New Zealand v England: first Test – live (The Guardian)

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the first Test between New Zealand and England in Mount Maunganui. 7th over: England 41-1 (Duckett 24, Pope 10) Duckett continues his extremely impressive start, dismissing a Southee inswinger to the midwicket boundary. Duckett slugs a pull for four later in the over, his fifth boundary in only 24 balls on the first morning of a series. His career average is 28, which isn’t great but is comparable to all the other openers, and his Baz average is 27. It’s a horrible time to be young and queer in the UK at present, with the full force of the British establishment painting you as public enemy number one. A pull round the corner for a single brings up the fifty at exactly a run a ball. We may not be Bazworthy to quote Chris Lintott, but what a pleasure it is to watch Test cricket in the sunshine, especially after the week NZ (and other parts) has experienced.” To be honest, I’d forgotten this was the first Test cricket of the year. That brings up England’s hundred at more than a run a ball, and Duckett pulls the next ball to the fence to move to 76 from 58 balls. “Looking forward to (hoping for) the boos from the home crowd when Kuggeleijn gets tossed the ball,” wrote Paul Cockburn a few minutes before Kuggeleijn came into the attack. 16th over: England 106-1 (Duckett 76, Pope 20) Kuggeleijn drops a fraction short – if that – and Duckett slugs a pull through midwicket for four. 17th over: England 108-1 (Duckett 77, Pope 21) Mount Maunganui has a reputation for being flat and this is no exception.

England profit from attacking batting and Ben Stokes bold declaration against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui; number of players fall playing aggressive ...

Just 76.2 overs into this game and they are in a strong spot to make it 10 victories from 11. Jessop has never had as much airtime as he has over the past few months with Brook, Duckett, Crawley and Jonny Bairstow coming close to eclipsing his 121-year-old record. It's the hardest time to bat and we've got three of the best bowlers to ever play the game. It is because of the mindset he has imparted on his side that England are able to pound 325 inside 59 overs on day one of a Test. It may have come as a surprise to some but, in truth, it was just so Ben Stokes. When Stokes called his side in after just 58.2 overs at Mount Maunganui, he had just initiated the second-earliest first-innings declaration in Test history.

Harry Brook, Ben Duckett set England's tempo with rapid fifties (ESPNcricinfo.com)

And yet, the startling speed of Duckett's and Brook's innings were such that England had already posted more runs in two sessions than most teams would usually ...

If there is occasionally a sense that England are in danger of over-reaching themselves with this bold new attitude, it had been heightened one over prior to Root's dismissal, when Ollie Pope - quietly in control of his own tempo on 42 from 65 balls - was undone by arguably the first spell of sustained pressure that New Zealand managed all day. Instead, having posted a 36-ball fifty - the fastest by an England Test opener - he climbed through one too many drives and picked out Michael Bracewell in the covers to hand Tickner his maiden wicket. A remarkable 62 of Brook's runs came in boundaries - 14 fours, the majority scorched through point, and one towering six down the ground off Tim Southee as he turned on the style late in the session, with the floodlights beginning to kick in. And though both men endured some rough treatment, most particularly from Duckett in the first session and Brook in the second, they also chipped in with a maiden wicket apiece as England's attacking ambitions got the better of a succession of free-flowing batters. England by that stage had romped along to a typically freestyle 325 for 9, at a rate of 5.77 an over, and with arguably only Ollie Pope the victim of anything that could conventionally be described as old-school bowling "pressure". Ollie Robinson - already regarded by his team-mates as the equal of his seniors James Anderson and Stuart Broad - wasn't kept waiting long to live up to his heightened status.

'New peak for Bazball': Poms stun cricket again with Root's wild exit, day 1 declaration.

(England in 1939 declared 55.2 overs into a Test but it was in the era of 8-ball overs.) Southee, leading his country at home for the first time, put the tourists in to bat with the hope of exploiting the pink ball’s swing on a green-tinged pitch that had been covered for days because of Cyclone Gabrielle. He fell short, for now, of becoming just the second England batsman after Ken Barrington in the 1960s to hit centuries in four consecutive Tests.
