Live updates: Matildas take on Jamaica in final Cup of Nations ... (ABC News)

After wins over Czechia and Spain, Australia are aiming to claim a Cup of Nations clean sweep with their third and final match against the World Cup-bound ...

Both were extremely physical in individual challenges, and each defended in tight, compact rows that almost suffocated Sam Kerr out of the game. There are definitely some parallels between the two first-halves from Czechia and Jamaica here. AU against CZ broke that down in the 2nd half as CZ ran out of puff... A really slick passage from Jamaica as they zig-zag up the field with some easy two-touch passes. A gorgeous cross-field pass by Clare Hunt falls right into Kerr's path. Interesting 1st half; JAM have taken a leaf out of CZ's book methinks; marking up and matching AU physically. She got a big round of applause from the crowd. the difference here, I think, is that JAM can run all night and then some. By Samantha Lewis and be good to your father as well ;-)

Australia's game against Spain saw some familiar faces make their first appearances of the year, Caitilin Foord, Elise Kellond-Knight and Courtney Nevin all came off the bench in the victory. "It's been all the recovery strategies, you can imagine. One last game remains in the 2023 Cup of Nations, with Australia facing Jamaica on the final matchday.

Matildas ready to turn it on in Newy: Gustavsson (Newcastle Weekly)

Head coach Tony Gustavsson is promising the Matildas will “turn it on” when they run onto McDonald Jones Stadium in the 2023 Cup of Nations.

“We’ll need to focus on the first and last minute.” “Firstly, we need to ask ‘what are we about?’ and ‘what do we do when we do it well?’” Gustavsson said. “So, we’ll select the best possible starting 11 and the best possible finishing 11. “So, we’ll go with the best line-up we can.” “So, that fuels us to play the pressing game that we want to play – a high-octane attacking game. “The last time we were there, we had massive support and the atmosphere was incredible.

In the earlier Cup of Nations game in Newcastle on Wednesday, Spain defeated Czechia 3-0. The Cup of Nations was used by Gustavsson as a dress rehearsal for the Women's World Cup group stage, starting for Australia against Republic of Ireland on July 20. Van Egmond, used off the bench against Czechia and Spain, was deployed in the 73rd minute and Wheeler was give her first match minutes of the tournament when she was injected into the game in the 87th minute. The win over the Jamaica, five months out from Australia co-hosting the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup with New Zealand, was the Matildas' seventh in a row and came after a day of relentless rainfall in Newcastle.

WATCH: CommBank Matildas reigning Cup of Nations winners (Matildas)

The CommBank Matildas have tonight lifted the Cup of Nations trophy in Newcastle after overcoming a lively Jamaica side 3-0.

Mackenzie Arnold was forced into one last fine save in the 87th minute to keep her second clean sheet of the tournament. Alex Chidiac found the back of the net for only the second time in international football, smashing home a strike on her left foot after finding her way around the Jamaican defence. Foord almost had her second of the night in the 82nd minute. Much like the Czechia game, it was after the break that the CommBank Matildas did their best work. McKenna once again found herself in behind the defence, 1v1 with Mackenzie Arnold. Despite looking less than convincing, it was the CommBank Matildas who scored the opening goal.

As a practice run for the World Cup itself, it’s hard to be unhappy with three wins from three in the Cup of Nations, which would put them top of Group B if they can do it again five months from now. It wasn’t a brilliant first half against Czech Republic, it wasn’t a brilliant second half against Spain. Gustavsson made two changes at the break, swapping Clare Polkinghorne with Charli Grant and bringing on Chidiac for the ineffectual Larissa Crummer, who was played on the wing in place of Hayley Raso - and they seemed to have the desired effect. But the Matildas were otherwise dysfunctional, and would have conceded an equaliser were it not for the outstretched leg of Mackenzie Arnold, who denied a close-range attempt from Kayla McKenna in the dying embers of the opening half. “It wasn’t a brilliant game tonight. It was their seventh consecutive win and another clean sheet in Newcastle on Wednesday night, but coach Tony Gustavsson would have been hoping for a slightly more emphatic finish to their World Cup dress rehearsal, despite the eye-catching nature of Australia’s three goals.

"She deserves to start on her performance, but it might not be best for the team," Gustavsson cautioned. But the real cattle-prod came after the break with the introduction of Chidiac at the expense of Crummer. Gorry's opener in the 27th minute proved to settle the nerves, the midfielder receiving the ball from Foord as she dropped into a pocket and unleashed from 25 metres out past the powerless Becky Spencer. "The players stayed loyal to the plan that we had and grew into the game." Katrina Gorry got the first-half breakthrough for Tony Gustavsson's side in Newcastle before goals to Alex Chidiac and Caitlin Foord assured them of a seventh straight victory.

Matildas defeat Jamaica 3-0 to claim morale-boosting Cup of ... (The Guardian)

Goals from Foord, Gorry and Chidiac seal win in Newcastle as coach Tony Gustavsson praises team's belief.

It was Foord, then, who added to her never-ending highlight reel, playing a one-two with Kerr before unleashing a rasping drive which arced away from the despairing Spencer and in off the inside of the post. Her teammate’s final ball had been too late, and also too slow on a pitch which had copped 40mm of rain throughout the day. Gustavsson would have been well impressed with all of that, but he did not appear a manager impressed on the whole. Bunny Shaw was not there but Drew Spence was, and the recent Tottenham signing caught a glimpse of goal more than once in the early exchanges. If anything was off about Wednesday night it was Gustavsson’s experimental deployment of Courtney Nevin at right-back in place of Grant and Larissa Crummer on the wing for Hayley Raso, who broke her hand against Spain. Caitlin Foord did score a banger and Katrina Gorry a wonder, and substitute Alex Chidiac did hit the roof.

Five burning questions from the Matildas' Cup of Nations campaign (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Three games, three wins - and a pretty decent step forward by Tony Gustavsson's side in their Women's World Cup dress rehearsal. We take a look at what it ...

Gustavsson has been desperate to build depth in this position, and every World Cup team squad needs a bolter - Hunt will probably not only fill that quota for the Matildas but could even be starting in defence. She was even named player of the tournament, but the real prize she is after is a starting spot at the World Cup - and all the cards are falling in her favour. This was her first Matildas camp - although Gustavsson would have selected her earlier bar for an ill-timed injury - but she looked every bit an experienced international, to the point when both Gustavsson and Clare Polkinghorne, who knows a bit about what it takes to be a good centre-back, said they had never seen a more confident debut performance. Gustavsson has tried to use Fowler as a sort of shadow striker or a No.10 playing off Kerr, but now that Kerr and Foord are the favoured front two, she may have to be content with a role off the bench. She has also struggled for game time at Manchester City - and those issues may have cost her spot in the team. There’s quality in every position there and unsurprisingly, those players have been key to the Matildas’ upswing in form, as has
