Putting aside a horrendous shooting night on the first half of Washington’s back-to-back, Avdija has logged career highs in points twice since Rui Hachimura was traded to the Lakers on Jan. Thomas’ five assists on Saturday were a supplement to his case for a starting role after he developed a reputation for being a one-dimensional, ball-dominant guard who wore the leather out looking for his own shot. Thomas hasn’t earned his ticket off the bench yet, but a few repeat performances of what he did on Sunday may leave the Nets without a choice. [infamous eyeroll](https://deadspin.com/steve-nash-was-a-lame-duck-head-coach-from-the-start-in-1849165518) at the mere mention of Nash’s comments pertaining to him looking for teammates during a summer league postgame interview was the canary in the coal mine. Thomas has felt underutilized on the Nets in the past, going so far as to change his Instagram bio to #FreeCT after Steve Nash was canned in early November. [Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes](https://twitter.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1622250871571779585) reported Sunday morning that that the Nets will sideline Irving indefinitely as they scrape the bottom of the barrel for suitors who can provide pennies on the dollar for Irving by the Feb.

Coming off a 44-point outing on Saturday, Brooklyn Nets point guard Cam Thomas continued his stellar play with another jaw-dropping performance in Monday's.

He has his two highest scoring nights in consecutive games after scoring 44 against the Wizards. Thomas lit it up once again, pouring in 47 points on 15-of-29 shooting as the Nets fell to the Clippers 124-116 in front of their home fans at the Barclays Center. He's getting to the paint with ease and lighting it up from downtown.

Thomas has 36 points in 28 minutes.

Thomas and Claxton both missed shots in the final minute that would have closed the gap. - Cam Thomas became the fourth player age 21 or younger with more than 90 points in a 2-game span in NBA history. After a number of futile tries, the Nets tied the game at 99 in the middle of the quarter, helped by five quick points from Thomas. Brooklyn was hit by injuries and a general lack of personnel in facing the Clippers led by healthy all-Everything wings Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Then, in the fourth quarter, things got interesting but in the end, it was the Clippers poise that won out. Thomas has now scored 91 points in the Nets last two games, having crushed the Wizards two nights ago with a 44-point performance. Obviously, I want to play in the real games. In doing so, Thomas became the second youngest player in NBA history to score back-to-back 40-point games.

Monday’s game tipped off a little more than an hour after the trade of Kyrie Irving became official and the 7-11 era finally came to an end in Kings County. He was still able to manipulate the defense and score, and I think he can he can be even better. Simmons missed his fourth consecutive game due to left knee soreness, but Vaughn had said before the game that he could have played on Monda. Thomas put up five quick points to even the game at 99 with 7:55 left on the clock and a driving dunk by Claxton put the Nets in front. “kudos to the guys who are believing in me, letting me make decisions down the stretch,” Thomas said. Thomas and Claxton both missed shots in the final minute that would have closed the gap. Thomas finished the game with 47 points after putting up 44 on Saturday against the Washington Wizards. So the sky’s the limit for him for Cam.” So the optimism and belief that we can win a basketball game with the group that we have was good to see. Back-to-back threes from Joe Harris and Edmond Sumner gave the Nets a 107-99 advantage, but the Clippers charged back as Kawhi Leonard and Reggie Jackson hit back-to-back shots to pull LA within three. However, the Nets turned the ball over 16 times for 25 points. It was Thomas that did his best Kyrie Irving impression now that the NBA star is no longer a member of the franchise as the undermanned Nets went toe-to-toe with the Paul George, Kawhi Leonard-led Clippers.

And being the youngest player in history to do it is downright incredible. The previous youngest was Allen Iverson during a run of five straight 40-point games in April 1997. Scoring 40 points in an NBA game, period, is impressive. Obviously, the incoming Spencer Dinwiddie will eat into some of those minutes.

Thomas’ finger roll left Brooklyn down 112-109 with 11 seconds left, and after fouling Booker, watched the Suns star shockingly miss both free throws. Cam Thomas scored 43 points in Tuesday's 116-112 loss to the Phoenix Suns. Here are your Nets player grades for Tuesday's loss.

Warren did a great job of scoring the basketball in this one. He was hitting plenty of shots from his patented mid-range spots on the floor, getting to the charity stripe, and he even hit the only three he took in this game. did not do much of anything in this one aside from getting a couple of buckets during his limited time on the floor. Unfortunately, his defense was not where it needed to be in order for him to play more in this contest. did not play much in the second half. Harris did not get much done in this game as he mostly struggled with shooting the ball. He did a great job of finishing at the rim and was efficient with his shots as usual. He had trouble shooting the ball all night long and he struggled keeping the ball in front of him or guarding without fouling. However, he did a decent job of getting on the boards and he made some nice passes to set up his teammates for easy buckets like he usually does. However, Thomas’ shooting fell off a cliff in the second half as he couldn’t buy a bucket. In the first half, Brooklyn and Phoenix played to a standstill until the final minutes of the half. In the second half, the Nets fought until the very end, but were unable to make any dents in terms of gaining a lead.

It’s hard to feel too happy about close losses to the Clippers and Suns on consecutive nights, particularly because both games were in reach. That until the Suns took a 96-83 lead early in the fourth quarter. So we increase the tempo, we start pressing a little bit, speeding them up, and then we were attacking the basket.” There were a few junctures at which the Nets could have, on the second night of a back-to-back, wilted and died. TJ Warren, who finished with 17 points in his most effective minutes in some time, and Dru Smith (yep) provided enough of a boost to rip off a 10-0 run, cutting the seemingly insurmountable lead to 96-93. Phoenix ended the half on a 9-0 run, and took a six-point lead into the half. “He has the ability to get to the rim and force you to foul him because he’s strong. Well, the now-potentially budding superstar became the youngest player in NBA history to score 40 points in three straight games, getting to 43 of ‘em. He has ability to make moves off the bounce and get you to react to him.” Vaughn also applauded Thomas “shooting more threes, which we talked about.” The only question was whether the ever-undermanned Nets could put up a legitimate fight for the second-straight night against a Western Conference contender that, uncharacteristically, had their centerpieces healthy and ready to go.

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas drives against Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker (1) during the first half of an NBA basketball game, Tuesday, Feb.

“It’s real hard because just being a competitor, you want to be in the game. In his first 34 games of the year, Thomas averaged 14.1 minutes and just 7.4 points along with 17 DNPs. When we get our full roster together, we’ll put the pieces together and see where he fits in that in that rotation.” Thomas’ breakout stretch since Kyrie Irving requested a trade from the Nets and subsequently was traded Sunday has been eye-opening for the Nets. His 43-point effort wasn’t enough to will the Nets to a win, even as he put up 13 points in the closing 1:30 of the game to give Brooklyn hope for a last-second comeback. You know, I’m just glad to have my name in history books being this young,” Thomas said. And Thomas was near perfect from the free throw line going 18-for-20. You want to play,” Thomas said.
