Carbon challenge: Heat pump water heaters and my 'buy twice ... (The Australian Financial Review)

Heat pump water heaters, if they function properly, should be vastly more energy efficient than the current dominant water heater technologies.

That means my ability to take advantage of surplus energy from my solar PV system is far less than ideal. Naturally, when confronted with such a situation, my instinct was to gamble on the cheapest model I could get my hands on. Unfortunately, while Australia has a wide range of reputable, well-known electronics companies supplying air-conditioners, these companies are absent from the heat-pump water heater market. So, when buying a heat pump water heater, youโ€™re confronted by a bunch of brands youโ€™ve probably never heard of. This is because heat pumps employ compressors which extract and concentrate energy available from ambient air to heat water (believe it or not but air, even at cold winter temperatures, contains energy). I also happen to be the master of the buy twice technique.

How we've ruined suburbia: homes twice as big on blocks half the size (The Sydney Morning Herald)

I grew up in suburban Melbourne and Sydney in the 1960s. I was lucky. You could walk or cycle to schools and shops, lots of places to explore; ...

But the sustainability killer is the number of people living in the house. Where once one refrigerator in the kitchen was sufficient, now there are two or more refrigerators in the family room or garage to store booze, soft drinks, bait, fish and the like. Parked on the front driveway, the front lawn, the nature strip (weird term), cars are necessitated by the lack of public transport in the outer suburbs: no trams, no trains, and privatised bus services that are hopelessly inadequate. Children may have shared a bedroom and one bathroom in the past (I did). The sites are skinny to minimise the length along the street and sites so small that the houses are oriented to the boundaries, not the sun. The houses are so crowded on the sites that passive solar is not possible, and cross-ventilation breeds a loss of privacy, so air-conditioning is the norm.
