Vivienne Westwood Is Remembered in London (Vogue.com)

Helena Bonham-Carter, Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, Victoria Beckham, and others gather at Southwark Cathedral to pay tribute to the late Vivienne Westwood.

All the actresses on this red carpet haven’t eaten for weeks—and I have had a full-fat English breakfast.” Of wearing Westwood she said: “I feel like who I want to be. And her curls, in orange.” At the Kunsthistorisches he showed her his favorite Velázquez and then a Rubens—an image of which was on the tie he was wearing as he spoke to us from the pulpit. She has given me my armor to face the world for so many years.” She added: “Thank you for the cutting, the draping that makes your clothes so dynamic and alive, so much so that I wouldn’t be surprised to wake in the night and find them dancing in my closet, alive.” He added: “Back in the 1970s, affected by the horrors of the war in Vietnam, she became interested in the idea of chaos: a shout into the void, as a way of creating something that wasn’t there. Then followed a film created by Westwood’s brother, Gordon Swire, that mixed footage from the Derbyshire and Yorkshire dales and moors of her childhood with footage of the designer speaking. He said that although Westwood was “not a religious person,” her shock at learning while a child in Derbyshire the story of Jesus Christ had aroused in her a burning passion to battle injustice. Kronthaler closed by saying: “Vivienne brought us all together here today, and what she wanted more than anything was for each of us to do all we can to make the world a better place.” The first was from 1988, when he was a student of fashion in Vienna and she was his teacher and they began their relationship. As Westwood was looking at the painting, recalled Kronthaler: “I looked at her and realized that she was my darling girl and I would be with her forever.” The service began and ended with performances by Arnfield Brass, a brass band local to Westwood’s birthplace near Tintwistle, Derbyshire, that had played at her funeral there in January. As her granddaughter, Cora Corré, conceded in the last address of this afternoon’s event at Southwark Cathedral: “We can only really touch on the characteristics of the phenomenon that is Vivienne Westwood: a grandmother, a mother, a sister, a friend, a teacher, an artist, a designer—it will never be enough.” Another was from [Chrissie Hynde](https://www.vogue.com/article/chrissie-hynde-memoir-reckless), who, accompanied by a guitarist, delivered Buddy Holly’s “Raining in My Heart” low and pure.

Speaking in a filmed tribute months before her death, Westwood said activism was her priority, and fashion was her therapy: “I just liked doing it,” she said. Her clothes sometimes featured activist slogans, and despite participating with the fashion week calendar, she often urged her customers to buy less, not more. The actor said she had “an obscene amount of clothes, which Vivienne would not have liked with her ‘buy less’ manifesto”. Wearing a Westwood kilt suit, the designer and creative director of her company was visibly moved as he recalled their secret trysts in the late 80s. In a tribute delivered from the pulpit at Southwark Cathedral, the activist Joseph Corré praised his mother’s clothes, their relationship and her legacy.

Lastly, Cora Corré, Westwood’s granddaughter, in a sharp-shouldered Westwood blazer, explained how she worked closely with her grandmother to establish the Vivienne Foundation over the past few years, which Westwood wanted to set up to have a lasting legacy and impact. Helena Bonham Carter, wearing a tartan two-piece set and an oversize pearl-orb choker, confessed to having a “sinful” number of pieces by the designer (she even gave her daughter a Westwood orb necklace for her 15th birthday) and said she bought her first Westwood pirate shirt in the early ’80s.
