LIVE: Massive Aussie shock as Head axed; 22yo debutant picked in ... (Fox Sports)

Todd Murphy will make his Test debut on Thursday while Travis Head has been sensationally dropped as Australia begin its four-Test tour of India in Nagpur ...

Lyon has played 24 Tests in Asia for 118 wickets at an average of 32.28. I think spin makes him play every single ball and brings in (multiple dismissal options). Nathan Lyon has had particular success against Kohli, picking up his wicket four times at an average of 23.25. He’s reportedly told teammates he will go rightie in the Test – likely when coming up against India’s two left-arm orthodox spinners in Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. He has three half-centuries with a top score of 71. It's worth mentioning, since he’s been spotted in the nets batting right-handed. Usman Khawaja (1) was dismissed LBW in the second over by an inswinger from Mohammed Siraj. It’s another challenge and makes touring over here even harder when you know the conditions are custom-made for them.” It appears to be a clear ploy to give bowlers an advantage against left-handed batters – with five of Australia’s top seven lefties, compared to just one Indian batter. “That’s part of the challenge of playing away. “Embracing the chaos. India v Australia: first Test, day one – live (The Guardian)

13th over: Australia 29-2 (Smith 6, Labuschagne 14) Siraj gets a spell and Shami returns. Australians will recall the veteran India quick from the 2015 ...

“Sky” has become a people’s hero with his six-hitting in the white ball formats and after 79 first-class matches he will finally gets to pull on the Test shirt for India at the ripe old age of 32. That was a big toss to win and Pat Cummins’ run of luck with the coin has continued. There was much talk in the lead up to this series about Head’s disappointing record on the subcontinent and his plan to combat it with the all-out aggression so successful in the home summer. 3rd over: Australia 6-2 (Smith 0, Labuschagne 0) Even two wickets down after three overs, the names Smith and Labuschagne inspire confidence. His first ball of the series is wide and skids low. He pulls his head in on the last and lets it drop at his feet. He wants more of a look at the leftie and a single is sufficient from this 10th over. However Smith swipes at the fifth ball and pulls it just short of a fielder. 15th over: Australia 33-2 (Smith 6, Labuschagne 19) Shami returns and so does the Australian stalemate. 18th over: Australia 44-2 (Smith 10, Labuschagne 24) Here comes Patel, a slower action to Jadeja but all the venom comes from that final flick of the wrists. 11th over: Australia 27-2 (Smith 6, Labuschagne 14) Siraj steams in for a fifth over, this one to Labuschagne who has now faced twice as many balls as Smith. Australia have broken the deadlock now and the pace is quickening.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das are the only other pair to account for more than 10% of their team’s runs. No other pair has proved as prolific for their team in Tests in recent times than this one. All through this partnership, Smith and Labuschagne have been spectacularly decisive.

Ind vs Aus 1st Test: Jadeja takes 4 as India reduce Aus to 174/8 at Tea (Business Standard)

Earlier, Mohammed Shami (1/12) and Mohammed Siraj (1/13) removed Usman Khawaja (1) and David Warner (1) in quick succession but Labuschagne (47) and Smith (19) led the Australian fight back in an engaging first session where they didn't let India's spin troika get better of them. Earlier, pacers Mohammed Shami (1/12) and Mohammed Siraj (1/13) dealt early blows to the visitors, removing openers Usman Khwaja (1) and David Warner (1) within the first three overs. All the pre-match talk by a section of Australian media about doctored pitches seemed presumptuous as the VCA Stadium track seemed like a typical dry Indian wicket, which will gradually offer significant turn from second day onwards. [ Business Standard App ](/app) for latest [Business News](/) and [ Market News ](/markets). In case of Warner, Shami came around the wicket and fired from wide of the crease and the angular delivery sent the left-hander's off-stump for a cartwheel. There is turn on offer but that is standard for Indian wickets and the manner in which Smith and Labuschagne played showed that good technique is key to adaptability in any conditions.

IND vs AUS: Jadeja leaves visitors in tatters, Rohit scores dominant ... (The New Indian Express)

Coming back to the international fold after a five-month layoff, the southpaw returned with a fifer to bowl Australia out for 177.

Ashwin, though, had topped him with 29 in 2013 but it came down to 21 in the next series four years later. Above all, the visitors seemed to have prepared well ahead of the series as they flew in an R Ashwin impersonator to the nets during their short camp in Alur, Bengaluru ahead of the series. Agreed, their side is packed with left-handers (total five, four in top eight) and the strip was apparently designed to trouble them. As he said on the eve of the match, he had no hesitation in batting first on a surface where batting in the fourth innings is expected to be extremely difficult. To begin with, all talk surrounding the VCA Stadium pitch in Jamtha, Nagpur gave way to hope as the day started on a positive note for the Aussies. It will be too early to draw a conclusion with the four-match Test series just a day old.

IND vs AUS 1st Test, Day 1: Ravindra Jadeja casts a spell on the ... (Hindustan Times)

Back after a five-month injury break, the left-arm spinner takes 5/47 to help India bowl Australia out for 177 | Cricket.

The pressure was always on and in the end, it told a story of its very own. Jadeja, the hero of the day, felt the wicket was ‘slow and low’. It's just that the visitors don't have a Jadeja to help them along. A series of flighted balls followed by one that came in with the angle. The allrounder has 177 home wickets at an average of 20.34 and he once again gave us a reminder of why he is so good. The batter, on 49, was tempted and pulled out of his crease and the razor-sharp stumping was completed by debutant KS Bharat. “All the balls were not turning and the bounce was low. Australia were down to 2/2 and in trouble. Jadeja was one of the bowlers Australia feared would benefit from the unrolled patch outside the left-hander's off-stump. On Day 1, the Australian innings lasted a little over two sessions and more than half the deliveries that the visitors faced were dealt with by Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith. And while we appreciate those gifts, the core of his genius sometimes gets a little lost in the mad hustle that is white-ball cricket. The longer format has a way of peeling away the layers and revealing your true character.

Jadeja nearly stumped Handscomb with a ripping spin delivery that went past the bat in one over, but Handscomb was able to escape both times. In the 23rd over, Todd Murphy provided Australia with a breakthrough as he broke the partnership of 76 runs in 138 balls between Rohit and Rahul.
