Why 'Creed 3' made me cry for 15 minutes (SFGate)

Michael B. Jordan's latest film, 'Creed III,' made SFGATE columnist Rod Benson reflect on what it really means to retire from professional sports.

I would never be the athlete I was. I was a little over my playing weight and was losing in a 3-on-3 masters tournament in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. My entire career came into focus, and I truly appreciated it for the first time.

"Creed 3" deals with larger-than-life characters, big emotions, big revelations, big life events, big truths, and the script pulls all the stops. I'm not sure where the Creed franchise will go from here, as there were jabs taken at Adonis and Dame's ages as fighters. I don't know how this will go with anyone who might be exposed to spoilers, but I was reacting to practically every punch with noises and expletives—I was suddenly cursing like a sailor. At the press screening for "Creed 3," two guys in front of me said, "Killmonger vs. As with the previous Creed movies, the boxing sequences and matches were so well done! Notably, this will be the first time that Rocky creator Sylvester Stallone will be a no-show. The latest is Creed III, which is set for release on March 3. The film will also mark the actor’s directorial debut, a task which proved arduous during production.

'Creed III' Cast and Character Guide: Who's Stepping into the Ring ... (Collider.com)

Rocky may be retired, but Creed has still got some fight in him. Michael B Jordan and Jonathan Majors in creed 3 poster Image via United Artists Releasing.

The father and son duo continuously butt heads, but in the final match with Creed (with the hero winning this time), the two ultimately find peace and reconcile with each other, deciding to finally move on with their lives. The character wasn't killed off but is now spending a quiet time in retirement with his son and grandson, leaving boxing behind seemingly for good. Conlan does ultimately win his match with Adonis, but also shows humility and congratulates his opponent, recognizing him as a new star in the sport. Little Duke is the son of Duke Evers (Tony Burton), who trained both Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa. Outside his roles in Creed III and the MCU, the actor has starred in films and series such as Devotion (2022), Lovecraft Country (2020), The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019), The Harder They Fall (2021), and Da 5 Bloods (2020). Even though this child has no blood relation to her and is a reminder of her husband being unfaithful, Mary Anne doesn't feel an ounce of resentment for the boy and loves him as if she were her own. Since then, she has continued to be a supportive figure to Adonis, Bianca, and Amara, and will no doubt continue to be so in the upcoming installment. The Rocky/Creed series is almost as well known for its heroes as it is for its villains, bringing depth and humanity to both. Ultimately, our hero's past catches up to him, as he sees an old friend leaning on the hood of his car who is the start of a whole new set of problems for the Creed family. Just like that, Rocky became the father that Adonis never had, ultimately earning him a place outside of Apollo's shadow and introducing him to love with a local musician with Bianca (Tessa Thompson). The first installment in the Rocky saga in nearly a decade since Rocky Balboa (2006), Creed is a masterful revitalization of the series from filmmaker Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), following the son of legacy fan-favorite Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) as he begins his own journey to become a professional boxer, with Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) himself passing the torch to the new hero before the entire world knows the name Adonis Creed (Michael B. Here, Adonis has greatly matured from a lost young man into a responsible adult, continuing his career as a professional boxer and being a good father to his daughter and husband to his wife.

But with the inventiveness of Creed III, an old franchise suddenly feels fresh. Unfortunately, we won’t get to see Rocky in Creed 3 as the actor bids adieu to the franchise and hands off his boxing gloves to his protégé, Adonis Creed. Anime has some of the most stunning fight scenes, and Jordan, like a true anime lover, channeled his inner Goku and delivered a Dragon Ball Z punch in the ring. Damian’s entry also marks the introduction of a new villain in the franchise. Jordan even stated, “Being able to really feel like you’re in the ring with the fighters was a challenge that I wanted to see if we can pull it off, and the only way to do that was with IMAX.” You got to do this film justice by watching it on an IMAX screen at theaters like PVR and INOX. People scream with delight when Rocky Balboa rains his opponents with mighty punches in the ring, and his protégé Adonis Creed has followed his steps in Creed and Creed II.

I'm always kind of chilling until it's go-time, and then when it's go-time you go. Have you been able to relax a little bit when you're on set now, or are you still as intense as you used to be? It's a bit of – not a bit of – it's a two-hander. When the stakes are high in the movie, they're also high on set, and so the amount of energy that's pumping when we were shooting those scenes was uncanny. I'm curious, and I think we talked about this a little bit at Sundance, but how have you changed as an actor? The external is really great, and it's a part of our business, and I thank God for it. And I don't remember any of it. Yeah, seeing the two of you together, I'm already beyond excited. I guess probably the level of emotionality that's happening in that space. There's a part of me that just wants to constantly move and shift and grow. It's really fun to see, you know, but I can take more stock when I go, “Okay, so how is the instrument playing now?” You know, “How strong are we now?” And I can feel the growth of everything I've done, just internally.

But his childhood friend and one-time boxing prodigy Damian "Dame" Anderson reappears in his life after being released from prison wanting a chance in the ring. That last fight between Dame and Creed is probably the best fight of the Rocky and Creed franchises. Now leave the anime stuff to him because his lexicon on that stuff is just out of the roof. He had to do the same, in his way. And he had to capture it in a way that's not been done before. And we have to fight with a certain level of savagery that we haven't seen before in this world. And I was like, "Hell yeah, that's my man." But for the most part, a lot of that was due to my boxing coach, Rob Sally, and my acting partner, Michael B. 'Creed III' Keeps a Stellar Franchise Swinging (Vanity Fair)

Michael B. Jordan does double duty as director and star of a robust boxing drama.

Creed III is about the boys at heart, their triumphs and struggles as they play a slightly safer version of war. As a director, Jordan doesn’t do much in the way of flourishes, but he shows a sure hand in ratcheting up the film’s emotional and physical tension. She and Damian have a few charged encounters that are left unexplored; I wish that Thompson, so alert and persuasive in these films, had more of her own arc to play. Phylicia Rashad—who plays Creed’s stepmother, Mary Anne—glows in her few scenes, but she’s hurried out of the movie in an act of manipulation uncharacteristic of these films. Creed III continues the franchise tradition of delivering us the goods just when we’re ready for them, that climactic Rocky theme blaring away as we forget all of our high-minded qualms about boxing as a sport. A boyhood camaraderie endures, but there is more than a trace of resentment and anger flickering in Damian’s eyes as he regards all of Creed’s wealth and familial contentment. Perhaps some of the first film’s propulsive style is missing, but Jordan ably maintains the franchise’s smooth mechanics. Or maybe he senses an impending storm, which arrives in the form of Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors), an old friend of Creed’s who has spent the last twenty years in prison after an incident in his and Creed’s shared past. He’s made his name, and his fortune, as heavyweight champion of the world, and now has years ahead of him to spend with his wife, successful musician Bianca (Tessa Thompson), and their young daughter, Amara (Mila Davis-Kent), whose birth was the dramatic centerpiece of the last film. He pops in at the boxing gym he runs with his steadfast cornerman, Little Duke (Wood Harris)—though Duke is really supposed to be running that show, training a promising fighter, Felix Chavez (real-life boxer José Benavidez, Jr.), who is the heir apparent to Creed’s legacy. Here is a film franchise, born out of another six-film franchise, that has never felt tired or extraneous—indeed, it’s been just the opposite. The Creed movies should be studied.

Those deductions aside, the Jordan-Majors dynamic (as it happens, a faceoff of two topnotch Marvel villains) imbues the movie with heavyweight talent in more ways than one. The film brims with explosive energy and captivating performances, but it feels like two movies crammed into one.

The wail of his abused spirit seems to well up subtly in his eyes, the weight of endured indignities seems to bow his shoulders and furrow his brow. The idea is rendered agonizingly clear in “Creed III” through the destinies of Adonis, and of Dame. The soulfulness of his pain, however, burns away in the fire of his combat in the ring, and Dame’s resulting transformation—albeit an all-too-rapid and unconsidered one—turns the screen into a mirror and asks viewers what kind of Black men they want to take as heroes and why, and what the nature of such male heroism is. In “Creed,” directed by Ryan Coogler, the underlying subject is the exceptional chance that Adonis gets—and American society’s all-too-usual abandonment of far too many young people raised in similarly hard circumstances. The new film circles back to the opening, and the backstory, of the first film: Adonis’s troubled childhood years in a group home. is used in the Creed/Taylor household.) Now, in present-day Los Angeles, Adonis owns a boxing gym and manages a stable of fighters, including the current champ. Adonis is dubious, but he has a double motive: both a businessman’s sense of a marketable spectacle (the classic “Rocky”-like underdog story) and a guilty feeling of owing Dame big time. The new movie’s sense of undue brevity and haste is a result of its diminished connection to the “ Sylvester Stallone and his signature character are major presences in the first two “Creed” films but completely absent from “Creed III.” Instead, the new film develops a mythology of its own—a separate framework, involving an immense infrastructure of backstory that takes up lots of screen time and crowds out crucial aspects of the characters’ present-tense activities.

How Does 'Creed III' Handle Rocky's Absence? (Collider.com)

Sylvester Stallone has been with the 'Rocky' and 'Creed' films since the beginning, so how does the latest handle him not being around?

The only legacy character from the Rocky franchise that appears in Creed III is Adonis’ mother, Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashad, but was originally played by Lavelle Roby in Rocky and Syliva Meals in Rocky II and IV), who sadly passes away due to illness. The Creed franchise has begun to do the same thing; after their romance in the first film, Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and Adonis are married, and Creed III introduces their young daughter Amara (Mila Davis-Kent). In the original Creed, Stallone was given the opportunity to return to the character and add a completely new dimension to an icon that audiences had been rooting for since 1976. At the beginning of Creed, Rocky is in a state of distress. While the second film didn’t give Rocky as much to do as a character outside of trying to reconnect with his son, it still tied back heavily to the [Rocky](https://collider.com/tag/rocky/) mythology by bringing back the character of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) from Rocky IV. While the Rocky franchise had its ups and downs, Stallone was able to show him getting his last shot in the ring in the underrated 2006 sequel Rocky Balboa.

In addition to finally taking responsibility instead of running away like he did as a child, Creed had to work through his feelings instead of taking out his anger in unhealthy ways and remaining closed up. In addition to the potential of a Viktor Drago spinoff, Creed III suggests a spin-off with Jonathan Majors’ character, who has only just begun his boxing career. Fighting Dame proved all these things, and winning the match showed Dame that Creed was undefeated, the best at the game. When Adonis Creed became the world champion, there wasn't much more he could accomplish in the boxing world. [a Drago spinoff movie](https://screenrant.com/ivan-drago-movie-rocky-creed-spinoff-redemption-story/) could give the character the focus he has not received in the Creed movies so far. Dame wanted to prove that he was the best of the best, and Creed wasn’t about to let him win. It could be that he reached out to Creed offscreen. Getting back in the ring gave Dame a chance to exact revenge on Creed, facing him in a way that he couldn’t back then, simultaneously getting his name out there in the boxing world to kickstart his career. After revealing what he was really after — and the lengths he would go to get it — Dame challenged Adonis to a fight. Considering they knew each other well and Rocky would always check in on her, it seemed odd that he wouldn’t show up to her funeral or give Creed a call. Damien reached out to Creed after getting out of prison, but it wasn’t to rekindle their friendship.

Why Sylvester Stallone Isn't in 'Creed III' (Collider.com)

Rocky Balboa is missing from Creed 3 — if you're wondering why Sylvester Stallone will not be appearing in the movie, here's why.

Stallone has apparently made it clear that he is more than willing to come back in some capacity with Jordan as long as Winkler has nothing to do with it. He's already got generational wealth that will be handed down to all the future Stallones for at least the next one hundred years, but we get it that he's pissed off about not being able to say that Rocky is his to do with as he pleases and not watch the likes of Irwin Winkler determine the future legacy of his own creation. Some have wondered if Stallone has had some kind of disagreement with the new star of the franchise, Michael B. He wrote the screenplay for Rocky and created the gravy train that he believes Irwin is riding all the way to the bank. It's hard to believe that the two men that teamed up to create one of film's most iconic figures have grown apart to the point that Stallone would say such things and refuse to work with Winkler. Rocky Balboa, the man who started it all, will not be a part of the cast for the latest entry into the Rocky Cinematic Universe, and there's a story behind why he won't be reprising the character.
