likely update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days as the storm progresses. Heavy rainfall is forecast over central, southern, and parts of northern Vanuatu; flash flooding is likely in low-lying areas, areas close to the river banks, and along the coast. Authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas to seek shelter during the passage of the storm and have established emergency shelters in Port Vila and other at-risk areas for those unable to shelter safely at home. Forecast models indicate the system will weaken into a Category 3 Tropical Cyclone and then a Post-Tropical Cyclone as it tracks generally southeastward away from Vanuatu and New Caledonia into the South Pacific Ocean March 2-4.

Others were barricading themselves inside as authorities issued a red alert in the capital, Port Vila, and some other regions – meaning people shouldn’t leave their homes unless absolutely necessary. They said there were no initial reports of major destruction or deaths. Some people had moved to evacuation sites as heavy rainfall flooded their homes.
