Magnificent Jalen Hurts goes down swinging in Eagles' Super Bowl ... (The Guardian)

The 24-year-old quarterback made a single, costly error against the Kansas City Chiefs but was otherwise superb in defeat for Philadelphia.

Instead, they are clobbering the refs for citing Eagles cornerback James Bradberry [for holding the Chiefs’ JuJu Smith-Schuster](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/feb/12/james-bradberry-holding-call-eagles-chiefs-referees-super-bowl), a penalty that could have gone either way on a night where the few big calls in the game were dubious. [Philly fans suffering a cable TV outage](https://6abc.com/super-bowl-2023-comcast-outage-philadelphia-eagles-fishtown-kensington-kansas-city-chiefs/12805406/) after they had lined up in front of local bars that morning to sit vigil over the game, you’d think that Hurts would be the first person that they would tear into for ruining their night. In a moment that he could have easily backed down from, Hurts didn’t just keep swinging; he kept landing blows. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said it was Hurts’s best game in the two years they have been together, adding “he was in complete control.” Mahomes himself [called Hurts’s performance outstanding](https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2023-super-bowl-patrick-mahomes-amazed-by-jalen-hurts-historic-performance-in-super-bowl-loss/). Until this game only Tom Brady and Mahomes were celebrated as the cool kids at a Super Bowl, the young QBs who were born to shine on the big stage. Hurts also ran in the two-point conversion that tied the game at 35-35 in the fourth quarter, before Mahomes worked his magic to lead the Chiefs to victory. But Hurts didn’t just prove that he deserves to be in their company. In the end Kansas City were simply the more resilient team thanks to [their Michael Jordan in cleats](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2023/feb/13/patrick-mahomes-super-bowl-mvp-injury), Patrick Mahomes. As Hurts staggered to his right to avoid incoming Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton, the ball slipped out and tumbled backward on to the turf.

Jalen Hurts delivers one of the greatest performances in a Super ... (The Washington Post)

Jalen Hurts rushed for 70 yards and three touchdowns (both Super Bowl records for a quarterback) in the Eagles' 38-35 loss to the Chiefs.

The wide receiver’s performance was especially impressive considering it came less than seven weeks after he broke his right fibula and tore a ligament in his ankle. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Thomas broke a couple of attempted tackles en route to the end zone on a 31-yard touchdown run that gave Buffalo a 19-17 lead. Even whenever we got all the momentum in that game, and we went up eight points in the fourth quarter, for him to respond and move his team down the football field and run it in himself for the two-point conversion, it was a special performance by him, and you make sure you appreciate that when you look back on this game.” Foles was terrific, completing 28 of 43 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns to capture MVP honors in the Eagles’ 41-33 win over the New England Patriots, and he needed to be, because his counterpart was excellent in defeat. “I didn’t think a member of the losing team — especially a member of the defensive team — would get the award. “The way he stepped up on this stage and ran, threw the ball, whatever it took for his team to win, that was a special performance and I don’t want it to get lost in the loss that they had. Fitzgerald had seven catches for 127 yards and two scores, including a 64-yard touchdown. The Hall of Famer finished with 135 yards rushing on 15 carries and caught five passes for 55 yards. Howley remains the only player from the losing team to be named Super Bowl MVP. “Losing sucks,” Brady said after his third Super Bowl loss. Brady threw for a Super Bowl record 505 yards and three second-half touchdowns, but he lost a fumble late in the fourth quarter with New England trailing by five. Denver Broncos running back great Terrell Davis is the only other player to rush for three touchdowns in a Super Bowl.

Because the Hurts gamble paid off in a big way, the Eagles might reward that. And to have the courage to continue to prove your worth and show people how good you are and improve while not telling people to go f--- themselves. Teammates and coaches lauded his expertise in the run-pass option attack, and the Chiefs spent significant time in their Super Bowl preparation trying to account for it. "I feel like [before] he would wait to see what the defense is going to do and then make his decision," Goedert said. The Eagles were considered the league's deepest team in 2022, an amalgam of elite line play, veterans making the best of second acts and an infusion of high-end skill players. Early in the week, Hurts and Goedert had discussed the same scenario Minnesota's defense would show them on the field -- safety rolling to Goedert, the corner cheating up, leaving Mahomes, at age 27, made his third appearance in the game Sunday and won his second title. Others viewed Hurts more favorably, as a modern NFL quarterback with all the tools, someone who belongs in the club of quarterbacks making $40 million a year.

You decide if you want to use that to be a teachable moment and I know what I'll do." I mean, even when we had all the momentum in that game and we went up eight points in the fourth quarter, for him to respond and move his team right down the football field and run it in himself for the 2-point conversion, it was a special performance by him, man and you make sure you appreciate that when you look back on this game." "I mean the way he stepped on this stage and ran, threw the ball, whatever it took for his team to win, I mean, that was a special performance that I don't want it to get lost in the loss that they had. "Man I think you want to cherish these moments. He also joined Colin Kaepernick and Joe Montana as the only quarterbacks to both rush for at least 50 yards with 300 passing yards in the big game. I will say I'm so proud of this team for everything that we've been able to overcome. You want to cherish these moments with the people that you've come so far with. He finished the game having completed 27 of 38 passes for 304 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. He rushed 15 times for 70 yards and scored three more times on the ground. He set multiple Super Bowl quarterback rushing records and threw for more than 300 yards as he led the Philadelphia offense to 35 points, with 24 coming directly from him. "It's something that I know will motivate me." It did hurt us.
