TV production is so big and involves so many cooks in the kitchen that a show that just doesn’t work to its core is rare, especially one that costs tens of millions of dollars. And I’m sad that such an original show will get thrown away in favor of the ruling god that is IP. In a depressing marker for the fickle world of streaming and the frequency of 1-2 season series, the show is currently the 4th oldest ongoing Prime Video TV series. Carnival Row never really took flight, but it’s pretty magical to see a show with wings. As I finished Season 2 of Carnival Row, I was overcome with the sense that this is a show that will be sacrificed to the Peak TV abyss. The creators built themselves a huge sandbox, but they don’t seem interested in playing with any of the toys they threw in. With all that being said, despite the many complaints I have for Carnival Row, I have a lot of respect for it. Season 2 features an especially egregious development when the show adds a Communist uprising to the mix and handles that ideology with the care of a chainsaw in a tornado. Carnival Row was always an imitation, always trying to be the next big creative endeavor, but lacking in the required creativity. But Carnival Row’s understanding of politics is extremely elementary, reminiscent of someone who vaguely remembers learning about the British Empire in high school and tries to develop on those fragments. But for those who love that genre, there’s a lot to love in Carnival Row. What once felt like just a representative cut of the world now feels like it’s potentially a sinkhole for the show to fall into. When that gets set against the expanse of Carnival Row season 2’s expanded world, it threatens to swallow Philo whole. Without the framework of a procedural, the seams of Carnival Row feel apparent. Following the season 1 finale’s annexation of the fae and faun creatures to the Row, tensions are flaring and everyone is itching for a fight. Without the backbone of a mystery, the first two episodes of season 2 feel a bit overstuffed and aimless as they set out to make a brave new world of Carnival Row. Jonah Breakspear (Arty Froushan) is acting chancellor of the Burgue, trying to hold onto power and working with Sophie Longerbane (Caroline Ford) to further their political agenda.

With so much going on, character development gets lost, and the story, often heavy-handed, is agonizingly slow at times and fascinating at others.

The series had all the ingredients to make for a captivating watch, digging even deeper into its world in season 2, but the lack of charisma, little engagement with its fantastical elements, and underwhelming character dynamics keep Carnival Row from being enjoyable. Crome is still a standout as Tourmaline, and her friendship with Ariyon Bakare’s Darius is one of the most genuine of the season. Season 2, like its predecessor, struggles to fully embrace the fantasy at the heart of its story, which bogs down its various arcs and stalls momentum, too entrenched in realism to truly soar. As a result, the ending is contrived, having failed to lay the groundwork and grow either relationship beyond the surface. The two should mesh seamlessly, but even the most interesting characters get shortchanged to cater to the plot, which is well-crafted but ultimately hollow precisely because of the lack of character focus. All told, however, Carnival Row season 2 consists of the same muted arcs, but it manages to at least bring its multiple subplots together to wrap things up.

At that moment, Tourmaline sees some boys getting scared of a door and she slowly approaches it. The Black Raven return to the Row which has been turned into a slum with most of the fae and fauns living on the streets. She is worried about him and the fighting and he says he is doing it for Darius, his werewolf friend. He on the other hand is worried about Vignette as the next supply raid could go wrong. Kaine the Black Raven tends to his mate, Oona who seems to be on the precipice of death.
