Nervous wait on 'crook' Warner as hero stranded, close call burns ... (Fox Sports)

Gritty half-centuries for Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb put Australia in a respectable position at stumps on day one of the second Test, but India's ...

Shami returned to knock over Nathan Lyon for 10 before Handscomb lost his patience on 67, charging down the wicket and chipping a regulation catch towards cover. Rahul held onto a superb one-handed grab at backward point to send Khawaja back to the sheds for 81, his highest Test score against India. The Delhi crowd erupted when Ashwin removed Steve Smith a couple of deliveries later for a second-ball duck, feathering an edge through to Bharat. Jadeja almost got another breakthrough the following over when umpire Michael Gough awarded an LBW dismissal against Khawaja, but Hawkeye once again came to the rescue, with the delivery pitching marginally outside leg stump. The Delhi wicket offered plenty of bounce and pace, with Warner and Mohammed Siraj embroiled in a fascinating battle early in the morning session. Shreya Iyer put down a tough chance at short leg in the 11th over, handing Khawaja an early reprieve on 14.

Why 'odd' team could be Australia's trump card (NEWS.com.au)

One and 10 in the first Test. Give him a chance to go out on his own terms. Australia’s spinners should be drooling at the prospect of this dusty deck slowly falling to pieces. We’ll wait and see how that all develops.” The Delhi deck is already welcoming spin and has variable bounce. Matthew Renshaw was axed for the second Test himself to accommodate the return of Travis Head and was unconvincing in the first Test against spin. If Australia loses the second Test and Warner misses out in the second innings, this series will be gone anyway and any decision about his future needs to be based on the Ashes and not India. Fifteen in this Test. “If you walk out there in the second innings and you get rock and rolled and we lose the Test match then all of a sudden the selectors start thinking, ‘we might have to start planning for the future a bit more,’” Border said on Fox. Not in Delhi they’re not. Test Godfather Allan Border admits selectors will have to discuss Warner’s future at the top of the order should he fail in the second innings and Australia lose the Test – but emphasised that the 36-year-old deserved a chance to “go out on his own terms.” Warner failed a fitness test in the morning and joins a long list of players unable to take the field.

Khawaja and Handscomb give Australia hope but India edge first day (The Guardian)

Australia's Border-Gavaskar trophy hopes are delicately poised after they fought their way to a modest first innings of 263 in the second Test against India ...

The miserly Victorian quick Scott Boland dropped out for Kuhnemann after playing an important role in Nagpur last week. The Victorian delivered one of his finest performances in a baggy green by thwarting India’s imposing attack. Sharma was given out off Nathan Lyon’s bowling in the final over, but the India captain successfully overturned the decision.

Khawaja and Handscomb fifties give Australia a chance (ESPNcricinfo.com)

India 21 for 0 (Rohit 13*, Rahul 4*) trail Australia 263 (Khawaja 82, Handscomb 72*, Shami 4-60, Ashwin 3-57, Jadeja 3-68) by 242 runs.

In the 46th over, he tapped Jadeja for a reverse-sweep for four, and smashed the next one. [Usman Khawaja](https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/usman-khawaja-215155)and [Peter Handscomb](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/peter-handscomb-334337)were the standout batters for Australia. When he went wider on the crease, the ball turned less than Cummins expected because of the angle, and trapped him lbw. With Pat Cummins, he added 59 for the seventh wicket. Travis Head, replacing Matt Renshaw, looked to attack, and although he looked most uncomfortable against Ashwin, it was Shami who took the wicket. That reverse-sweep almost became the push down the ground for a single. Handscomb stayed unbeaten on 72, adding 19 and 17 for the ninth and 10th wickets. An offbreak was perfect enough to turn past Labuschagne's inside edge but not enough to miss the stumps. They batted with similar urgency after winning the toss on a Delhi pitch where they played just one seamer, and managed to get to 263. Handscomb was more orthodox and assured, trusting his defence, waiting for the loose ball and, on occasion, creating back-foot shots. [R Ashwin](https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/ravichandran-ashwin-26421)looked the most threatening bowler, operating over two long spells for to pick up 3 for 57 in 21 overs, including the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith in the same over moments before lunch. [Nagpur had on day one](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/australia-in-india-2022-23-1348637/india-vs-australia-1st-test-1348652/full-scorecard)and also more bounce than is usual in Delhi, but batting looked easier as the day progressed.

Aussies denied as Rohit survives late scare (Wide World of Sports)

It looked as though Nathan Lyon had the breakthrough late on day one, when Rohit Sharma appeared to be caught.

It was ended by a Jadeja slider that struck the Aussie skipper in front. It brings debutant Matt Kuhnemann to the crease. But it's over now - the off-spinner bowled for 10 by Shami. And he's right. as does the finger! Sharma lunges forward to Nathan Lyon and the ball pops up to Marnus Labuschagne at bad-pad.

India reaches stumps on day one without the loss of a wicket in its first innings in Delhi, after Australia is dismissed for 263 in its opening knock.

The crowd rise as one and shriek their joy to the heavens. What a ball. Now Rohit cuts behind Lyon and gets a boundary! What a ball! Rahul is under pressure for runs, why not target him? Not sure what happened there, he may have slipped? "CATCH" is the call, as the ball beats those slips town towards third man, off the shoulder of the bat. Did it hit on the way out? Oh my word, what a start that would have been. Oh what happened there, Lyon got one to not bounce at all! By Simon Smale They run two, but that's a little win for the bowler.

Australia worked with spin right from the second over of India’s innings, with debutant Matthew Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon bowling six overs between them. Warner, who scored one and 10 in Nagpur in the first Test, was the first Aussie batter to go on Friday after taking 21 balls to score the first runs of his innings.

Live updates: India vs Australia second Test day two in Delhi (ABC News)

Australia is given a massive lift after Nathan Lyon claims four key Indian wickets — including captain Rohit Sharma — during the morning session in Delhi.

Good decision it looks, which is handy because Australia has no more reviews. Lyon didn't miss his mark by much, but didn't need to. Was going down leg, it looked like, and the umpire thought so too. Off the back foot, nicely played by Jadeja. There are two slips there, close together, but it just didn't carry actually, Smith diving to his right. Two leg byes, actually. I'm already wondering how many runs will win by, but my mates tell me to settle down. Any tips on how to not get carried away? You get to travel on tour as a fan for a 5 Test series following Australia. Do you go to England, India or the West Indies? Their tail did a lot of damage in the first test. By Simon Smale

India v Australia: second Test, day two – live (The Guardian)

Over-by-over report: Play continues on the second day at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Join our writers for updates from Delhi.

10th over: India 21-0 (Sharma 13, KL Rahul 4) Kuhnemann starts superbly, hitting a good line and length from around the wicket to Rohit, making the ball hold its line around middle-and-leg. 11th over: India 23-0 (Sharma 14, KL Rahul 5) Pat Cummins shares duties at the start of play, aiming for the top of off stump in a conventional manner. THE REVIEW IS LOST with the ball missing the stumps on height and line. Unfortunately for the Australian skipper he’s in Delhi, and the ball is doing nothing in the air or off the pitch on such a conventional line and length. And it’s another shocker with the ball missing the inside-edge by a long long way. After Lyon bowling right-arm offies from around the wicket, and Kuhnemann bowling left-arm orthodox from over, Murphy is bowling his right-arm off-spin from over the wicket. 16th over: India 45-0 (Sharma 25, KL Rahul 16) Nathan Lyon replaces Kuhnemann, bowling around the wicket to the two right handers, and immediately he gets much sharper turn. 29th over: India 70-4 (Kohli 12, Jadeja 1) Kohli and Jadeja rotate the strike comfortably in an unusually run-of-the-mill over. Handscomb, under the lid, reacts brilliantly, folding his body to cushion the blow and grasp the catch as the ball descended to the turf. 31st over: India 78-4 (Kohli 13, Jadeja 8) Kuhnemann is back for his third spell of the morning, replacing Murphy from the Delhi Gate end. 28th over: India 68-4 (Kohli 11, Jadeja 0) After Kohli rotates the strike Lyon pins down Jadeja. 32nd over: India 84-4 (Kohli 13, Jadeja 14) Jadeja doesn’t look set yet, but he digs in against Lyon and whips a couple into the leg-side when the bowler drops a fraction short.
