It was the first time both clubs had met since a violent pitch invasion prematurely ended their first Derby of the summer. Three times, the Victory supporters chanted “you got smashed by a bucket”, in reference to the violent actions which left Glover with a cut on his face, but that was the worst of their Saturday night behaviour. The heavy presence of police at Saturday night’s A-League derby between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City ensured there was no repeat of the ugly scenes that marred their meeting in December. They roared when Victory raced to a 1-nil lead in the seventh minute, but were much more subdued when City responded later in the first half.

Fornaroli on target in Victory's ALM derby upset (Neos Kosmos)

Melbourne Victory have climbed off the bottom of the A-League Men ladder with a stunning 3-2 derby win over top side Melbourne City.

Victory’s active fans taunted Glover throughout the night with songs referencing the incident that left the goalkeeper with concussion and lacerations to the head in the previous encounter, when he was struck by a fan wielding a metal bucket. But they defended stoutly and Josh Brillante found the net in the 77th minute with a deflected shot from outside the box. But Fornaroli restored Victory’s advantage after the break and could have just about sealed the much-needed win with a close-range shot in a crowded penalty area.
