To even wonder about the answer is to miss that the only real conqueror in “Quantumania” is the MCU. Scott’s science-prodigy daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton), now a plucky young woman of 18, has built some sort of meta telescope in the basement. “Quantumania” is a state-of-the-art exercise in world-building, and in the neverending fantasy world (namely, ours) that was built by J.R.R. [Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania](https://variety.com/t/ant-man-and-the-wasp-quantumania/),” the “Ant-Man” series has gone Full Marvel. Tolkien and Dungeons & Dragons and “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter” and sandbox video games and Lego assembly kits that can number 10,000 pieces, it’s worth noting how axiomatic it is that when people today use the phrase “world-building,” they mean it as a high compliment. “Quantumania” is no cheat (it sucks you in, hooks your eyeballs, wrings you out), but if this is what Phase 5 looks like, God save us from Phases 6, 7 and 8. Yet since “Quantumania” claims to be a film about the manipulation of matter, we should probably ask: With everything going on in this movie, does any of it actually matter? The character is another comics stalwart, but given the pointedly cheeky way his scenes are staged, you might say that Reed has merged his sense of humor with a dash of Taika Waititi’s dada absurdism. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (2018) was a bit less small. In “Quantumania,” there are sci-fi “Alice in Wonderland” forests, full of manta-ray moths and tiny tentacled suns as well as characters who resemble giant stalks of broccoli, walking Jell-O sculptures and glowing TV consoles. (You could make a case that the George Lucas prequels represented the takeover of “Star Wars” by the Cantina.) The director, Peyton Reed, who had a background in human comedy (“Down with Love,” “Bring It On”), expanded the sequel into a puckish fantasy of scale, with characters and objects popping back and forth in size, though the result was still more amusing than momentous.

Cassie (Newton) is the heart of the film, Hank (Douglas) does the science and Janet (Pfeiffer) is the plot powerhouse whose worst nightmare catches up to her. The bigger, more general theme is the strength of the little guy, even in the face of overwhelming power. Quantumania sets up the future of the MCU, and also manages to pack in some other bigger themes. Still, the number of times characters refuse to divulge crucial information to string out the supposed suspense ("No time to explain!" If Quantumania doesn't quite know what to do with Ant-Man, it really doesn't know what to do with the other title character. Fans have been prepped for the arrival of Kang, who was first seen in the Disney Plus series Loki, and the movie does a fine job introducing the villainous characters to fresh viewers. It's a breezy, bizarro sci-fi adventure in the mold of Thor: Ragnarok, as familiar faces from the Marvel roster drop into an alien realm for fun and fighting before inspiring the locals to rise up and overthrow a hateful dictator. Old enemies come looking for her and her fam, forcing her to face up to what she did during exile. The weirdness of the micro-Mad Max setting gives rise to some entertaining jokes, arresting visuals and one or two mind-bending set pieces. Having rescued Janet van Dyne from the quantum realm in the previous Ant-Man and the Wasp film (and you'd be forgiven for remembering basically nothing about that movie), the Ant-gang is sucked back into the itty-bitty universe layered below the atoms of our full-size world. Kathryn Newton plays the now-teenaged Cassie Lang, Scott's daughter, and in the quantum realm they encounter William Jackson Harper, Katy O'Brian and Bill Murray (yes, that Bill Murray). The ultimate verdict in all this though belongs to the fans, and the big question is just how they will embrace all that Feige and team have in store as we move into this new phase of the MCU. The visual effects team earns their money, no doubt, but as noted really seem more inspired by George Lucas’ world than Marvel’s in terms of all the new merchandisable creatures created for this Quantum leap in the series. We meet Hope back on Earth in San Francisco, and also there is Scott Lang ( [Paul Rudd](https://deadline.com/tag/paul-rudd/) in happy-go-lucky mode) now strutting down the streets to the tune of John Sebastian’s catch Kotter theme “Welcome Back.” It is five years past his world-saving efforts as an Avenger with no discernible superpower other than shrinking down and communicating with ants; he has written a bestselling book, and seems content to be a family man with teenage daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton) and domestic bliss with Hope as well as her parents Janet and Hank Pym ( [Michael Douglas](https://deadline.com/tag/michael-douglas/)), the latter of whom has turned over the day-to-day operations of the Pym Foundation to Hope. Rudd is a delight to welcome back in his signature role, as is Lilly. Of course, as in any Marvel movie the crux of it all eventually is the action and battles for world supremacy, and that is what our heroes must deal with on two different trajectories as Scott and Cassie are separated from Janet, Hank and Hope – and ultimately their alter egos — when they buzz in to save the day. Also there to guide the newcomers to the state of this union are the freedom fighters led by Jentorra (Katy O’Brian) and Quaz (William Jackson Harper).

The tiniest Marvel superhero returns to set up the next big phase and supervillain — and suggests the MCU is still in a serious existential crisis.

“You’re inside Schrödinger’s box,” he’s told, “and you’re the cat.” Long story short, he encounters millions of other Ant-Men from every possible timeline, which allows him to scale a virtual tower of Scotts to get closer to the prize. The pile-up of previously-in-the-MCU incidents you need to know to get what’s happening is only outpaced by the sheer amount of scaffolding this threequel is tasked with assembling for future endeavors. The veteran cast members do what they do gamely enough — Rudd’s gonna Rudd, and Pfeiffer is given enough screen time and shouldering of the storytelling that she’s effectively a co-lead. There is the reliance on digital-effects-heavy backgrounds (no less than a dozen VFX houses get namechecked in the credits) that try to mix and match various bits of sci-fi imagery, and leave you feeling like you’re poring through a bottomless rummage sale of generic pulp-paperback covers and genre clichés. Our man in the helmet has to enter a “probability storm,” however, to get it. With Kang, he adds in a layer of something like pity — for himself (his backstory suggests he wasn’t exactly marooned in the QR) and for these humans who, supersuits or not, are no match for him. The fact that this all becomes the backdrop for what’s eventually a stock rebellion story, which rides on the back of Lang & Co. Something or someone sends a signal back, which sucks them, Scott, Hope and Janet ( [Michelle Pfeiffer](https://www.rollingstone.com/t/michelle-pfeiffer/)) deep into that netherworld of sub-molecular flotsam and jetsam. Majors has long used a bruised baritone to give his ordinary and his extraordinary people roles (The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Da 5 Bloods, The Harder They Fall, the upcoming Magazine Dreams) a sense of wariness, weariness, and vulnerability.
