Former NRL star pulls out on the same day that NSW Greens unveiled policy to lower voting age to 16.

“The minister for education continues to insist the teacher shortage is a nationwide problem, but this data shows that NSW is recording the largest declines and the slowest recruitment across the nation,” Labor education spokesperson Prue Car said. “Twelve years of this government has created a surplus of top bureaucrats and a deficit of essential workers.” “However, I will continue to serve my community in the same way I have over the last decade, through the work of my foundation and other charities.” Campese’s announcement diverted attention from Labor’s attack on the government over the explosion in the number of senior government executives. Replicating that on 25 March would take Monaro out of the National party’s hands, but Labor now faces a rush to find another representative. But after weeks of media attention, including over a scandalous party and how he came to be selected as Labor’s candidate, Campese has now withdrawn.

Ex-NRL star turned hopeful MP Terry Campese quit his campaign on Friday to be the next Labor member for Monaro ahead of the March 25 NSW election.

However, I will continue to serve my community in the same way I have over the last decade, through the work of my foundation and other charities. Not because my heart isn’t in it but because I love this community too much to drag it through the media - whether they are truthful or not. Campese played 139 games for the Canberra raiders between 2004 to 2014, even representing Australia on one occasion in 2008. 'I am driven by working in and for the community and I want to take that commitment to the next level,' Campese said in a statement regarding his candidacy. 'I have been friends with Mr Hunter since school and remain so today. The complaint was linked to the official's alleged concerns around the activities of Campese, and claimed his behaviour was not acceptable for a potential representative for NSW Labor. 'Today I'm announcing that I will step down as Labor's candidate. In 2012, he founded the Terry Campese Foundation while sidelined with injuries during his NRL career, a charity that seeks to 'provide greater opportunities for marginalised young people in the community'. 'The Terry Campese Foundation applied to the Macquarie Correctional Centre to conduct a fundraising activity and the centre chose the Terry Campese Foundation as its 2022 charity partner.' Campese denied allegations he used charity resources to attend the prison and said he used his own car to drive to the fundraiser. 'However, I will continue to serve my community in the same way I have over the last decade, through the work of my foundation and other charities. The latest allegation to hit Campese was that he visited his school friend Adam Hunter, a convicted drug dealer, in prison to raise funds for his youth charity.

The 25 recruits raised a total of $330,680 for the Terry Campese Foundation's youth mentor program, Queanbeyan Sleepbus, Respite Care for QBN, and Cam's Cause.

My greatest hope is that someone will read my story and turn to someone in a cafe or in the next cubicle or across the breakfast table and say, "Did you hear about this?" I've had more people volunteer to be recruits than we've had space, and this year's group has raised a seriously outstanding amount that's going to make a huge difference. His foundation, in the meantime, continues to raise money for projects such as youth mentor program, which takes young people on a 20-week physical and mental program, culminating in a trek through the Northern Territory. Campese copped heat from the media for everything from being "scantily clad" at a party to not abandoning a mate jailed for drug dealing. This money is being used to improve the lives of youth and vulnerable people in our region.
