Mrs Rinehart has been paying out bonuses worth many tens of thousands of dollars a year on top of some of the highest wages in Australia to Roy Hill workers in the countdown to Christmas since 2018. They will be in addition to what is known as the “chairman’s profit scheme” for Roy Hill workers and other sweeteners spread across the year for the Hancock workforce.

The 41 cash prizes represent each of the 41 years she has worked at Hancock Prospecting, which she now controls in her role as executive chairperson. Rinehart is the daughter of iron-ore explorer Lang Hancock, who died in 1992. With around 4000 workers in the company, which operates in mining, energy and agriculture, each employee has a one per cent chance of coming up trumps.
