And this album to me, the Lemonade album, was just so monumental." Adele looked almost as unhappy as Twitter was about her victory, saying onstage: "I can't possibly accept this award … In his speech, the British musician downplayed the importance of the prize. [Harry Styles](https://www.theguardian.com/music/harry-styles)’s Harry’s House beating Renaissance to album of the year doesn’t feel the same as Beck’s Morning Phase triumphing over [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/dec/13/beyonce-album-first-review) in 2015, nor does it feel the same as if, say, Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres had won this year. [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/beyonce) has only ever won one of them once – song of the year in 2010 for Single Ladies – which seems a fairly inexplicable state of affairs: you don’t need to be a rabid member of the Bey Hive to know that she’s had an immense cultural and commercial impact over the last 20 years. Under the circumstances, Samara Joy – a hugely gifted jazz vocalist, gradually emerging as a significant songwriter as well as an adept interpreter of standards – feels like a worthwhile choice: rooted in tradition, but too soulful to qualify as easy listening. The weirdest success was Bonnie Raitt’s [Just Like That](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skd0XR3twCA) winning song of the year, at least from the perspective of the UK, where the album it’s from didn’t even make the charts. Certainly they’re one of the biggest-selling groups in a field where several of the nominees didn’t even seem particularly new: Molly Tuttle’s first album came out in 2006; Tobe Nwigwe’s first EP six years ago; Muni Long is 34 and released her debut album, albeit under her real name, Priscilla Renea, in 2009. Without wishing to cast shade on those doughtily toiling away in the areas covered by the best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media and best new age ambient or chant album categories, the Grammys are ultimately about four awards: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.

When [Adele](https://www.newyorker.com/tag/adele) won Album of the Year over Beyoncé, in 2017, there was such a sense of cosmic injustice that Adele herself could not bear the result. Like Adele, Lizzo was compelled to use the end of her stage time to state the obvious: “Thank you so much,” she told Beyoncé. Bad Bunny—who won in the Música Urbana Album category but was otherwise snubbed, despite his global dominance—kicked off the show with an electrifying tribute to historical Latin genres, offering up a maximalist version of his merengue-minded single, “Después de la Playa.” It was such a dynamic performance that This was the overt story line of the evening, but the louder subtext was the question of whether the Recording Academy was finally prepared to give Beyoncé the major awards. When the performance wrapped, the cameras found Jay-Z, who was shooting a finger gun in ecstatic celebration. It was the sort of thing that could have come off like a PowerPoint presentation. [Trevor Noah](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/on-television/how-the-daily-show-squandered-the-opportunity-that-was-trevor-noah), worked overtime this year to remind the audience of the Grammys’ respect for her towering greatness, and the historic nature of the evening. But then, as my kids got older and started seeing the internet themselves, that's the difficult part. But this isn't the first time that Affleck has attracted attention for his downcast expressions. But then my kids see it and I think, 'Oh, are they going to think their dad is fundamentally sad or they have to worry about me?' That's really tough." Adele did not seem too happy about the winner of the night's top award at yesterday's Grammys, with her reaction caught on camera.
Had any of those three artists won, they would’ve been the first Black female Album of the Year winner since Lauryn Hill in 1999. This is the fourth time Beyonce has been nominated for – and lost – the Album of the Year award at the Grammys. “What the f**k does she have to do to win album of the year? Among those also nominated in Styles’ category were openly gay singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, Peurto Rican singer Bad Bunny – whose Un Verano Sin Ti was the first Spanish-language album up for Album of the Year – and Lizzo, Mary J. “My artist of my life is Beyonce, and the Lemonade album is so monumental,” she said as she accepted the award. Some might consider Adele’s immediate reaction sour grapes, given her album 30 was nominated in the same category.

The last Black person to win the award was Jon Batiste, last year for his album “We Are.” The entire membership is allowed to vote in the big four categories — best new artist, record, song and album of the year. Most significantly, Beyoncé has lost album of the year four times to Taylor Swift, Beck, Adele and now Styles. According to Billboard, the Recording Academy boasts more than 12,000 voting members. NEW YORK -- A night in music brimming with shocking upsets, historic wins, tributes for artists like the late rapper Takeoff and hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, the 65th Grammys were back in full swing Sunday. Others, however, see the remark as an example of white privilege.

For ten minutes at this week's GRAMMYs, hip hop and some of its most vital icons, got the respect they deserve. And [her] album to me, the Lemonade album, is just so monumental." The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill won the award in 1999, and Outkast's Speakerboxx/The Love Below scored it in 2004. In case anyone didn't realise we were well into the 2000s by this stage, the smooth bounce of Nelly's 'Hot In Herre' makes it clear. This year they introduced the Dr. How have none of them won? Too $hort delivers his crunk anthem 'Blow The Whistle' and before we know it we're in the current day with Lil Baby's 'Freestyle' and GloRilla's viral smash 'F.F. Run-DMC's 'King Of Rock' sounds enormous, and LL Cool J is as slick and confident as ever as he runs through 'I Can't Live Without My Radio' and 'Rock the Bells'. For years, critics say the genre's importance has been grossly underestimated at the GRAMMYs. It's been a long time. One after one, legendary rappers, singers, DJs, and dancers delivered performances that were short in length but massive in energy. Hopefully it doesn't overshadow the awards night's best moment though.
The Brooklyn rapper brought down the house during the Grammy Awards' 50th anniversary of hip-hop celebration.
It’s unbelievable to me that I got to be in the middle of that. We wanted the audience to have the full opportunity to experience the flawlessness of the skill set on display. By the time “Hands” was done, I was levitating. I didn’t rehearse for my verses specifically; it was more for the flow of the sequence of the medley and to finesse the stop-and-go points. The verse was flawless. To have a direct impact on the world with my little contribution — this was a milestone moment of culture. I’m backstage, able to have hours of time with them in the same space just to hang out, to laugh, to go through memories, to ask questions I never got to ask. I’ve done that “Look at Me Now” verse so many times in the last 10 years — that was the practice. I just wanted to explode. It was one of the evening’s most memorable moments, in a performance that just about did the impossible — showcased a whole genre from its birth to the present. There are very few moments in life when you wake up the next day, and you realize your reality wasn’t just a dream, that it was a real space, real people, real emotions. But it was a 50-year-old, Brooklyn’s Busta Rhymes, who stole the show.
The 65th Grammy awards celebrated hip hop. But the Grammys has zero credibility in the hip hop community after spending the majority of the past 50 years ...
Nas, who released the classic album Illmatic in 1994, didn't get his first and only Grammy until 2021 – for King's Disease. The most streamed artist in Spotify's history, Drake, who amassed 50 billion streams on the platform by mid-October 2022, has won five Grammys including one in 2023 as a featured artist and writer. But when you look at the big awards for the Grammys such as Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year, hip hop comes up short – despite its incredible impact. Jazzy Jeff won the first rap Grammy for Parents Just Don't Understand. But why is it that the majority of these wins are for projects associated with Eminem? Hip hop will turn 50 this year and at the 65th Grammy awards, this was celebrated. The Grammys, apparently, just didn't understand how odd that was. Could it be that it's easier for Grammy voters to recognise talent when it's bottled up to look like them? But the Grammys rarely get it right. The Grammys are getting better at recognising talent – Kendrick Lamar has had 17 wins. The others have zero. To put things in perspective, Macklemore has more Grammys than Tupac Shakur, the Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, DMX, Foxy Brown and the Wu-Tang Clan combined.
The pop star said 'this doesn't happen to people like me very often' while accepting an award that has been won by a white male more than 30 times.
Instead, they would be decided by their voting members - of which they have thousands. If Beyonce had won, she would have been the first black woman to receive the award since 1999. Nominations and winners would no longer be decided by an anonymous committee. Credit: Instagram/@Badbunnypr "Harry styles said “this doesn’t happen to people like me very often” and I gotta be honest I can’t think of a type of people this happens for more," said one person. It seemed to be a genuine surprise for Styles, who opened his speech with the words, "well, shit," with much of the speculation tipping Beyonce to take out the top award for Renaissance.

'So, unfortunately the world didn't get to see the beautiful work of Yoann Bourgeois or all of our dancers work and Harry's beautiful f***ing job, but he won Album of the Year, which is incredible, and we all have a story to tell. 'And Harry did such a good job like integrating into it and had this beautiful duet and all this stuff and this whole time we're practicing with the turntable counterclockwise. Mathis also praised Yoann Bourgeois, adding, 'To spend a week immersed in your brilliant mind is nothing short of amazing. It was still such a f***ing incredible experience. and Harry did such a good job integrating into it and had a beautiful duet and just making this incredible, morphing, cool artistic s**t,' Da Rocha began. Harry Styles's dancer Brandon Mathis revealed that the Grammys stage was spinning in the opposite direction during their performance of “As It Was.”
“The moment the curtain opened and it was time to perform, the turntable started spinning in reverse,” Mathis shared before gesturing the different directions the stage was moving in. And in real time, we have to troubleshoot and try to do a complete piece in reverse.” Vulture has reached out to the Recording Academy and CBS, hoping to find official confirmation on how Harry’s house was really supposed to spin.
