As it was: Sequins and feathers as Harry Styles fans queue for ... (The Age)

Despite instructions not to queue at Marvel Stadium before 9am, hundreds of fans turned up in hope of getting as close as possible to their idol.

Ahead of the concert, the stadium enforced a strict 8am rule, warning that those who disobeyed would be refused entry – but many began queuing at 4am. More than 100,000 people are expected at Styles’ Melbourne concerts on Friday and Saturday. “I bought tickets to go to Sydney as well. Some had been lining up as early as 11am on Thursday. Some ticket holders had purchased allocated seats, but those with general admission reserved only a space in the standing section. There were similar scenes at his first Australian concert in Perth on Monday, with hordes of fans planning to camp days before in the hopes of getting a spot close to the stage. [I’ve spent] too much money.” So incredibly excited ... We’re so excited for tonight. Fans were moved inside the stadium around 10am on Friday by stadium officials ahead of the heat, which is expected to reach a top of 33 degrees. The long line was a frenzy of giddy fans – wearing sparkly costumes and feather boas – all of whom were determined to get as close as they could to the Grammy-winning musician in the flesh. Those at the front of the queue will get nearer to the stage – and Styles.

It’s fantastic to see more Australians embracing the DIY movement and choosing to create their own costumes or accessories as a form of fun and self-expression.” “Stores in Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania have completely sold out of feather boas. At Spotlight’s store in South Melbourne, a single lowly black feather boa was left on the rack among sequinned bowties and metallic tiaras. “Early this morning I had a lot of people come in and ask me for feather boas,” says Anna Nguyen, who works in the party department at Big W’s QV store. After maybe the third customer they said, ‘Yeah, Harry Styles.’ We had a few more delivered today, and they sold out within an hour.” Numerous actors and musicians have made the feather boa their own over the years, but in 2023 it belongs firmly to Styles, who wears his in homage to ’70s glam rocker Marc Bolan.
